  • Well, the Nebraskan Zombie outbreak?

No? Too late? [At end: Or maybe it is...]

What? Is this a college-age kid? That's new!

Is the bookstore and its employees an El Goonish Shive reference?

Yeah! Shipping with Laurie! And possibly Lucy or whatever Bookstore Girl's name was.

Seventh Son is the host requirement?

The gaggle of girls was sort of suspicious... Was thinking Maenads or something...

Wait... we know nothing about the spirit... Dionysus??

He's good at remembering names, didn't he say he was bad at that? ... Power detected...

Fangs! Vamp? ... or some vamp-zombie combo, thralls made by bites??

Interesting family dynamic, and yay! Laurie's opinion of him isn't soured!

    *Gets whiplash.*

    Yeah, something like that.

The bookstore is not an El Goonish shive reference, I don't read it, except the few times it's been linked here. It's just that a bookstore offers a pretty good job for a college kid.

The seventh son lineage will come up again.

And yes, zombies will be a-shambling.

Yeah, even though I'm on a mobile, I could have used my edit to make my comments follow the story at least...

I guess chubby guy owning a store and a pretty girl working the counter of a shop isn't uncommon... And hiring the protagonist, and having their own sorting system... Or some kind of idiosyncratic... Also, Susan's blonde...

EGS comic [ Click to expand ]

Also, male protag with powers is pretty common... I wonder if I can get this to SurprisinglySimilarStories levels...

or had rich parents that hadn't had more kids than most Mormon polygamists did.

Mom always told me the lot of us cost a fortune.

Lol. ... Are all his siblings, guys?? No? ... He has 6 sibs, but we only know about... 2-3?

And yes, all of Rob's siblings are brothers. Imagine the lives of the poor parents.

At least the bathroom would be free sometimes. Imagine that many girls with only one or two bathrooms. I'd be digging a hole for an outhouse.

Good story, slow going but great character building. When it all hits the fan it's going to be good.

Are you sure that's not Uriah ? Sometimes more than one mutation activates in the same family. Bonus Viagra points if they follow a "fertility religion".

Just little posts in response to various threads sprinkled her and there. oh, and somewhere there was an announcement that I had received Nebraska to do with what I will. So... zombies.

  • SPOILER ALERT
Below is a stream of conscious commentary I type up as I read the story. There will details from the story included in it. If you have not read the story yet and don't wish to have details of it spoiled, read no further.

    Hunger comments
A spirit looking for a host and in a weakened state like that, plus a host with too small a hallow which he forcefully increases and makes so his host can't resist him completely. This sounds extremely bad.

And a teen graduating high school, excited for college, having watched a lot of bad horror movies, oh boy. Plus an intense headache hits him like that, Robert's mom calls out to ask if he is okay, last of their kids to leave the nest. Two asprin and he is off. Wait a minute, 6 times, does that mean Robert has 6 siblings, they have 7 kids, yikes.

Scholarship but having to get a job just to live off nothing but ramen for 4 years, sounds like torture to me. Older brother Uriah going to same college but senior, missed football scholarship and agricultural sciences major now. A dorm called Pound Hall, wonder how it got that name. Ouch, all that to move his stuff and fearing a ticket for illegal parking if he parked by the dorm. Jayden Lovejoy [is that a play on Reverend Lovejoy from Simpsons?], Residence Director.

Room 313, that isn't ominous, no. 10 boxes full of stuff, he is going to be exhausted by the time he is done. Robert Russel gets to meet Jayden Lovejoy, explains where his 'office' is and his job, plus gives him a map of the building. Feels he is free for the first time in his life, able to do what he wants with his free time. Beaten up old lounge, check. Watching True Crime channel, yeah, I would pick horror movies over that too.

A shower that fast, dang. Taking the farthest empty parking space, hope he has an umbrella if it rains. Lucy Drennan, slacker blonde college girl who doesn't want to train the newbie. Category and then alphabetical order, seems reasonable for a book store to me. Romance, not horror, yet it has a ghost on the cover, oh boy, never judge a book by its cover. And the boss shows up, James Pollard.

And he showed up 10 minutes early to show the new guy the ropes and was going to let Lucy handle the customers, ouch for Lucy. Two guys hit on Lucy and both shot down, Robert thinking she is in a relationship already and he doesn't have a chance. Something smelling curdled and dry at the same time, weird.

Jayden nowhere to be seen, main entrance not locked, and someone else there besides Robert. Dan Krage, moving into room 214. The things in the box include slides, petri dishes and other things, along with a three-dimensional holographic electron microscope, portable version, dang, from the sound of it sold it stores now since Robert thinks it cost a few thousand. Ecological sciences, interesting.

