  • In Types of Magic it says part of Enchantment is attuning an item to the higher planes. Seraphim channels Malkuthic energy from a higher plane. And Esoteric was told by the old Native woman that someone, most likely the Bastard, would use him to storm the gates of the higher planes if he got the chance.

I was wondering if there is any specific cosmology of the higher planes in the Whateley Academy Universe, names for them, and such. If none of that information would be spoilers for future stories. Also Fey fought the Bastard on the Dreamscape, is the Dreamscape mentioned one of the higher planes or could be tapped for energy like one of the higher planes?

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

    Yes. In here:

    whateleyacademy.net/index.php/forum/revi...out-magic-sorta#3903

I should think of how to add all that data into the Wiki, even though Sir Lee says just dumping it in is fine...

  • Thanks, Malady. I read that thread and actually commented in it, yet completely blanked on it. I hate my memory sometimes. :side:

Although I'm still curious if the Dreamscape could be tapped for energy like a higher plane.

  • Tapping alternate planes for power usually turns out to be foolish because of the cost of energy involved in creating the initial tap. Well... that... and the idea that those things are separate for a reason. Letting them leak into each other... can be very very bad. For example... you have a large balloon filled with water. You are aware that you could tap that water pressure to drive a small mill/turbine. If you tap it just right, there will be a small high pressure hole that you can direct through your equipment and all is good. But you can't do that just by poking a pin in it to create the hole. If you do, the water pressure rips the hole immediately to allow the pressure to equalize as rapidly as possible... resulting in a destroyed balloon and all the water all over the place (including very little having driven your turbine).

Now imagine tapping into a 'high pressure' plane/dimension.

  • Not to mention that trying to tap one of the powerful planes for a serious amount of energy is rather like trying to charge your iPhone by plugging it directing into the grid.
The usual results is a pair of smoking boots...

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

Would it be possible for a mutant to have the power to tap into the Dreamscape or similar plane for power like Seraphim does by tapping into a higher plane with her Omnipath power? Or is Seraphim's power a rare exception to the rules kind of thing?

  • From the stories I think Seraphim takes about a rock concerts amount of emotions focused on her to make the connection, she's not connected all the time.

  • Seraphim has an active connection to higher planes, but it's 'buffered' or dampened in a way, by the 'veils' that separate the worlds. So she can tap into those energies at higher rates, but it's not 'free'- what she does is send a small amount of power gained through emotional energy up to the Malkuthic plane, where it's sort of 'turbo-charged' and returns to her. So, her 'tap' is not direct. Even so, she has to be careful about how much she channels.
