  • Hello all!

I'm new to these forums, so thought I should do an intro post as suggested...

I've been reading Whateley stories ever since Motley and Renae pointed me at them, hmm... eight years ago or so? (Wow, time flies!) As I've done a (small) amount of writing for fun, I recently thought I might throw some ideas and characters into the Whateley (Independent!) Universe and see what happens. Gotten a few chapters done, still a lot more to go - and only shared them with Motley so far. (I might be a little nervous about sharing with a wider audience, shh...) It's been fun, which I'm hoping will be motivation enough to actually finish the story (or at least book 1!).

Thus I've been reading the Wiki, and trying to figure out the best process here for a noob like me. Looks like there's a choice between using the forums to do chapter updates, or the new WhatIF section - although I need to reread that, as how that works with regards to how many people can view/comment (in a different section somehow?) is still a little unclear to me. Probably my fault for reading through the Guide late in the evening when already tired. Also is it better to have an entire 'story' be complete before posting anywhere or does adding chapters as they're written preferred? I'm using Scrivener as my editor, so would be cut-n-pasting and not actively writing using the forum's editor - no idea how well that will work out either, but I really do like the Scrivener environment in how it helps manage a writing project and will just hope that formatting doesn't prove problematic when pasting elsewhere. I haven't applied to be an 'Author' yet, in case needing an entire story done first is preferred - I'd hate to apply and have it be months before I post anything and seem like a total slacker...

Anyways, I look forward to at the very least continue playing in the ol' imagination as time and schedule permits.

    Thanks!
    Erisian

  • Don't worry! I applied to be a WhatIF author, and all I've got were/are abortive attempts. Although, new developments in canon, and rethinking of old thoughts has garnered new ideas... Now all I need is time... What? Just time? HA!

Now, where's that walkthough that seems to have disappeared??

    Oh, and check this: whateleyacademy.net/index.php/forum/the-...-and-fabrication-lab

It's the "home page" in the authors section.

    Welcome aboard.

  • Welcome!

The advantage of the FabLab is that more people will be able to see your story as you write it, and the tone is a bit more casual than the WhatIf section. I recommend starting there if you want to build your story chapter by chapter, and then post as a WhatIf once you're ready to show your work to all the fans who don't check the forum.

Between posting the 'entire' story at once or going with chapter by chapter updates, it's your choice. Most writers prefer to post each chapter individually. The only expectation is that if you publish a WhatIf, that story or part of a story should be pretty much complete and stable (no more editing except maybe for typos and small details).

You can apply to be an author if you want. There's no 'waiting so long that you're a slacker'. And it lets you read and comment on other people's work. :3

  • Greetings, Erisian. I'd say welcome to the community, but it would seem you've been following Whateley quite a bit longer than I've even been aware of it, so I'll settle for "Welcome to the forums."

  • Greets. You say Renae and Motley pointed you our direction? If you're still in touch with those crazy kids, tell them to drop by the new site, set up accounts, and say hello. We promise not to chain them to chairs and make them write, or to feed their muse single malt!

  • Thanks, it'll be nice to hear from them.

And its good to have you as part of the vocal community too, btw. I know we have lots of lurkers who have followed the stories for years but never been a visible part of the community / spoken on the forums, but its always awesome when one of you de-cloaks and joins the conversation. Especially when you do so and also express an interest in writing. Let me know if/when you need a bump up to WhatIF author status... or if you just have questions about how to get rolling. It's 'fairly' well explained in a couple places but I'll be the first to admit that there are parts of the process that are counter-intuitive. I fix such things when I can, but sometimes they're just the price of trying to keep everything else simple. We're doing some stuff with Joomla that it wasn't really designed for, and trying to avoid using much (if any) unique coding... to keep maintenance and migration simple, if such becomes necessary.

  • Thanks! I'm still pretty much browsing around idly, and realizing that while I've read a lot of the stories over the years, wow, I sure don't have the memory for details that others clearly do! I may need to go reread some of them, heh. (Especially the ones by Morpheus... whenever I've seen a new story by them on BigCloset or wherever, I know what I'm reading that evening! Great stuff!)

So far I've got about five chapters in initial draft form, but I know I want to edit a few more details into them before posting anywhere. The going is sadly slower than I'd like; as much as I'm quite thankful to have employment, it does mean weekends are it for working on anything properly. Just too brain dead at the end of each work day. >.<

  • ^ Well, maybe post the first chapter, so if there's anything big that we find and you think needs fixing, it doesn't have to propagate too far down the already written text?

But, if you feel safe with what you got, *shrugs*