Listening to his brother about college girls, might not be a smart thing to do. Lucy leaving early, wonder what is up with that. CSI: MCO, oh brother, only reason to watch that is to heckle them. Keycard and scanner, guess those would be a lot more common by then.

And the roommate shows up, Matt Steinberg. Plush office chair, good grief, taking that to college is just asking for trouble in one way or another. That is a lot of stuff to take to college, hope he doesn't get any of it stolen by someone. Keeping his chair instead of the dorm one that fits under the desk, not having a job lined up already, Matt sounds like a bit of a slacker expect probably with sports.

Weird, when had Lucy been in the store to leave that map for Robert and how did she get in? And of course his first customer of the day is a hot brunette which he simply directs to the romance section. Wait, why isn't he hungry again, weird. Store will pick up in a week, wait until it is packed and having to help out a lot of customers, he will regret saying he was looking forward to it then.

Alarm going off and Matt had to shake him away, already 10 a.m., something isn't right here. More tired than when he went to sleep, sunlight painful, oh no. Pain in his joints enough to need aspirin to help, almost sounds like they are stiffening, like rigor mortis. Schedule and other arrangements confirmed, not hungry again, this is serious.

Lucy annoyed he only showed up 2 minutes before he supposed to start work, she thinks he is going to be like all the others and eventually just stop coming in. Still not feeling hungry but knowing he has to eat, James shows up and no customers today. Boss doesn't check on him and just says to leave, doesn't need him to lock up, unusual boss indeed. Tired so his joints stiff and aching, plus snacks on some pop-tarts. He should be a lot more hungry.

Uriah wakes Robert up with a bear hug, ow. Robert is a 7th son, possibly of a 7th son, 7 kids and all sons, what are the odds. Uriah calls the room a dark cave, yet Robert thinks the blinds barely do anything, another sign things aren't good. Ugh, Uriah or Neb dating any girl that Robert so much as looks at, such nice brothers. And Uriah teasing him about being a math nerd and he should take a sport, just ugh.

Aspirin and sunglasses due to a headache, Matt not stirring [is that normal for college, I wouldn't know.], and Uriah being a perv as he shows his younger brother around campus. *bangs head against desk* No girl doesn't like the attention, Uriah is a moron! 'The spot', part of the college campus, yet some popular idiots think they can restrict it to only people they like.

Still hasn't eaten anything, thinking he needs to eat, what is blocking his need to eat. 5 minutes to spare, he got lucky after all the other stuff or had plenty of time before his brother detoured him. 7 days of that! And now Robert is ravenous, why do I have a bad feeling about this? And the source of the smell from before, a moldy old sandwich in the mini-fridge in James' office.

Shows up at the dorm with a hot girl outside using her heels to bang on the door and from the sounds of it cussing. Door locked yet not midnight yet, thought it locked at 11 PM according to earlier in the story. Laurie just moved in, Jayden says some joker is turning the lock when he isn't looking, could it be that simple. And she is even flirting with Robert, dang. She even has second shift at the local burger barn. Matt not there, Robert famished and unable to sleep, only fell asleep after Matt showed up and did so himself.

Oh boy, Matt can even see Robert doesn't look right, like he is sick, yet he is still going into work. Most places will tell you to stay at home when sick, not wishing for you to infect other employees or customers. In that bad of shape, yet forcing himself to go to work, he doesn't think that is enough to go see a doctor yet, even I would go to a doctor at that point and I don't like going unless needed.

Hits it off with Laurie, offering to send a map to her phone to Bluestem Books where he works. 5 minutes early and even Lucy is asking if he is in shape to work, you know it is bad. I like Laurie, joking about the romance section like that, Robert denying he has even seen tween movies, anyone who walked in on this would tell them to stop flirting. Okay, where did that voice come from that Robert heard? Don't tell me that spirit earlier is inside him and behind the lack of hunger/extreme hunger shifts and other stuff.

Voice in his ear and not in his head, even stranger. Laurie shows up to talk Nietzsche, but she is tired and can't stay long. Understandable, working and going to college at the same time is stressful. Staying less than an hour, Robert mentally tired yet body still ready to go, aches and all, he needs to see a doctor NOW.

Still having those aches after sleeping in on his day off, plus light too bright, at least he is getting a doctor appointment finally. Great, day off and just wishes to rest, yet Uriah wants to drag him off to do something. Comes back from showers and Uriah is telling the story he used to blackmail him to go out, Robert shuts him up with a threat of telling their mom about another incident.

