  • Post links to songs you think others would appreciate. I am guessing YouTube is the best for this, even if there is no video to go with it, though I think you can use Spotify links as well (I don't know, and I am pretty sure those would usually have micropayments).

So: something with personal meaning to me.

As a pair of bonuses, this Quicksilver tribute AMV (there's also a Flash AMV which I could have posted which does use the whole song, but the original video is worth using), and the GIFs with Sound that puts part of the "Race the Tube" video to this song interspersed with several other clips.

As is always the case with GWS, there's a NSFW warning for this.

  • I wasn't going to add another so soon, but the discussion in the "Ayla - what's next?" thread about a possible Whateley Magic Fair, and the suggestion that it be called 'Scarborough Faire' (and my specific reference to the 'Canticle for the Lost Soldier' that is sung by Art Garfunkel, counterpoint, in the background of this version of the eponymous English ballad ), got me thinking I should post this now for anyone too young to know it. It is a particularly ethereal and sorrowful rendition which I personally have always loved, though I will admit that failing to credit either the traditional sources or the person who wrote the specific version used was a dick move on their part.

  • I really couldn't pass up on posting this after posting this , now, could I?

    Julia Ecklar - "Eternal Flame"

This is a Bob Kanefsky parody of "God Lives on Terra", sung by Ecklar for Roundworm.

    Eternal Flame
I was taught Assembler in my second year of school
It's kinda like construction work --
With a toothpick for a tool
So when I made my senior year
    I threw my code away
And learned the way to program
    That I still prefer today

Now, some folks on the Internet
    Put their faith in C++
They swear that it's so powerful
It's what God used for us
And maybe He lets mortals dredge
    Their objects from the C
    But I think that explains
Why only God can make a tree

For God wrote in Lisp code
When he filled the leaves with green
The fractal flowers and recursive roots:
The most lovely hack I've seen
    And when I ponder snowflakes
    Never finding two the same
I know God likes a language
    With its own four-letter name

Now, I've used a SUN under Unix
So I've seen what C can hold
I've surfed for Perls, found what Fortran's for
Got that Java stuff down cold
Though the chance that I'd write COBOL code
Is a SNOBOL's chance in Hell
    And I basically hate hieroglyphs
    So I won't use APL

Now, God must know all these languages
    And a few I haven't named
But the Lord made sure, when each sparrow falls
That its flesh will be reclaimed
And the Lord could not count grains of sand
    With a 32-bit word
Who knows where we would go to
If Lisp weren't what he preferred?

And God wrote in Lisp code
    Every creature great and small
Don't search the disk drive for man.c
When the listing's on the wall
And when I watch the lightning burn
    Unbelievers to a crisp
I know God had six days to work
So he wrote it all in Lisp

    Yes, God had a deadline
So he wrote it all in Lisp

  • Note that this Annwn was from the West Coast of the US and active from 1993 up to the accidental death of lead singer Leigh Ann Hussey in 2006, has no connection to the more recent German band of the same name.

I wonder what Kayda (or Elyzia, for that matter) would think of this...

Annwn (US) - "Black Eye, Yellow Eye"

    Black Eye, Yellow Eye
    By Leigh Ann Hussey, 1993

Have you seen the ghosts of trees
    where the riverbank was there?
Do they shiver in the breeze,
    rooted high in empty air?
Have you heard the ghosts of stone
speaking in the dust you raise,
    whispering to you alone
    as you thread the maze?

    Black eye and yellow eye watching the dissolving sky;
Black eye and yellow eye: move and live, be still and die.
How will you capture the anarchy and rapture
glaring through black eye and yellow eye?

Black eye rises on black wing,
shrugs his shoulders, folds his coat.
Yellow eye looks up to sing
    broken songs with rasping throat.
    Blowing glowing rings of smoke
    girdling the granite stars
    as the fire he awoke
    glows behind the cards.

    Black eye (&c)

Will you cross the bridge of silver?
Will you cross the bridge of steel?
Will you cross the bridge of bone
    that cleaves the crimson flood?
Will you smash the frozen veil?
Will you dare the shaman's trail?
Will you ken the tale through omens
    written in your blood?

    This night on the road he dies;
there will be no corpse by dawn.
    Death's an order he denies;
still, sometimes he tries it on.
    As you calculate your chance,
he will give no hand to guide --
he will only bid you "dance,
    or be swept aside."

