  • Apologies to everyone, this story was posted out of sequence and has been pulled back behind the curtain. To those of you who got the sneak peak, congratulations, you get a bonus! For everyone else, today's story is actually the third and final part of Parents Day, To Seal Our Happiness. Enjoy and if you got the sneak peak, ssssh!

  • That title did not fill me with good feelings. But now I know that I was wrong in my assumptions, and feel glad.

Also thought it would be Bladedancer-related... What with the other "Tea and [X]" stories?

I thought she died at the beginning... "We are sorry to inform you" and all.

Oooh! Solon has a chemical formula!

"World Without End" from "Pillars of The Earth"? ... Dunno anything about it.

Woah. Jadis... Is that just appreciation of another's girl's greatness? Well... You aren't gonna hook up with Ayla, so that's sorta confirms the "not lesbian"?? ... But that LesYay is STRONG...

    That ending! So much heartwarming!

And Misty is so accepting, too?

    ...

Repercussions of Solon-5. ... Totally putting my bets on "She's the carrier of the MGC in the family" and "She's gonna mutate."

Oh, and that it is indeed an Alzheimer's Cure.

  • No Jadis had dibs in the Tea.... titles before blade dancer was even a thing. Because of tea with the devils daughter.

Also I never thought grandmother died. They would not inform someone of that in a text esp not someone that well off.

It's nice to see Tansy having friends again fits with character growth we have seen for her. Also I would like enough solon 5 for a regimine myself please.

I would like to see more of Jadis really over all. She is a interesting character.

I've contended, and there's plenty of evidence going back to her introduction chapters, that Misty is far less of a ditz than she comes off. She's almost as calculating as Jadis, which is why they fit so well together.

    She just doesn't show it.

But Jadis' feelings about Tansy were the real highlight of this chapter. Understanding all the crap Tansy has come through to be back in a place where they can be friends again. They've both been through a lot of pain, but now exist as a little refuge for each other. Like when they were both in middle school.

Can't wait to see how this plays out years later.

  • Short and (bitter)sweet and nice to read. I assume that this is part of the setup for a thanksgiving '07 story arc. I imagine that the Dawsons' doctors might have rigid views on 'untested medications' (state of the art supervillain devisor drugs), providing a good opportunity for Kodiak and Grizzly to render opinions on Solon 5, Alzheimers, contemporary human witchdoctoring (medicine) and Thanksgiving dinner.

This short IMO also fits well with Dr Dad's likely views on Alzheimers with respects to his SMIILE goals. He would likely see it as some sort of abomination.

Now having Ember light some sort of Thanksgiving bonfire while in Boston, that could provide some opportunity for comedy.

Have a look for "Tea With The Black Dragon". :D

It's am interesting look at both Tao-ism, and a murder-mystery, with a background of magical-entities-being-real.

The being-informed-by-text was probably the knock-back from the Solon 4 trials.

  • Indeed, both of my Tea stories are call backs to Afternoon Tea with the Devil's Daughter, so that is very much intentional. I suppose I'm not giving anything away to admit to saying if you see 'Tea' in one of my titles, you can count on a Jadis appearance. They are besties, after all, even though neither of them would put it quite like that.

As to Boston, well, it wouldn't be a Whateley story without SOME hi-jinks, now would it? Of course, we still have to get through Halloween first...

No, Chou was mentioned in Afternoon Tea with The Devil's Daughter.

Afternoon Tea With The Devil's Daughter wrote: She (Jadis) gave me a big smirk. “Are you trying to tell me you got a good roommate somehow? Who’s this paragon of wholesomeness you landed, and how did you find her?”

I smiled, “I’m rooming with Bladedancer.”

  • Actually, the first "Tea" story was Bek's "Tea and Synergy".

And I don't think of Misty as "smart hiding under a ditzy façade," I think of her as "intuitive." Like, not so much for logical-mathematical intelligence, but really high on the interpersonal intelligence, so she's good about realizing things about other people.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Totally agree here, and this is sort of what I was going for. Unless Misty is a secret plant of some SINISTER organization!

My impression is that Misty is the product of the Very Small Town clique system. How does a girl find a safe place when there is already a queen bee? Play the fool. She knows where to put herself in the hierarchy so she comes of as nonthreatening and isn't bothered. My suspicion is that's how she acted at whatever tiny school she went to before she manifested.

There's moments where she drops the act. The first foray into Boston when she immediately assesses the situation when Jads starts barking orders. When she's first hanging out with Wondercute, asking some particularly out-of-character pointed questions. All the King's Horses.

How did she immediately find a place with Jadis? She plays stupid ignorant. Jadis gets to do what she loves best. Exposit. She doesn't want anything from Jadis, she doesn't need protection because she found her way into Wondercute, she gets to enjoy what she enjoys.

I also wouldn't be surprised if a couple of interviews with Misty allowed Carson, Hartford, Michiko, and the Melville houseparents to hatch the plan to solve the "Jadis Roommate Issue."

  • Just had another thought responding to another thread.

Misty is confirmed to be an exemplar with the full mental package in this story, not totally sure that's been brought up before.

If Misty has Exemplar brain, and perfect recall, doesn't that mean when she starts going on a Confusion Blather tear (that Jadis likes to take advantage of), doesn't that mean Misty is doing it 100% on purpose? She shouldn't have any issues remembering the order of events, but her Confusion Blather technique has her jumping back and forth on sequence of events and sidebars every time.

It's also possible that her cognitive function stack favors intuition and feeling over sensing and thinking. Being a teenager, she might not have a great amount of experience translating how she understands or remembers things into the linear, concrete narrative that the majority understands easily. That doesn't mean that she isn't smart enough to take advantage of the confusion :)

  • I believe that a lot of people think that the 'Exemplar' trait somehow turns a person into a computer. This is not so. If a person has a disorganized thinking pattern before acquiring the 'exemplar' trait, they probably don't gain a lot of organization when they gain the trait. They may well remember everything, but be unable to place it on a time-line for example. Or they may be able to recall an entire field of data but not organize it in such a way as to create a sensible picture to themselves or others if they try to present the field of data.
In other words, being an exemplar doesn't necessarily make one more logical.

I wonder how Whateley Academy works with this sort of situation.

One of Coursera's most popular course is "Learning How To Learn", and i could see it being feasible that Whateley Academy would have some form of teaching this, as well as organisational techniques, like the Renaissance Memory Palace, or the more modern Structural Analysis paging structures, that would allow Exemplars to improve the mental equivalent of muscle memory.

It's something that i have used successfully as a work-around for my ADHD, so i could easily see it being used as an adjunct for helping Exemplars deal with Galahad's, or Deidrick's Syndromes.

(Though in the case of Deidrick's Syndrome, it could just mean that the person undergoing a Deidrick's fit just becomes more functionally effective during an episode... :D )

  • It also goes the other way around.

Whateley staff and upperclassmen also know how to trap exemplars. Gen 2 brought up how easy it is to trick an exemplar by teaching them a less than ideal path the first time during the driving tests.

So my expectation is that the Academy curricula relies far less on memorizing facts, and more on analysis. That way it is fair to both the exemplars and non-exemplars.

I want to see some of the test questions from Imp's Art History class (which are typically all memorization).

Bubble from Ayla's English Lit class was an Exemplar. There are lots of Exemplars that do not get the "mental package."
