  • Some avatars manifest the characteristics of their spirit, while others the spirit manifests itself as a separate entity outside of themselves. Aquerna manifests her avatar's abilities physically in a permanent manner. Loophole and Kodiak manifest temporary PK shells over themselves in the forms of their spirits, but those spirits can also appear as separate individuals. Kayda took on the appearance of the Ptesanwi, and Tatanka manifests outside her as a separate entity. What determines how an avatar manifests. Why do some manifest as independent entities, others take on the physical traits of the inner spirit. What determines how an avatar appears?

  • "Normal and regular" avatar descriptions would be more like Aquerna. Kodiak, Grizzly and Tatanka are VERY much exceptions.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • This is one of those things that we often have to remind people - its not an RPG its a story. There doesn't have to be a 'difference' that other people can reproduce to do the same thing.

Remember, even the 'rules' we do have about how mutants manifest and are classed by rank... are only things based on 'what the scientists and theorists have actively measured/scene' ... its entirely possible that a series of mutants will manifest in ways that completely overturns everything that is currently known/believed about mutant powers. They can safely say what PK superman abilities are because they are more or less identical in every mutant with the power... with some variation for technique - like flight, frictional variance, energy reflection, ability to extend it beyond the body, and so on.

Or at least... that's what they thought. And then Shieldwall comes in and throws a PK shell to someone who isn't a mutant at all.

All the background stuff is more about guidelines and keeping you in the right frame of mind... especially when we try to remind/keep people in the "scale way weaker than Marvel and DC" part. That's tough because to some extent, the TK characters that we started off with were at the literal high end of the universe's specs... so lots of fans want to write characters on that level or with combinations of abilities at that level... or higher. When, instead, they should be taking TK as the example of, this is the absolute cap. If your characters can bring down someone in TK... you're too powerful for the universe you're trying to write in. :)

But... for the purpose of specific interesting point of view characters... obviously we don't want to contradict our world's functional mechanics... but having unique abilities that weren't covered in the backstory releases aren't contradictions... though the fact that we don't reveal the reason why most characters don't have spirits like these, doesn't mean there isn't a reason.

It should be obvious by now that Kodiak and Grizzly aren't just bear totems/archetypes, like Tatanka. They're especially not just general purpose squirrel spirit types, like Aquerna hosts. Neither are they like the spirits/gods that Kayda or Hikaru channel... though, in some ways they may be similar to the spirit-fragments that gods have placed in paladins like Miyet. Mostly though, you need to figure out who they are... as that will probably lead you to the final answer. :P

  • Well, they're Five Fold... What Court was their species, anyway? ... Kodiak + Grizzly don't mod their hosts to match them, like Terra-3, or the Sidhe types do...

So, spirit types: Five Fold, God, Animal Totem...

  • Risks the ire of a certain writer by saying that Kayda being able to manifest bison horns would be useful, and occasionally funny.

They're both shaman-type healers no? Both human. Both ancient ghosts for lack of a better term. Kind of same way that Amaterasu is hinted as having been human, once.
