  • Woah, a mutant gang! Really rare? Their appearance was a surprise, and so was Bombastic!

How did Bombastic escape? And wondering about the future of the Portland Power Patrol... And their past...

Lol if they register as sidekicks or whatever, to Beth's group, eventually.

    ----

Kara and Amy's interactions were nice and sweet!

Have we seen Kara's Uncle Phil?? Wiki has no link from Statuesque's page...

    ----

Surprise history between Agent Wylann and Roulette? Or I just didn't remember that he was named.

  • If only Roulette knew someone related to a professional teleporter.

I guess Roulette has to wait until Monday to get yelled at by Carson again.

I was expecting Kara to manifest at some point while dealing with the Possibly Perfect Portland Power Packing Paragons of Patrolling.

    Don't Drick and Drive.

nonsense, what you should have been expecting is her to already have manifested and doing a REALLY good job of hiding it so the Whateley forms could be part of her Christmas present to Amy.

  • So, Amy is home for Thanksgiving... Nice little family interaction there. We know that her mom is a typical mad scientist.... Amy builds a coil gun Neat
Swaps spit with Kara... Pretty much de jour. Expected like good relations with her mom and 'aunt' Beth.
The Puny Pussy perpetrators claim all of Portland? Not with Amy around. Oh, Mr Ito is a sadistic bastard until you get into a tussle and realize that Yes, you do know how to deal with idiots who are depending on being Ubermenchen to carry them through...
Disguises coil gun going trough airport security... Maybe not as good an idea as you think... Then again if it is unloaded.. Are they going to demand that you load it with ammo? Carry a few ping-pong balls for that and just say it is a gag gun... Fill one or two with glitter and just enough explosive to turn them into a cloud of glitter when they hit a person... Maybe even include some glue with the hot pink glitter? Making you opponent angry can keep them off balance!
Back at Whateley, thinks it is sort of surreal to have a lecture by an MCO agent, who she knows (though until then she doesn't know his name. Gwen's dad of course, Amy thinks, only at Whateley, and she's right on that count!

Hehe, I love Kara, calling the school a prison is just too classic.

It is a classic gag. ("We're just here for our felon. Come along now!")

“I just hope that when I manifest, I don’t end up as a devisor. You guys are all crazy.”

“I’d argue that,” I replied as I started towards the armory, “but I know too many devisors.”

And the fact almost everyone thinks Jade is a devisor doesn't help. :-P

There is still that minority opinion that she's a demon. Unless she's a vampire queen, because that could happen.

    Dreamer wrote:

    “Team Awesome?” Kara asked curiously.

“Imagine a group of hyperactive little kids,” I instructed. Now, give them all powers.”

And with that description you pity anyone who has to babysit them, well, except Murphy, she makes it fun for all.

    Barely controlled powers, at that.

Last seen in "Diamonds Are A Vamp's Best Friend, Part One" - she's the student with enough of a mad-on for She-Beast that she turns to the Spy Kidz.

FWIW, I enjoyed the supervillain fight, although still I don't think the Portland kids realize how big the gators in their swimming hole can get.

  • Amy has a grenade launcher!

Though it does use her mom's standard bomblet design. This could be really bad for the mail service.

Let's just hope her mom doesn't try to miniaturize the singularity grenades...

Earning the respect of a mutant street gang could make for a very bizarre Christmas break.

Moreover, she also applied to the Future Superheroes of America, but after viciously going after Sheba, she was unsurprisingly rejected.

Well, we know now she didn't get expelled after her display of gleeful rage.

Her presence does leave openings for a few interesting developments, especially now that the FSHA have taken a particularly militant stance regarding bullying of LGBT students. There may be more than a few potential students who aren't incredibly happy with the way the FSHA has been operating the last two years. Not going far enough (Amazons?), their tolerance of villains and the Seeds (Williams, Geist, Nemesis, etc.), or the morons like Bravo, and so on.

  • Must say the pump action grenade launcher is rather smart, easier to conceal and move around with than a conventional drum fed, and the ability to lever action load special rounds

  • A neat little story!

I don't really have anything to offer in the form of criticism something other than a few comments.

