  • Hi there folks,

As you might be able to tell from my not-so-subtle lack of profile image, I've only just walked in the door, put down the umbrella, and glanced around to make sure the cat didn't get out.

I'm sure if I stick around, I may be more comfortable about stating personal information, but please forgive me for not doing so just yet. ;)
At a bare minimum, I live in the land of the frozen-hellscape known as Canada, and have worked for the past 10 years in the gaming industry (Painful...but rewarding).

I only recently found out about Whateley via an author I was directed to (And, much to my free-time's disgust), spend nearly an entire weekend reading!

I'll freely admit that I've only followed one author's stories so far (Those word streams of the ethereal Morpheus) and felt the itch to actually try to start writing.... again... after several aborted attempts years prior. I don't claim to be an critic, or even particularly well versed in most literature, but any perceived flaws I might have noticed (Real, or more likely not!) were swiftly defenestrated by how much fun I was having reading stories in this setting.

Assuming that I don't find my life turned upside-down by anything, I was considering hanging my hat here for a little while, if that's alright with all of you. I think this is a really fun setting made by a lot of really creative people, and I'd love to get to know you all some more. (My sincere apologies if I do indeed drop a smoke-bomb and vanish, I have in the hpast done so to my later regret, but I find I can be somewhat squirrelish in the rate and directions I tend to travel).

As an ice breaker, let's have some questions! Feel free to answer, or not ;)

    1) How are you all doing at the time of reading this post?

    2) Would any of you happen to have any favorite stories in the Whateley universe you feel I should read? (Keeping in mind that I am still akin to a rank armature in this universe, so "end of trilogy" or "only apply with prior experience & a PHD" may not quite apply here.

    3) Where applicable, what's your favorite game or movie?

    4) Any rules, spoken or unspoken that I should probably know about?

    5) Is that a spider on your leg?

    6) Do you think this is a good place for someone to try their hand at writing?

    7) What is your favorite concept, theme, or perspective in the Whateley universe?

Thanks everyone, hope to hear from you soon.

Well done ;) You got me to register to a forum (something I've avoided doing again for years) in the hopes I could tell you that I really like your writing.

    Thanks so much :)

  • Welcome Shaiden. Don't worry about personal info... we originate from the TG Fiction community and are used to member privacy. You can share as much or little as you like, no judgement.

    I'll field question 6:
I think you'll find that the Whateley Universe is a great place to try your hand with some writing... for a couple reasons. The Universe is really well defined by the wealth of existing stories, both canon and non, and that gives you freedom to really explore your idea without needing to put a lot of time into world building. World building IS very fun on its own, but it can be overwhelming when you're focused on the smaller issues of character development, interactions, plot structure and writing technique.

Second, its a good community for it... we tend to police people pretty well when it comes to putting a stop to aggressive/insulting feedback while still leaving an opening for people to get feedback that will actually help them improve their work. It's not quite the same as being on a writing workshop site... but you'll have more 'real' readers giving you feedback instead of just other authors trying to tear your down or tell you how 'they' would tell your story.

Third, we are open to off-the-path divergent stories as much as we are the ones that closely follow canon. And the canon authors will mostly support you with details to help you get as close to canon as you want... as long as you don't put us in the position of spoilering things we plan to release ourselves sooner or later. Or try to make us change how something works just because it doesn't match what you want it to be.

There's a couple ways to get started as an author here... you can post stories in the Fabrication Lab section of the forums and just handle posts and feedback via the forums. Or, if you think your stuff is a bit more polished and want to work a bit more publicly visible, you can sign up for the WhatIF author ranks and use the site CMS to produce IF (like those stories you see in the left hand sidebar).

    Also, question 7:
If you come from a gaming background, you might share my enthusiasm with one of my own contributions to the 'verse... that being the GEO plotline. That and the GridGear wearable technology that Shieldwall's ferret VI (Tavi) runs on in the Gen 2 timeline are my two favorite contributions. Favorite overall... that's a lot harder to answer. :)

  • Welcome here.

    1) Meh. I need a shower and then I will feel better.

    2) I don't even have to think about it : The Big Idea , it's a massive tale written by Bek and it is a self contained story so you don't need to have read anything prior to that to really understand what's going on. I find it amazing, without thinking I began to read it after midnight, I was not able to stop until I had finished. I was tired but it was worth it. I still read it from time to time. others would require you to read all the story about a character in particular most likely.

    3) it's a though one, I don't think I really have one. Well, in term of video games the one that have had the biggest emotional impact is Life Is Strange without a doubt but I don't know if I can consider it my "favorite" video game. For movie it's even harder for me to pick one (because on top of that I have a bad memory dealing with names/title).

    4) I think most of the "rules" are common sense : be respectful and everything should be ok. Don't harass the authors (or others) etc.

    5) I hope not, not that I am afraid of spiders (I have lived in a house with a father who had a collection of snakes and tarantula) but I woudn't enjoy it nonetheless.

    6) You could ask Kristin if you can have access to the special place on the forum that shall not be named where authors (both canon and of whatIf) and reviewers discuss what they have in store and possibly help each other. As I understand it, we are currently less then we were one year ago so the community may be less dynamic than it previously was but even now if you write something and need feedback or if you want some help about a particular concept/plot hook etc, people are going to help.

