  • Are the Whateley Verse Ghosts just Echo's of the person who has passed on, or is there some scrap of their soul still clinging to the mortal plane?

What do I mean by this?

Spirits in the WA Universe sense most often refers to beings of extradimensional origin who are most commonly intangible when in the physical planes. Most often, their originate (or at least commonly reside in) the 'near' planes - the astral, the spirit worlds, the ethereal, or the shadow planes that interconnect all of these and the physical realms. Most spirits are intelligent and sentient... but are non-human intelligences. Spirits of the animals and nature make up the majority of them. Of course, where there are common versions of such things, there are also exceptions, archetypes, or 'leaders' who are both more intelligent and powerful. For instance, there are many rabbit spirits hopping around in the lower spirit realms... but Rabbit, the totemic archetype of their kind is a singular spirit and most likely will be found in the upper spirit realms somewhere.

Some entities have such power and force of will that they can pass through death into the beyond as spirits. These retain some aspect of their mortal intelligence and power and have as much in common with the natural spirits as they do with ghosts. Their 'home' is mostly the ethereal realm, one of the few places where force of will and raw intellect and energy is sufficient to generate and maintain identity in a static construct without a physical body. However, the longer such a being is from a physical nature, the more of its mortal awareness is lost (emotions, for instance, are almost exclusively tied to the body and the chemical shifts of it). In many cultures, THESE are the spirits most distrusted by the wise.

Ghosts - the non-physical remains of the formerly living are relatively uncommon. Mostly, the energy of life disperses quickly, returning to the natural cycles... either being reborn or entering a cycle of reward or punishment. Some might get displaced or lost along the way... often due to extreme confusion or tragedy about their death. Sometimes they can even get tossed back into a body if one is available Ghosts decay quickly... they aren't really structured to hold either the power or the intelligence of the mortal who they represented. If the ghost dissipates without stabilizing... they can be gone for good instead of returning to the eternal cycle.

The final type of 'ghost' which is the most common is the emotional bio-magnetic impression of an event that the living make and imprint on their surroundings.