    Black eye (&c)

Regarding the inspiration of the song, the site I got the lyrics from says,

Leigh Ann wrote this song about a trip she took through the American Southwest. She went down the Grand Canyon on muleback, and into Indian reservations in New Mexico. This song was the result.

Now, the 'Yellow Eye' in the song could be Wolf rather than Coyote, as at least one review of the album suggested, and the one in the cover art seems more lupine rather than latranine (I hope I have that right) to me. However, the juxtaposition with Raven seems to make Coyote a better fit. Also, if memory serves, the original CD liner notes did say that she'd specifically seen coyotes on the trip, including a dead one on the side of a road which had vanished by the next day, hence those lines in the final stanza.

Again, this is from memory, but I am pretty sure that on the old Elf Hill Recording Studio website, she'd said that while it was almost certainly :-) something mundane like scavengers or road cleanup crews, the there-then-gone aspect made her think of the trickster legends - that Coyote had let himself die (or seem to) to teach someone a lesson, then simply woke back up and walked away when the time came to move along.

  • Welp, it's about time I put this one to rest. I'm a little surprised no one made the connection before, but not overly so. I will give one of you folks time to post the answer in the L&F thread, rather than giving it myself, though.

So without further ado, I give you the most infamous - and overplayed - filk song of all time: "Banned From Argo" .

Leslie Fish - "Banned From Argo"

The recording quality of this version is somewhat better:

And just to drive this one completely into the ground (hardly a new thing with this song, admittedly), here are the lyrics.
    Banned From Argo
    by Leslie Fish
When we pulled into Argo Port in need of R & R
The crew set out investigating every joint and bar
We had high expectations of their hospitality
But found too late it wasn't geared for spacers such as we

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our captain's tastes were simple but his methods were complex
We found him with five partners each of a different world and sex
The shore police were on the way -- we had no second chance
We beamed him up in the nick of time in the remnants of his pants

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our engineer would yield to none in putting down the brew
He outdrank seven space marines and a demolition crew
The navigator didn't win but he outdrank almost all
And now they've got a shuttlecraft on the roof of city hall

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our proper cool first officer was drugged with something green
And hauled into an alley where he suffered things obscene
He sobered up in sickbay and he's none the worse for wear
Except he somehow taught the bridge computer how to swear

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

The head nurse disappeared a while in the major dope bazaar
Buying an odd green potion guaranteed to cause pon farr
She came home with no uniform and an oddly cheerful heart
And a painful way of walking with her feet a yard apart

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our lady of communications won a ship-wide bet
By getting into the planet's main communications net
Now every time someone calls up on an Argo telescreen
The flesh is there, but the clothes they wear are nowhere to be seen

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our Doctor loves Humanity; his private life is quiet
The Shore Police arrested him for inciting whores to riot
We found him in the city jail, locked on and beamed him free-
Intact except for hickeys and six kinds of VD

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our Helmsman loves exotic plants; the plants all love him too
He took some down on leave with him and we wondered what they'd do
'Til the planetary governor called and swore upon his life
That a gang of plants entwined his house and then seduced his wife!

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

A gang of pirates landed, and nobody seemed to care
They stamped into the nearest bar to announce that they were there
Half our crew was busy there, and invited them to play
But the pirates only looked at us, and turned and ran away

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

Our crew is Starfleet's finest, and our record is our pride
And when we play we tend to leave a trail a mile wide
    We're sorry about the wreckage and the riots and the fuss;
At least we're sure that planet won't be quick forgetting us!

And we're banned from Argo, every one
Banned from Argo just for having a little fun
We spent a jolly shore leave there for just three days or four
But Argo doesn't want us anymore

    ...Wonder why?

  • So the other day I found several cute little brown bugs camping out inside my USB ports. I'd killed a few others like them elsewhere over the last couple weeks, so by this point I was getting suspicious of a larger problem -- and as adorable as it was, colonizing my USB hub is crossing a line I simply will not tolerate. I wasn't sure what they were, though, and skimming through a hundred or so bugs on an insect identification site didn't help. So today I spent a couple hours looking through way too goddamned many pictures of bugs trying to figure out just what the hell they are. My heebies are now thoroughly jeebied after that visual overload, but I finally found the little buggers. They're nymphs of the German Cockroach.

    Tonight, I rest and recover.

    Tomorrow, the war begins.

  • Wait a minute, I haven't posted anything from the Faerie Tale Minstrel yet? In a Whateley thread, of all places? Yes, I know I've posted some of these in other threads, but still... I need to rectify this oversight at once.