The pump action grenade launcher was awesome, almost like a shotgun. And I had been thinking lately that while there's an abundance of pistols and rifles, shotguns seems to have been overlooked by the students.

An earlier comment mentioned that Kara may well have manifested already and is just waiting with the reveal until xmas. Well, maybe. But maybe she just won't manifest? Not everyone gets to be a mutant.

I liked the PPPs, a nice little addition, and good to see that not all problems are caused by supervillains or ridiculous paramilitary douchebags, but sometimes just some punks who wants to be big and bad.

A good story, please do continue.

That could be because of the spread shot pattern and a lack of penetration. It's easier to hit something but harder to avoid collateral damage with missing shot (a body shot to an exemplar might take out one or both of their eyes - not good for training.) The same could be said of some powers.

I think it's been pointed out elsewhere that without a spirit, an avatar could go for years without knowing they'd manifested. Karl could still end up at Whateley after the Winter Break to train up on the powers granted by The Firebird.

But you can fire pretty much anything out of a shotgun that fits into a shell's diameter along with powder load and wadding. Sabot rounds penetrate very far.

Birdshot or buckshot is just the tip of the iceberg.

The real problem is that they are seen as being "too primitive" and while if you want high accuracy it has to be designed into the slug, as you have a smooth bore usually, that shouldn't be a problem for the students.

The TLDR: It's a Morpheus story and all Morpheus stories are great. Not as epic as Shenanigans, but it's focused on just Roulette, so I can't expect it to be. Interesting how The M is taking a break from R & R to give the 2 individual stories for Thanksgiving.

Insanity: for when normal just isn't interesting enough.

    Actually, we do know:

Roulette 2: Taking Another Spin wrote: My coil gun was similar in nature to both my rail gun and my needle guns, in that it used electro-magnetic fields to fire metal projectiles. However, this one was different in that the projectiles were metal spheres, each the size of a golf ball.

And for the size of the gun itself:

Roulette 2: Taking Another Spin wrote: My new weapon was about a foot and a half long, a lot harder to hide than my needle gun, but not impossible.

it does solve the problem of Team Shenanigans not having much in the way of heavy hitting medium range options beyond giving Ribbon stuff to throw and whatever spells Darqeheart can do. Most engagements will start when combatants can easily see each other with the naked eye and when possible, they will try to keep it at that range.

At that size, you might not need nanotech/ devise to do all the things, might even be able to add in a grapple hook capability, provided a harness.

Compiler had a cheaper more efficient way of making Cobra Tangle-web ammo.

true, but beyond that, with the size of the ammo, she could put one of Bunny's frost eggs inside it or Monkey's banana peal fluid, or glue bombs. Way easier than having to rely on a single supplier

Yep. She was last seen at the end of the story , when Lodestone runs into her, and Bombastic decides she's her new partner (unaware that she was already one of her previous partners, when she was using the Ironworks setup).

A Glow in the Darkness, part 3 wrote: Maxine suddenly noticed movement from the corner of her eye and snapped around, staring at the wrapped up bundle that was Bombastic. Bombastic was awake and moving again, and obviously trying to get out of the net. There was an explosion as Bombastic used her concussion blast, followed by two more. Finally, Bombastic tore her way out of the shredded net, grinning broadly.

“I hate getting put in timeout,” Bombastic complained to herself. “But it was an interesting game. I just might have to demand a rematch sometime…”

Bombastic paused as she noticed Maxine, giving the girl a curious look. Maxine gulped, suddenly realizing that her ally had never seen her outside of her armor before. None of her allies had. And at that moment, Maxine was quite aware of the fact that outside of her armor, she was vulnerable.

“Ooooh,” Bombastic purred, slowly starting towards Maxine with a curious expression. “Are you a new toy to play with?”

Maxine fought the urge to run, reminding herself that even without her armor, she wasn’t helpless. “No,” she answered carefully, knowing that she could easily set the crazy mutant off. “I’m not a toy. I’m a player.”

“Do you want to play with me?” Bombastic asked, her eyes lighting up with eager anticipation.

