  • I started reading and was immediately depressed. I can't imagine a worse fate than being trapped in a body with no ability to do anything...that might well be my personal version of hell. Moving along I had flashbacks to Ayla and was thinking, "Yup, someone is about to disappear and be experimented on". That rapidly became, "Wait, what? The mad scientist type is a good guy?". Then, everything pointed to a possible hostage situation... Morpheus, I don't know how, but you manage to keep making me wrong and I like it!

I'll give this a 5 of 5. We have a very interesting plot going on, an open ending for future expansion, a cliffhanger of sorts that makes me want to see the sequel right now and I am already fiending for more!

Morpheus took me through a wider range of emotions and internal thought lines than nearly any story of comparable length that I can think of while keeping everything neat and orderly. If not a master-piece it is at least a master-work.

  • I think that Nina should go with Iron Nerves for her codename, there aren't enough "Iron" based codenames around.

I wonder if it is a known villain that lent him the money, or someone new?

Dreamer, Glow's mom is Ginormous, not Stuperstar.

  • I had a thought as to which villain it might be, but then I remembered it was Gen 1 and not Gen 2, so that may have made my theory invalid... It sounds like something Lillian von Groenwald might have tried to me.

  • You know, it's possible there is no supervillain loan shark. We know that Faulkner's skilled enough to block her telepathy without using magic. It's not a stretch to imagine that he's not only blocking it, but faking the lapses that she thinks she's catching (she's very inexperienced, after all). This whole thing could have been intended to gain her loyalty and use her as a willing spy, either so that he can use the information himself, or so that he can sell it.

I mean, I can't be the only one who got the heebie jeebies during the scene when she convinced him to let her help.

That was a very good and disturbing scene. And at first I didn't think he was a bad guy, but thinking things over it's a decent to good possibility.
Great, fantastic and wonderful story. As others have said the scenes where she's feeling things for the first time in years was superb, and she was a real, feeling and breathing character.

  • It could be coincidental that now that Falkner has had a success, his benefactor suddenly needs to call in delinquent debts (e.g., Lady Havoc needing to see to her father's care).

Unless Falkner's a card-carrying Syndicate member, how would he know that the going price for solid paydata on the Liberty Legion would come out to equal the running principal + interest? When the loan shark wants payment in cash or liquid assets, usually things that can only be resold at a discount on an open market sit waaay down on the acceptable substitute list.

On the other hand, if he is Syndicate, his debt may have been (probably was) resold for cash or services, and it's the current holder after him, but the timing is suspicious even if it does make the story a story. So I'll bet that Devisor Boy hired a "discrete" nurse, Mary, instead of a well-qualified recent or illegal immigrant who wouldn't have sold him out for a bonus. (Bonus trauma if she's manipulating both Gerald and Nina! Likelihood of survival afterward: not good.)

Aside from all that, it would be neat if the new neural system could interface with power armor, manipulator arms (a la "Doc Ock"), or even electronic control systems (cyberpathy, security spiders, etc.), it would also be very, very resellable. Heck, with Nina's success, just about any normal person would sell the two out, assuming that they, the inventor, and the prototype might all be well-compensated.

Or Falkner could be lying about everything, having escaped from Project Manticore with potential super-soldier tech and now being ready to provide a demonstration using the Liberty Legion.

  • On the "Ironworks can move Nina like a puppet" thing: possible, but I personally think it unlikely. That would require that Nina's implants be ferromagnetic to get a decent purchase, and to the best of my knowledge biocompatible alloys tend to be non-ferrous.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Nina's condition reminded me of Martin Pistorius . But at least she had some psychic ability left.

She could probably spend some time bonding with FUBAR over their experiences too.

  • Well, he has Nina where he wants her. She thinks she is there to spy, but what if the implants let Falkner control her. Her spy mission could shift into an assassination mission at a moments notice.

  • Well I wasn't really expecting "Twenty-cent" there to be the villain behind Faulkner.

Well "Twenty-cent" wasn't on the Liberty League's radar, somehow I think that she will be soon. Glow, hopefully, will say something to someone, and that someone will start an investigation.

  • I was relieved it was Paradigm. At first, I was afraid all this talk of "investing" was going to mean Focus, White Diamond, and Tether. They're not typically murderous, but they can be when threatened.

I have no sympathy for Paradigm, so now I'm looking forward to seeing her beat...though I wouldn't mind if she knocked Super Star and Adonis around first.

Glow feeling so betrayed fit nicely for her character. Nina hit a wound she didn't know was so deep.

  • When did paradigm become so stupid!! Obviously Nina will never work out. Feeling trapped in a cage is a trigger for her for quadriplegic state. Eventually she must rebel no matter how gilded the cage might be. Utter stupidity.

Nina needs to find her way to Whateley and hopefully someone there will put Jobe on the task of fixing her. :)

Bets that Psyber might not get to Whateley, given that we haven't seen her? Then again, could she just not interact with anyone that we know? ... Possibly?

