  • Hi! I'm DerpHaven! If you're feeling formal, call me DerpHaven, but otherwise Derp is fine.

I... don't want to be doing this. I don't like announcing my presence, especially in such a small community, because it makes people look at me, and then they judge me, and then I get worried that I'll be rejected for some stupid reason... *deep inhale*

Okay. So. I have been reading the Whateley stories for just over a year by now, since I discovered them sometime in summer 2016. I still haven't made it through the entire Original Canon (stop making my job harder you guys!) and have read most of the 2nd Gen. I'm also kinda interested in writing a couple stories of my own, but I'm also nervous about what people will think.

I probably won't post too much at first, I'll just feel like I'm barging in on something that I'm not supposed to.

    So, um, hi?

  • Hello and welcome! Don't be shy. We don't bite. Ok, that's not true.. some of the authors do, but we've gotten them some rawhide bones to gnaw on and they have been much better about it.

Feel free to post stories. Nothing you write could possibly be worse than anything I write. I mean I have a character that goes through daily chest-bursts, and another that has the "spirit of the Loon"...

  • Hello Derp,

I will avoid looking too closely at you.

Please write some stories, as long as you use paragraphs and reasonable punctuation we won't be too harsh.

Enjoy the stories, enjoy the friendship.

Be sure to follow the Golden Rule. (Phase has all the gold, so he makes all the rules.)

  • Welcome aboard!

Trust us that whatever you feel like contributing, we'll be glad to have you. As for writing, maybe start with the Bad Ideas thread while you feel things out, then work your way into the micro-scenes, and just have fun with it. I was nervous at first about putting down some material too.

The more you try the more fun it is!

  • Hello and welcome! And don't worry too much just write and post what you feel!

Most of the writing for the fan fiction happens in the Fabrication Lab and Project Discussion and if you want to try shorter stories/scenes there is a Micro Scene Thread and then the Micro Discussion Thread

    ...

    So, um, hi?

Welcome! Be comforted by the fact that even if we are absolutely outraged or appalled at your posts, we can only look at your avatar. We can stare at it really really hard, but it will still just be your avatar and not you. And we don't do rejection either. You have to be a complete asshole and obnoxiously harassing other community members and risking chasing away authors before we go to the extent of banning you. It's only happened a couple times in the entire history of the community. So... pretty damn unlikely. :) (note to the peanut gallery - that is NOT a call to challenge :-P ).

As far as doing some writing ... great! Always happy to have new talent join the community. Just be sure to be clear in the type of feedback (if any) that you want. Some of us like being raked over the coals about what we're doing, some people want big picture feedback, others just want proofing help (typos/spelling/etc), and you will get some of each if you aren't clear. Also, be open when you talk with the other authors and readers about what you hope to achieve with your stories. Are you workshopping? Honing skills? Trying new styles or genre? Trying to create something that will 'wow' the community? working towards print publication? Such things will change how we read and respond to your efforts... and you can have all the control over that... you simply have to be clear about it from the start.

And again, welcome. Always great to have someone de-lurk. :)

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

Who's looking at the peanut gallery? If a challenge is issue around here, the first fight is amongst the authors to see which one of them is gonna pick up the gauntlet!

So like, words with a large number of them, like muumuu, or just spell words like colour and armour the correct way?

  • Color has no "u"
    Neither does armor.
Center is terminated with "er", not some silly "re"
    Same for theater.
We ride an elevator, not a lift.
    We drive trucks, not lorries.
And the steering wheel belongs on the left side of the car. You got it right in airplanes - command pilot is left-seat. Why can't you do the same for motor vehicles?

There are more of us than Brit (and Brit-derived native-English speakers). We win by popular vote.

Actually no, the current 'trend' in the US is for theatre ... as opposed to the german version with -er. There is also some indication of it distributing differently by usage with theatre being the 'art' and a 'theater' being a space in which such things take place. Thus, a movie theater. But going to see musical theatre or a play.

As to the steering wheels... that's dependent on where on the road you drive. Having the driver on the side of the lane closest to the center line (and oncoming traffic) helps ensure you are paying attention to the centerline (and not viewing it through parallax error).

  • I thought the position of the steering wheel didn't matter in Texas, as they drive down the middle of the road.

    Says the Brit-derived native-English speaker.

Though I feel I should also mention -ise words such as Traumatise and Monetise.

    tl;dr: F*ck Noah Webster.

India sides with the rest of the Commonwealth, and has the most native English speakers in the world (Sorry America, you're not even half the number India has), so by that standard you need to throw out your Webster abominations on the Queen's English and come back to join the correct and true way of spelling.

But we're patient, and we understand things are a little hard for you poor Americans, and there's so much more you need to fix first, so we'll wait for you to adopt universal SI measurements, then become a true first world country (it's the little things, universal health care, universal education, taxation only on money earned in your own jurisdiction, a truely democratic system of government where everyone gets to vote and the will of the majority of voters is respected), the we'll let you attack the more advanced concepts, like English as the English spell it.

It's kinda hard to be political when one person just gets completely shut down.

Also thanks, and thanks to everyone else who's welcomed me!

  • This isn't political, it's the normal friction of the Whateley Authors as a few of us spell correctly, and the rest are corrupted by the evil mind control of Webster and his cult :p

  • No fair quoting Bernard Shaw, even if the purported quote is apocryphal and can't be found anywhere in his writings.

But I give you another witty Brit, Oscar Wilde: "We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language."

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.