“Not today,” Maxine told her with a forced smile. “This game is over and I’m tired.” Then seeing the disappointed look on Bombastic’s face, she quickly added, “But we can play another time. Maybe even team up. Wouldn’t that be fun?”

Bombastic hesitated a moment, watching Maxine with a thoughtful expression. “Maybe,” she reluctantly agreed. “But I don’t know if I want a little girl on my team...”

“I’m not a little girl,” Maxine protested, standing up as straight as she could to stretch out what little height she had available. She looked Bombastic straight in the eyes and proudly announced, “I’m thirteen…”

Bombastic nodded at that. “That’s different then…” She suddenly held out her hand, announcing, “I’m Bombastic.”

Maxine hesitated for only a moment before she reached out and shook Bombastic’s hands, being wary of the clawed fingers. “I’m…Lodestone.”

“Lodestone,” Bombastic repeated the name slowly, as if trying it out. Then with a broad grin, she said, “I look forward to playing with you, Lodestone.” And with that, she turned and ran, leaving Maxine behind.

“It looks like I have a new name,” Maxine mused as she considered the codename she’d just made up on the spot. It might be useful, since she didn’t want people to know that she was Ironworks.

Fortunately for Maxine, she managed to slip away from her 'playmate' before things got nasty again. We haven't heard the details of what happened, but from "Brief Glimpses", we do know that Focus is her sponsor .

Once Maxine was sure that nobody was following her, she slipped through the door of a small café, then made her way towards the back corner. There was already someone sitting at the table, a man in a nice suit, with dark hair that was starting to turn grey.

“Maxine,” he greeted her politely, gesturing for her to take the empty seat. “I’m pleased that you were able to make it.”

“I had to ditch a couple of my classmates,” Maxine responded. “And our upperclassman escort.”

The waiter came over and poured a glass of water. Maxine took a sip, fully aware of how they must look to the wait staff or anyone else who saw the two of them sitting together. Most people would make the false assumption, that the man sitting across from her, was her father. They had no idea that her dad was dead, having been killed a year ago by some overzealous hero. And if they’d known who her current companion really was, most people would have rushed out of the café as quickly as they could.

Maxine’s companion was a semi-retired supervillain known as Focus, who was not only her mentor, but also her sponsor to Whateley Academy. Focus was the one who paid for her tuition, and even gave her a decent stipend for spending money.

And yes, he's the same Focus who had previously sponsored Tether :

Maxine bowed her head. “I appreciate everything that you’ve done for me, Mister Focus.”

The truth was, that if it hadn’t been for Focus, Maxine had absolutely no idea what she’d be doing now, or in her future. When they first met, several months ago, she’d been focused on taking care of her father’s unfinished business, collecting on the debts owed to him, and dealing with his unresolved grudges. Focus was the one who made her realize that she needed to start thinking about her own future, and who’d offered her several opportunities she’d never considered.

“Why don’t we order,” Focus suggested, picking up the menu and only glancing at it before closing it back up. “We can continue our conversation while we eat.” Then he smiled faintly before adding, “I recommend the lobster roll. I became somewhat addicted to the lobster rolls here when I was meeting up with Michelle , the last girl I sponsored.”

Maxine nodded at that but continued looking through the menu. There were several interesting looking items, but she decided to go with Focus’ recommendation. After all, he was the one paying for the meal, along with her education, so it didn’t hurt to humor him.

(On a side note, I suspect that Lodestone might still be a Fae, just not a Sidhe; there are other Faerie such as Dwarves (who were famed as smiths, after all), Kobolds (who contrary to D&D, originally were similar to Brownies and Hobs, but are also associated with 'disappearing' iron in mines, hence 'cobalt'), Knockers, or some forms of Kabouters (again, similar to Hobs, being among other things the classic shoemaker's faeries of Dutch lore), which wouldn't feel ill effects from cold iron, after all. More to the point, I think (as I had happen in one micro) that some of the Fae on campus will think she is one even if she isn't. I and guessing actually being Fae would be even more annoying to her than being mistaken for one, though.)

I'm thinking Lodestone and Koala will have their own support group, and attempt to procure funding so that they can prove they're not fae, and don't have to listen to Nikki or Cody about any of that Five Fold Court garbage!