Oh great, Matt is a fan of Uriah and thinks he is so great just because being a tight end on the football team and being a member of Thi Beta, ugh. And he wants to show his brother off to his bros in Thi Beta, bad idea by Robert to take Laura with them. Why is the hot water affecting Robert more, plus what is up with the creepy guy staring at him. Poor Laurie having to work at a chicken place like that, not even one of the major chains.

At least Robert takes his own car, and finds out they may be the top frat but their frat house is a wreck. Guess just the exterior is in really bad shape for the frat house. Terry, John, Ernest, and George, mix of different types of jocks. Public pool down the street, nice to know, especially when it gets hot. Trying to get Robert to join the frat with those kind of incentives, yet also those kind of things he has to do to help out other members of the frat if he joins. Could end up late for work with that deal by it being abused.

A day to think about it, plus ask him to leave to take about something, what is up with them. Ah, the Thi's are only the third best frat there. Alphas and Kappas have them beat, Kappas due to sister Sorority. Sound system up to 11 with metal, ugh, headache inducing. Girls who may or may not be 18 and even cougars, dang. Candi and Felicia hitting on Robert, guessing the frat guys set this up to try and help him make his decision to join. And who is that third girl, with the description I can't tell if fox is an expression or not.

5 girls all acting like that towards Robert, Uriah smiling at him, definite set-up. Drinking that much and not drunk, okay, non-normal biology with no eating and now this. All those girls trying to take him into a bedroom, plans derailed by going outside to a bench and having to switch seats to spend time beside Robert. So of course Laurie shows up and see the girls trying to get close to him, upset and goes to leave.

Oh boy, bringing the bench out into the little and chairs so everyone could sit down and talk. Talking with Laurie about what they talked about so far, best professors to take classes with, only Felicia, Vanessa, Brenda, and Lisa stayed behind. Warning about the teacher and teacher's aid who think they are God's gift to women and pervs. John dumps a drunk Matt off and Brenda leaves to be with John.

Robert having to help Matt to his car, finding he isn't that heavy despite his size, that seems off or is Robert stronger and doesn't know it. How is he still sober after all those drinks? Laurie texting a friend who dropped her off, thinking Robert is an axe murderer, he jokes about it. What is with Matt muttering about goat cheese and now the moon?

Jayden absent again, he is out a lot for Residence Director. Lugging Matt back and Laurie wants to spend some time with Robert if he has a day off tomorrow. Looks like Hell and now a voice speaking to him again out of nowhere, poor Robert. Lights out and he can see easily, all of these traits so far, no hunger, unable to get drunk, seeing in darkness, sounds like a zombie to me.

Wait, those women at the party were due to the spirit, dang. And Robert realizes the headache when he first came to Lincoln was this spirit entering him, been there this whole time. Uh oh, what does Robert have to do for the spirit in return for all it can do for him. Crap, the spirit has made Robert into a freaking type of vampire, headaches, trouble with sunlight, no normal hunger, not able to get drunk. It all makes sense now. Hopefully he only takes a little from Matt.

What will happen to those he drinks the blood of, what if he is starving and goes too far? It didn't say finished or such at the end of the story and the way it ended has me wondering if story stands on its own or is part one of the whole story. And you said it was a zombie apocalypse in Nevada, nice mislead on that or was it?

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • Question: why did he take two showers when his brother came over on his day off?

I grabbed some clothes and zipped past him; wonder of wonders, he didn't follow me into the showers and I was able to get clean in peace. Then the other shoe dropped, and I found out why; he'd decided to hang out with my new roommate.

    ...

He grinned. “I am. I'm busy taking you to party town! So take your shower, use deodorant, dress down, and let's go. Time to show you off to the brothers, do a little meet and greet.” He punched me in the shoulder for emphasis.

“You aren't going to take no for an answer, are you?”

“Nope.” He grinned out, his perfect teeth catching the afternoon sunlight in just such a way to make me squint.

“Fine, then I'm taking a guest.”

Uriah looked at Matt, who was wagging himself like a puppy. “No, not him. He's YOUR guest. I'm taking someone else if she's willing.”

“She, huh? Sure, I'll allow it. Matt here has already been to our first couple of parties, so one more won't kill us. Go get ready.”

Too late I remembered I was supposed to keep Laurie and Uriah separate. Well, shit. I started walking again, but I was sure he noticed, which was going to make today twice as bad.

The shower was a little odd; I had to tone down the hot water a little. That, and there was another dude in there staring at me; Just staring without any shame at all. Some sort of insecure high school age crap, I hoped. Well, he was a little smaller than I was, so I could probably take him if I needed to. I was the scrappy runt of a large family, after all, and well versed in dirty tricks.

As an aside: my daughter is so allergic to crustaceons that the pin prick test came back with a stronger reaction than the comparison sample of pure hystamine. Luckily, she has her own place now so the rest of us can have the occasional bit of shrimp, crab, or the like.