    7) I will have to think more about the universe as a whole to find an appropriate answer.

  • Welcome to the forum! (⌒▽⌒)

    1) Tired, after reading the last update (Eisenmadel 1) in one go, skiping on sleep. Who needs sleep anyway?

    2) I would recommend Parkour Jam Hooligans, and then the Eldritch storyline if you liked that first bit. The Parkour as a sport tying mutants together is quite fascinating, as it is an original way to break from the usual fire-forged friendship.

    3) I am not a gamer. The one game I ever played for any serious amount of time was Super Smash Bros Melee, and to this date I still think Melee is better than the Brawl sequel (haven't played the Wii-U version though). Pokemon games come in close second, my first one (Ruby) holding a special place in my heart due to shinies.

    4) Have fun, but never at someone else's expenses.

    5) *Stands up, walk to the washroom, get some paper tissue, and crush the spider with two fingers* Nothing's wrong with spiders, but my apartment's has zero flies at the moment, so there is no need for spiders inside. Thank you.

    6) It sure is. Don't be affraid to get your hands dirty. There will be people to provide feedback.

    7) Good question. I would say it's the sheer amount of points of view, of sharacter variety and of author variety of such a wide breath of themes and subjects. Story and plots always have those slight similarities and contrast that makes reading the timeline as a whole extremely enjoyable. From Ayla's savviness, Jade's innocent wonder, Sara's sensuality, Merry's snark, Caitlin's rage, Tennyo's insecurities. The outcasts, Chou, Jobe (and much more that I have yet to read). Every arc is so different from one another, and yet familiar and easy to grasp from the common setting. The universe is all so complex and complete, yet with each story being simple in a way, inserting pieces of knowledge one scene at a time, one point of view at a time. So in one word? Variety. That's the perspective of the Whateley universe that keeps me coming for more.

  • Welcome, welcome!

I will back the recommendations for "The Big Idea" and "Parkour Jam Hooligans", I would add "A Single Fold" , though the writing is a bit spotty on that one.

Also, there is a lot of world-building material in "Razzle Dazzle", "Crime and Chaos", "Mimeographic", which could help put things into perspective a bit more.

You might also want to look at the lists I wrote for the Team Kimba introductory stories and the character origin/intro stories . I intend to add a list of one-shot stories, and one of the combat finals stories soon.

IMHO the combat finals, especially "The Pushover" , "Never Look a Gift Squirrel in the Mouth" , "Gearhead", and "Combat Boot" work well as stand-alone stories, as they mostly focus on secondary characters and don't have a lot of immediate references to previous story arcs.

You might want to try writing some micro-scenes (see the thread of that name in the Workshop) before jumping into a whole story, just to get your feet wet.

  • Hello and welcome.

We are pretty gentle here, and many of us will chime in with constructive feedback when we can (I've been kind of busy for that lately, but I'm getting back into it)

Recommendations? Any and all of it, and don't forget the library stories. It's all good, even the non-whateley stuff.

I am a gamer... and I'd have to say that Dead Space, Bioshock, and Silent Hill series are all tied in my heart, though I play a little of everything. I'm currently hooked on civ 6 for example.

A spider on my leg? Dinner.

Once again, welcome to the madhouse.

  • Welcome.

It was Morpheus' fanfiction story that got me interested in Whateley (still waiting for the story to become canon).

    As to your questions.

    1 Today is about average.

2 Other than the ones previously mentioned. I would recommend Welcome to Poe It introduces the original main cast, and the setting. The you can hit some of the origins and catch up.

    3 Favorite movie, Them!

4 Asking questions is good, accepting answers is better. Arguing that the authors are wrong is bad.

5 No it's an ant, and I am on it's leg. (See question 3)

6 Yes, you will get feedback that is both friendly and helpful.

7 There is no magical reset button. In too many superhero universes things don't have consequences. New York gets destroyed one week, and is back to normal the next. If something gets broken in the Whateley Universe it stays broken for some amount of time.

    Don't Drick and Drive.

  • Welcome to this little corner of the universe. Between work and other obligations I don’t get around like I used to, so you won’t see me posting too much, but I still try to get on and lurk in the shadows as often as I can. This is a great site, with a great Admin and group of both canon and non-canon writers.
    As for my answers to your questions;
    1) Just another day in paradise for me. Work has been a bear with no sign of letting up, leaving me too tired to do much writing.

    2) Whisper, written by Sleethr is a great one. I believe someone put up a timeline of the stories on the wiki if you wish to try to begin at the start and work your way through the original stories?

    3) All-time favorite, Mechwarrior 3, I think this was the best of the Mechwarrior series of games. Star wars galaxies was great until they nerfed it with the NGE

    4) I think that one has been covered by a few now but it boils down to “play nice”

    5) What are you doing out of your web?” I would ask my little pet before gendtly picking her up and placing her back in her web so that the red hourglass on her belly is easy to spot.

    6) It’s a great place to start writing as you will get good constructive feedback.

