  • I don't know if Crazy Minh meant to go straight to public release with the story, but Abridged Worlds, Part 1 is live.

  • @CM, I don't know if you saw Phoenix Spiritus' guide, but one of the few things generally "required" is the WhatIF logo on the non-official stories. The catch is getting it inserted as HTML code. Hoping this example helps:

    <p><img src="images/include/WhatIF-Logo.jpg" alt="WhatIF Logo" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></p>
    <h1 style="text-align: center;">[Optional (Character Name) (Story Number):] (Story Name)</h1>
    <h5 style="text-align: center;">by (pen the name on the author)</h5>
    <p>Story blurb</p>
    <hr id="system-readmore" />
    <p>Story begins!</p>

    With my first story out, just having the first paragraph before the 'readmore' code seemed to fit. The description text idea seems to work well with multi-part stories.

    At least the code for the logo and author name should go in, if only to break up the WhatIF story listings to let readers know where they are going.

    So far, "Abridged Worlds" looks like it will be a fun all-ages story referencing the United Federation of Planets, Doctor Who and other fun things.

  • Actually, the code is supposed to be:
    <img src="http://whateleyacademy.net/images/include/WhatIF-Logo.jpg" alt="WhatIF Logo" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" onmouseover="this.src='http://whateleyacademy.net/images/include/WhatIF-Disclaimer.jpg';" onmouseout="this.src='http://whateleyacademy.net/images/include/WhatIF-Logo.jpg';" />

    Why?

    Well... the logo is great, but its not actually the important part. One of the requirements of writing non-canon Whateley stories is to properly indicate a story as non-canon and to reference the home location of the Whateley Universe. This has been a part of the rights / usage agreement since 2004 when the Universe debuted. We don't make much of a fuss about it with stories posted here because the distinction is fairly clear and all that legal stuff is also posted here. But it IS an issue offsite. And it doesn't hurt to set it up right in stories here... unlike including the legalese in text, at least this way doesn't distract from the story unless you mouseover the image.

  • Hm. Now I need to check to see if one if the editors I've used "simplified" the code on me for my posted stories. I've had some rotten luck here and there with en-dash, em-dash, and extended Latin spellings.

  • OK, then. Let me re-post the comments I made in the story page itself:

    Very good! Not a bad start. While Jayden wouldn't fit with the Kimbas (though I bet they'd love the chance to talk to him), he might want to talk to both Gateway and Josie Gilman. I also imagine he'd find himself having a lot in common with my micro-fanfic character Jump and the friends she's made in her stay at Whateley.

    I can't recall off-hand what the rules are about making discussion threads for WhatIFs in the main discussion area. Do you intend to have one for this?

  • Am I the only one who saw him use a Type 3 phaser and wondered why would he use a type 3, phaser rifle, when a type 2, pistol, would do?

  • I see part 2 but don't see part one. Is the part listed as part 2 actually part 1 or is part one hidden else where and I'm just too confused to find it?

  • Here . It does show up in the "Newest Independent Fiction" section in the lower part of the pages, and for now is still on the main "Stories" page below the entry for Vegas Part 2.

  • Wow. I didn't know people had started a discussion about my story. Thanks. Anyway, yes @NJM1564, the Type 3 is often listed as a rifle, but many episodes state there being a 'type 3 phaser pistol'. I am one of the fans who beleive this refers to the 'bannana' hand phaser from TNG (type 1 being the TOS pistol, Type 2 being the little tablet one and Type 3 being the longer 'bannana' one. Really hope Jayden didn't aim it funny and have the beam skewer out of the top!!!

  • By "banana" you mean the one that's usually called the "Dustbuster" model phaser?

    Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • If you mean the one with the angular 'nozzle', the curved handle and the flat 'head', then yes. BTW, I'm going to have to hold off on writing the follow-up to Abridged worlds, which is currently under the working title The Art of the MMO Sword, and features Jayden getting into GEO as a hobby. Just a quick question, do I have to have permission to use GEO??? I mean, it's more part of the universe than anything...

    This makes me wonder if he isn't going to wonder into the GEO universe somehow. :D

  • Seems he's not going to the GEO universe, but the way it's worded suggests that he hadn't been there previously. I was hoping that he'd met Whisper (avatar) at some point and would now meet Whisper (player).

    Ryoko either restrains herself as much as Tennyo or is much weaker than Tennyo if Jayden actually managed to get out alive.

    Insanity: for when normal just isn't interesting enough.

    Ryoko and Tenchi - that reminds me of a scene from "Yellowbeard", with the pirates genderswapped.

    Yellowbeard: I'm sure I killed the last one I raped, it can't have been you.
    Betty: Well, the afterplay was a bit on the rough side, but not fatal dear.

    True love. It's not quite the same without extensive property damage.