Microwave under the bed? As expected of Kettlekorn! But honestly, with the beds they have in Pound Hall, you'd need a pretty small microwave. Good thinking, though.

You can get feet to jack a bed up about 5-6 inches... not a lot but makes a world of difference in tight quarters... or if ya got long legs.

  • My favorite college room setup that I saw was I had a friend with a single who built a large wooden desk for his room. The rooms were long rectangles with a door at one short end and the window on the other. The desk went under the window, but it was thick enough that the bed no longer fit lengthwise, and putting it horizontal would have blocked access to the desk. So he lofted the bed and just walked beneath it to get into his room.

  • I have seen layouts (and even ready-made furniture) where the bed is lofted, like a bunk bed... and underneath it you have a desk/working space.

  • Yeah, I slept on one of those freshman year, when my university miscalculated and let in more freshmen than they had room for and decided to pack three of us into a two-person room (which I considered lucky, because lots of people ended up with no rooms at all for the first month; they camped in the common rooms). Had to remember to look before leaping when de-bunking. Only landed on a roommate once, but I stuck a foot in their faces a few times when I forgot they were down there doing homework.

  • The beginning was hilarious! "I'm okay, I'm okay, I'm okay, REALLY I AM!" - LOL!

    ---

Then things got sorta confusing, but cool! I'm quite sure I've got the gist of the general changes, but I don't know enough to tie things to the general concepts of the Whateleyverse!

... Really wondering if there's other mutants at the school and if some have some hints of what's going on. ... When Vlad didn't want to talk, I was thinking that someone was scanning about, being able to detect the Vlad-Rob connection if it energized, like if they talked...

But I dunno! So much vagueness and mystery! Really hoping that Rob will be able to be an ethical vampire, but dunno...

Also wondering if, and if so, how, this ties back into the rest of the world...

  • So Robert is a seventh son, interesting... Then he attracts a vampire spirit. Yipe!
Dude, it is a bad idea to eat more than once from someone you don't drain. Possible to turn them? Make zombis out of them?
Dude, if you can figure out how to do it, eating your brother (completely) might be a good idea, he's a dick and not that many people would miss him. I wonder how long it's going to be until Vlad has him entirely over to the dark side. I see dead Co-Eds in the future, or a plague of vampires!

In WU terms, Robert is an avatar 1 (?) with a spirit who is a bit too large for his hollow. While apparently old, the vampire spirit is somewhat childish and cranky, willing to screw his host over (to a limited extent) to get his way. Not exactly a venerable font of ancient wisdom. This is not The Spirit of The Vampire, just a vampire spirit.

Like many other avatars, Robert is taking on some of the physical characteristics (both strengths and weaknesses) of the vampire as well as some of the powers.

Like some others we have seen, it is not entirely clear whether Robert's status as an avatar is a mutation (we haven't seen any indication of his manifestation, but he began this story a bit older than most characters). It may be a hereditary condition (passed down to seventh sons, perhaps?) without the gene complex that marks a "mutant".

Since he is in college, it is possible that he will (or has) run into one or more WA alumni at school or in the community.

  • I liked the narrative ambiguity to the point where I wasn't sure if Vlad was turning him into a woman, or merely androgynous to the point that he could attract both men and women, to better feed on them. It wasn't clear if he was simply becoming attractive so girls wanted to be friends with him (either as a hot guy or as a girl friend), or if there was a subconscious glamour going on that was drawing everyone to him charismatic vampire lord/lady style.

Was it looks? Was it a glamour? Was it the others wanting a hottie (from both the men and women!) or was it a transformation Rob is denying, ignoring, or being deliberately manipulated into not admitting?

All the hints were there like the weight loss and the shifts in the way others were treating him, particularly out of concern. But that also could have been attributed to not feeding for so long. Which changes were permanent when "Vlad" was being fussy, and which were just temporary return of the hungry making Rob sick again?

I couldn't tell, but it left me craving more!

This is set in the USA, so we probably shouldn't read too much into that. It's pretty normal for people here to avoid doctors whenever possible.

Oh, yeah. My family didn't get here until the 1600's and 1700's, so when I came down with strep or my brother was struggling to breathe from asthma my parents usually took us to the doctor whether it got in the way of the entertainment budget or not. They even went as far as to keep our vaccinations up to date. Something from the old country about it being a bad thing to get lockjaw from puncture wounds.

I do like the speculations though, and I'm paying attention now.

Jorey, not quite correct, but on the right track. I don't really want to spoil anything like power specifics though; they aren't really necessary to the tale, at least not at the moment.