Alexander James Adams - "He of the Sidhe"

"March of Cambreadth", old and new:

    "Animals all the Same"

And just for Halloween (and a certain well-known author I'd once known who is famously obsessed with this ballad):
    Tricky Pixie - "Tam Lin"

  • Because a certain famous Cuban song from 1933 was brought up in the J,J&E thread:

    Michael Lucarelli - "Malagueña"

According to Wikipedia, the name is from the generic term for the traditional Flamenco musical accompaniment, and as I understand it. means roughly, "The Woman from Malagua"; the song itself is technically a specific part of the composer's "Suite Andalucía" but he later usually performed it separately, with added lyrics.

As opposed to a similarly named and equally famous, but completely unrelated, Mexican song from about fifteen years later, "Malagueña Salerosa" , and which it is sometimes confused (they are nothing alike except in the name, and the number of times they've been covered by later artists).

Miguel Aceves Mejía - "Malagueña Salerosa"

As for Rumba as a style, it is also from Cuba, and the dance form (which according to Wicked-Pedo was later incorporated into the wider Flamenco framework by Spanish performers) is something like this:

(the music used in this demonstration is a much lower tempo than would usual for the style, obviously)

Example of the music would be:

  • This song carried me through some rough times as a child. There's also a faster, more energetic version that I enjoy, but it has abridged lyrics.

I didn't get to hear the JP/EU soundtrack until I was a teen, so these two were fun but didn't get the opportunity to fuse irrevocably into the very fiber of my being the way Sonic Boom did.

  • This song has long been a favorite of mine; I recall this playing on a tinny AM radio in our kitchen growing up, while my mother made bread (At least I think so; AM radio wasn't really known for folk music - or anything even remotely controversial - in the early 1970s, but I'd swear that was how I first heard it). Oddly enough, though, my Dad didn't drink much, so I didn't make the connection to beer and whiskey until much later.

    Traffic - "John Barleycorn"

But then, it is a traditional piece, and this is probably closer to the older versions:

AM radio was still carrying Top 40 formats into the mid-70s, so songs like "Lola" got played. The rigid programming formats took over more in the 1980s

John Barleycorn was released in 1970, bracketed by Jethro Tull's albums Stand Up and Aqualung, so this is a time period when folk rock (or at least Americana) was still viable and prog rock was gathering steam. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys came out in 1971. Even the Grateful Dead got some airplay with "Friend of the Devil" and "Truckin"

  • Not sure why I am putting two very different songs back-to-back, but...
    Mason Williams - "Classical Gas"

The acoustic version of this, from the soundtrack for the film The Story of Us, is often mistakenly attributed to Eric Clapton, who had been the one who arranged the soundtrack and performed some of the other songs on it. Neither Clapton nor Williams is very happy about people making this mistake.

Not Eric Clapton - "Classical Gas"

  • This thread keeps reminding me of one at the old forums... the karaoke thread. Main difference being that instead of just posting songs people happen to like, the karaoke thread consisted in finding a "thematically appropriate" song for a Whateley character to sing (or, conversely, finding an appropriate character to sing a song). I remember I had Mezzo singing Raul Seixas' "Metamorfose Ambulante" (translation: "Walking Metamorphosis")
The below video was an ad for Brazilian telecom Vivo and Samsung:

(The last few seconds are a snippet of another Raul Seixas song, named "Eu Nasci Há Dez Mil Anos Atrás", meaning "I Was Born Ten Thousand Years Ago")

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Not NSFW, which may make it unique in this band's repertoire, but I'd still be careful about playing this out loud in some places.

  • Not a song link per se, but:
The free, ad-free Soma FM Internet radio has three seasonal streaming channels with Christmas music. "Christmas Lounge" is pretty much what you might expect (albeit perhaps a bit better quality than your average shopping mall Christmas soundtrack), but "Christmas Rocks" and "Xmas in Frisko" have more... unusual mixes.

And of course there are about three dozen other streaming channels in a variety of styles.

  • Because there is always room for another interpretation of this ballad, as I am certain Seanan would agree (though to the best of my knowledge, she's never publicly performed it herself... hmmn).

Anaïs Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer - "Tam Lin (Child 39)"

Drake Oranwood - "Tam Lin of the Elves"

    Speaking of whom:
Seanan McGuire w/ Vixy and Tony - "Wicked Girls"
