This was the same problem I had.

If I were to write a PK character, I'd make her super, super weak.
If I were to write a gadgeteer, I'm make her obsessed with improving tested older designs, but be angry any time someone called her steampunk.
If I were to write a Wiz...well, I guess I still owe the followups to Stacy's stories. :P

    J. Michael Straczynski wrote a character like that for "Rising Stars". It doesn't take much PK strength to hold a blood vessel closed for a few minutes...

  • I don't have much facility with the written word, and to get that facility, would take time from the other forms of art that i am currently learning/practising.

That said, when i express a Whateley character through the medium of the performance art that is my life, it is a low-level Gadgeteer/Wiz-1. Gadgeteer specialising in low-tech, and bricolage...

If you would write, I'd let you borrow my characters and set up friendly rivalries.

  • If I were to write a character with a recurring enemy, every time they meet the character would lose something of themselves, a dream, a goal, a hope. Even when they temporarily defeated their enemy this would happen, until they gain the strength to take it all back.

If I were to write a revenge story, it wouldn't be a glorified, justified, Hollywood roaring rampage of revenge. It would be brutal, violent, and dirty, showing just how dehumanizing even justified revenge can be.

If I were to write a character, they will be human, flaws, fears, screw ups, and most of all hope.

  • If I were to write...well... I am pretty sure my baser nature would take over and it would be inappropriate to share with others. I have to work hard to maintain a semi-professional veneer already. Letting me loose with free reign in a fiction story would be not good...

That being said, I tried writing something of a fanfic for a bit, and I just couldn't get it to work out like I wanted, the words flowed as I typed, then I read it and deleted it. It just wasn't "right". Gritty, crude and way too dark for sharing with others.

More to the point: If Bek were to remove X and just leave Y then everyone would Z no chromosome.

People have something against the runic and ogham alphabets or something? I demand equal time for minority alphabets! ;)

  • What do the Korean's call theirs? They have an alphabet. I know that they like the Japanese use some ideograms too, but they do use an alphabet. I didn't know that Chinese had anything except the ideograms.. Hey at least one person complained about no runic! At least we shouldn't have to worry about anyone actively complaining about not using the Mayan script or cuneiform or hieroglyphics. Although you have a certain population who practice a form of them today.

  • The Korean writing system is called the " Hangul aphabet "
It's a really interesting system because:
    - it was designed from the ground up instead of slowly evolved from other systems (although that's not really unique, there were several writing systems designed from the ground up for languages with no previous written form)
    - what looks like a single kanji-like symbol is actually a combination of several "letters" that make up a syllable
    - the letterforms were designed from phonetic principles (as in, the vowel letter resembles the shape of the mouth when speaking that sound)

Would this be a bad time to mention that I study cuneiform and hieroglyphics some as well? I have yet to find anything about how to translate Mayan however, it is something I want to add to my collection. I even have an old Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary of the English Language that includes the alphabets Arabic, German, Greek, Hebrew and Russian. You just don't find quality reference works like that these days. Also, the mention of Ogham and Runic was a joke, not a complaint. I REALLY do NOT want to have to do any major translation work before reading a story.

  • Fair enough. Though I will admit, if someone were to break out their chisels and carve a story in ogham on a rock and post a photo of it, I would most likely put in the time to decipher it...I really need some more hobbies. :p

  • I appreciate the link. But there is a minor problem with it. Mayan glyphs stand for words and syllables, not individual letters as I recall. Logo-graphic writing systems are a pain when it comes to translation. That being said, it might work for short bits of text in a pinch if you enter the text in phonetic or syllabic segments.

  • Many toys can be useful depending on how you use them. Like the various enigma simulators. They are actually very useful for research purposes when checking "decrypted" messages against the original cipher-text. The number of errors in decryption and translation is amazing, it sometimes makes me wonder how the Royal Navy made as much use of decrypts as they did.

They most assuredly did pull some amazing feats. How they got as much right as they did makes you suspect sorcery at times.

  • Actually, the Bletchfield cryptographers made a number of rather staggering bloopers. Most glaring was the decrypt for the infamous Coventry bombing. The RAF knew that Coventry was going to get bombed,, but they didn't know that it was going to be an Annihilation raid. Bletchfield over-relied on the Luftwaffe using a specific term for the complete wipe-out raids, like they did to Rotterdam. The British did protect Coventry with a very nasty ring of anti-aircraft cannon, and the RAF's retaliation on the retreating bomber was downright vicious. Not that it mattered. Coventry was still in ruins. And while Churchill gets a pretty good deal from History that he didn't strict deserve, he did NOT 'sacrifice' Coventry to safeguard the Enigma secret.