... How many Non-Whateley mutant kids have we seen, actually? ... Glow is definitely not going to Whateley, right? I'm sure we haven't seen her...

... Lol if Psyber goes to DeWinter or something.

  • Having caught up on part 2...

Glow, I'm... disappointed in you. She came to you desperate, afraid, in need of help. You rejected her. I get why, but you acted like, well, Glow, instead of yourself. Half of you, I guess? I'm disappointed, and I'm hoping you get slapped by Twist, your sister, Mel, or your mother for it. Grounded maybe. Something to remind you that as much as it would have hurt to help her after what she admitted, what you did was equally wrong.

As for the story itself? I'm loving it.

  • Equally wrong? Not even close. She has zero obligation to interrupt her plans for the day and take on who knows how much risk in order to intervene in somebody else's crisis, let alone somebody who has been actively scheming to throw her friends, Adonis, and maybe even her under the bus. She is allowed to say no. It's not like she's claiming to be a hero, cop, EMT, or anybody else under a mandate to provide help to anyone who asks. She isn't even a responsible adult who might be construed to have a societal obligation to help a minor in need. She's just another teen with plenty of her own problems to cope with. Opting to not get involved is in no way comparable to actively choosing to endanger other people's safety.

Quite a few, actually. Most were nameless background characters with little or nothing in the way of apparent powers. Others were prisoners/victims of the MCO, mad scientists, etc, at the same time as (or before) named characters.

Even something as simple as promising to tell someone who could do something about it that she happened to know personally might have prevented the kidnapping.

She's a teenager who has been badly traumatized in the past, she has no obligation to do anything like that. And considering how close the betrayal hit home, I'd be surprised if she offered anything supportive or helpful to Nina.
She does need to tell the supers because they have to be ready if any secrets were exposed, but that's about the extent of what she needs to do, and what I would consider realistic.

  • Breakdown is the only one who is potentially a problem. She could really harm Nina because she doesn't know how to repair something she's destroyed.

Jobe would find the cybernetic solution repulsive and ignore it entirely.
Hive might have a passing interest, at best.
Whisper isn't the type to hijack someone.
Jericho...maybe, but he'd be sympathetic if anything.
    Jay-Arm? Nah. No magic involved.
Mal...might want to study her, but would be kept in check by Jadis.
Belfatso? It's permanently fused to Nina, there's nothing for him to steal.

Belphy though...she might politely ask to study her and confer with Mal.

  • ACtually, this shows you how far Super Star's jerk cred goes. She KNOWS Whateley exists (since her sister/niece/something related named Starbright attends) but doesn't even hint that it exists... and Whateley is WAY better equipped to handle Nina than anybody else. Which has probably been stated.

I think I recall Word of Morpheus stating Glow wasn't going to Whateley, but I still can't wait for that whole kidnapping fiasco to finally catch up with them... when they find out Adonis died for nothing (since if memory serves Dana was basically entrusted to Pinball by Dana's father at that point, so there wasn't even a kidnapping)... well they aren't going to take it well.

  • Didn't Super Star show up for Parents Day?

Maybe we haven't seen the results of that yet, or maybe she just never happened to notice Dana that day. Dana saw her, that's for sure.

Super Star is just super self-absorbed. Just like her little sis.

  • 1) I'm not sure about Super Star in the Parents' Day. The one who went to visit her niece and ended up banned was Sureshock.

    2) I'm pretty sure there are other members of the Liberty League who are aware of Whateley. From A Glow in the Darkness, at least Bronze Lady and Ginormous are aware of it. And Twist is an alumna (class of 2005).

It isn't spelled out in the story, but I believe that they simply thought that Nina was going to be a poor fit for Whateley. For one thing, like Glow, she's too old -- remember, she manifested three years ago, so she should be at least sixteen. For another, she has a lot of catching up to do, study-wise, and tutoring seems a better choice than sticking her in the class with fourteen-year-olds.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Super Star is explicitly mentioned in A Little R&R 3 (Part 1). She hasn't caused any trouble from the audience's perspective because Dana saw her first.

It's right before Kaylie manifests and steals the scene. ;)

  • Billie is 16 (17 now).

However, the point regarding her needing to catch up to High School first is entirely correct.

I forgot about Twist, shame on me. Ok, so they know about Whateley... hey, maybe that could lead to a few interesting things happening with regards to learning about Dana... maybe Superstar WILL notice, but I doubt it.

Star Bright interacts with Amy and Alyss, not Gwen and Dana, so she has no particular reason to call attention to Dana, though it is possible she could get recognized. Which would just confuse the issue. I'm thinking more along the lines of a certain MCO agent dropping a phone call in to say, "Thanks to the testimony of the kidnapped boy, who wasn't actually kidnapped, we've got the bastard who killed Adonis dead to rights," or something. Try to patch up that relationship just a tiny bit.