    7) That would have to be the way the fantasy and science fiction has been woven together.

  • Hi! ... Well, I guess I'll continue my tradition of posting in every New Arrivals thread, and this time, I didn't even plan on hitting "Reply"! ... I was trying for "Subscribe"... ... And I'm basically subscribed to the whole site now...

    1. What am I doing... Hmm... Usually browsing when I have other things I could be doing, mainly school. ... I wonder how young our youngest members are... Likely I'm not the youngest... Hmm...

    2. Hoping for Red Card to update... Wanting to actually get into that Compass Rose series and stuff... ... I really should go and figure out what jm2clouds was talking about with a Sidhe fanfic where they like the transform...

    3. Don't have a favorite movie, or none sticks out atm...

Dunno what the other questions are, and too lazy to check, so gonna stop here...

  • Hello Frozen Canada person, I am a frozen Alaska person.

    1) How are you all doing at the time of reading this post?

I am writing the sixth story in my recent spate of whateley stories, Siblings & Savages, which kicks off the outcasts for year 2 because it's -44 farenheit outside.

    2) Would any of you happen to have any favorite stories in the Whateley universe you feel I should read? (Keeping in mind that I am still akin to a rank armature in this universe, so "end of trilogy" or "only apply with prior experience & a PHD" may not quite apply here.

I'm particularly fond of Morpheus' Imp stories, Roulette and Absinthe. One of the critical plot points of the Whateley stories is Insanity Prerequisite, Part 4, the Halloween attack. Bek D. Corbin's stories tend to leave me laughing as well because of weapons-grade snark. There's a lot of stories from all of the authors I like.

    3) Where applicable, what's your favorite game or movie?

Depends on my mood. I actually prefer reading to movies. Vidya games are my "too tired to do anything else" crack.

    4) Any rules, spoken or unspoken that I should probably know about?

    Don't feed Razorback after Midnight.

    5) Is that a spider on your leg?

    What spider? *swallows*

    6) Do you think this is a good place for someone to try their hand at writing?

Yeah, it can definitely be a good place, just depends on your critique tolerance.

    7) What is your favorite concept, theme, or perspective in the Whateley universe?

Skill and Talent versus raw power. I'm fond of stories that show competence is a power all in itself.

  • Howdy folks!

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement :)

I have to admit, I've had a character / story idea buzzing around my head for the past week or so, and now I'm starting to do background research on the Whateley-verse guiding rules and principles while starting to chart out plot points and the like.

I'll admit, being my first writing project since... High school? It's a bit unnerving.

I highly doubt my story would ever be of cannon quality (or much quality at all ^_^;;) But being in the Whateley-verse, and looking for suggestions on how I should go about starting, planning, and other feedback whereabouts would that belong here? Is there somewhere specific I should find / make a thread to discuss this? My apologies for my cluelessness on this. I have a tendency to rely more on live-communication than otherwise, so forum-use is a bit of a rusty skill for me. I'm much more used to direct emails, wikis, and comm programs like Discord or Hipchat.

Looking around the other forums sectors, I'm seeing sections for independent fiction, official discussion, writing tips, etc. However I'm not entirely certain what I should be posting in, where it would end up, and if possible, I'd like to avoid stepping on anyone's toes the week after I arrived.

    Thanks again!

    EDIT:
I should also note that I indeed have read the FAQ regarding posting stories. I'm nowhere NEAR that level of ready, and am right now trying to set up a solid base off which I can start building :) My apologies if I caused any confusion.

  • The simplest way to workshop as a starting author is to use the forums. The biggest argument for this is that you don't have to feel like you need to PROOF things before you post them... where posting to WhatIF indicates a desire for visibility from the wider readership.

Where do you go about doing this?

This depends on how you are starting out: do you have elements/characters/plot points/etc that you want to discuss and hash out with people before you actually do scene writing? Or do you have scenes ready to start posting (even if they're not in order or polished yet)?

If just wanting to discuss and thrash ideas around (the former) is more suited to where you're at and you just want to present an idea and chat about it for a bit before diving in... I'd recommend starting a thread down in "The Workshop" (a subcategory of Independent Fiction: The Tunnels, the main forums section for all non-canon writing projects)

If you're ready to start posting 'story', your first step is to stake out your 'claim' by posting the first part of your story. You'll want to do that in the "Posting Stories: Fabrication Lab" section of the forums. That section is, by general usage/agreement, only for authors. You create a thread there using the title of your story, or the character's name... and you edit/add posts as necessary to flesh out and tell your story. No one else will post in the Fab Lab. That way discussions and speculation, etc don't disrupt the reading/posting of stories and everyone knows that if there's a new post in your thread, that its a new part of the story.

If you want feedback/responses to your story in the Fab Lab, create a similarly named thread in the "Project Discussion" section. If no thread exists, it is assumed that the author isn't looking for feedback... so if you DO want it, make sure you create a thread for your story in BOTH sections, the Fab Lab and the Project Discussion thread.

Once you get your feet wet and want to move from the forums posting to using the site to post WhatIF's...let me know and I'll promote you and get you rolling in the additional forums and site sections that you'll need.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.
