Below is a stream of conscious commentary I type up as I read the story. There will be details from the story included in it. If you have not read the story yet and don't wish to have details of it spoiled, read no further.
Imp 8: Imp-rints on an Aching Heart part 1 comments
Ouch, I know how Imp feels about mornings, I'm a night owl myself. Devisor coffee to help her wake up figures she likes that stuff. No time for anything more than coffee or late for class, ouch. Ooo, a new painting in the works. The Village, Tuesday morning, Nov 27th, 2007
Hehehe, now I really want to know what that painting is going to be of.“The knee bone is connected to the…thigh bone,” I cheerfully sang. “The thigh bone is connected to the…tail bone. The tail bone is connected to the…elbow. The elbow is connected to the…neck bone.”
“Thank God she doesn’t teach anatomy,” one student commented.
Yikes! Imp is scary when her mama bear side gets stirred up by seeing Melissa in such shape. Ah, so that is the reason for the early gifts of the holdouts for Melissa, prepare for the counterattack. Darn, the stupid video has some students nervous or worried around Imp now.
And once again reminded to stay on Imp's good side, you don't want her pranking you.“If I find out who leaked that video,” I quietly promised, “they’ll get itching powder in their underwear drawer.”
Everyone dress up as Bob Ross, why Monkeywrench, why. Hard clay for carving, now we get to some of the interesting stuff. And once again I wish I'd Imp as my art teacher. Nice quote for a Saturday Night Live reference.
That poor, deprived girl, growing up without Scooby Doo.However, a couple seconds later, one girl asked, “What does zoinks mean?”
Now at Area 91.
Imp is definitely teaching a unique survival class for the students today. Urban escape and evasion with an Imp twist, goodie.“Zombies,” I announced in a serious tone. “You never know when the zombie apocalypse is going to break out, so you have to be ready.”
Ouch, now we get the source of the story title, finding her true home and now being looked at like that again. It was frustrating to have kids look at me like I was a serial killer…and teachers. Anderson had been a bit more wary of me since that SIM match, but that hadn’t stopped him from asking me to look after his class for him.
Barney is on an involuntary leave of absence, good. The students are going to be the zombies, now there is a twist. *blinks* Try to eat each other's brains, another unexpected twist, Imp is good at those.
This sounds fun, why can't normal schools have stuff like this?“Those of you with ribbons are uninfected,” I explained. “Zombies will chase after those with ribbons, trying to take your ribbons. If a zombie removes your ribbon, you join the zombies and try to get the ribbons from others.”
“Oh, I get it,” Monkeywrench exclaimed. “Sort of like a cross between flag football and tag.”
“Bingo,” I responded cheerfully. “Give the monkey a banana.”
Peacock as patient zero, this is going to be fun. Nice use of her power to get the first guy, when running away sometimes looking back is the worst thing you can do. Crud! Melissa is on Team Zombie, they are all doomed!
Sneaky, putting in a real-life lesson into the game. This exercise was a lot of fun, for me and the students. However, that wasn’t the only reason that I’d chosen to play zombie apocalypse today. In the real world, you could never tell when you’d be outnumbered and chased, whether it was by Humanity First, supervillain minions, or a random angry mob. This was good practice for that kind of situation.
Only two students escaped becoming zombies, dang, Melissa on Team Zombie really did tip the scales a huge amount. Nice to see Melissa so happy again. Tagged by Blackbox because she went into a dead-end alley, at least it is a lesson learned in a game and not real life facing an angry mob.
A first time anyone had ever called THAT number, can see why Imp is a little freaked out. Doctor M, calling in a favor...just great. I hope she doesn't get in trouble with a group of revenge seekers again because of this favor.
Evening now at Schuster Hall and Imp is smoking on the roof, heh. Louis didn't show up to chat with Imp, hmm. Ah, the now infamous dome and Imp's reaction to it is perfect. Watching for a while and then going to get a closer look for herself, Imp restrains herself from making silly Dr. Seuss references, now that is some self-control. Seesh, don't tell me Everheart let that video change her opinion on Imp or is she just in a bad mood right now?
No reactions from the dome being poked by the barrel of a gun, nor Imp's PK aura around her hand. Only 20 yards walked away from the dome and it went pop, let Everheart and security handle it now.
Interesting expression.“Not my circus, not my monkeys.”
Imp dragged in for campus security issue about the dome, Carson in her 'comfy' clothes, there is a rare sight.Schuster Hall, Wednesday early morning, Nov 28th, 2007
Hehe, wondered what nickname Imp would have for Grimes. Everheart and Delarose there as well, this is very serious.Elyzia Grimes, or Magica De Spell as I sometimes liked to call her, was the very stereotype of a witch. Not the ugly old witch with green skin, a hooked nose, and warts, but more the kind with a slinky black dress. I probably should have called her Morticia rather than Magica, but that was just too on the nose.
Bwahaha, nice Velma and Rodney Dangerfield references. At least Louis finds it amusing, I sure did. The dome blocked tech including the security cameras while active, magic scrying, and Louis' psychic powers, dang.
Well now we know why the security cameras can't always be counted on for evidence. All those things which couldn't penetrate the dome, I know it was stated Killzone is a powerful warper but that is scarily powerful.I watched them all with a thoughtful expression, then commented, “I believe some of the cameras have local recordings and battery backups…”
“There are some that do,” Everheart agreed, though not looking happy. She looked to Carson as she continued, “As you know, about half the gadgeteers and devisors on campus try finding ways around the cameras, just to prove they can.” Her eyes went to Grimes. “Similarly, some of the magic students also try to find ways around them…”
Delarose cleared his throat and said, “That doesn’t even take into account all the other students who sabotage the security cameras just to hide what they’re up to.” His eyes went to me, a silent accusation since I myself had done that once or twice.
“The cameras are repaired as soon as possible,” Everheart continued, “but they can’t always be repaired as quickly as we’d like. As a result, between five to eleven percent of security cameras are inoperative at any one time.”
So they detected Killzone and his group bypassing the campus wards, good.
Always wondered how the wards worked exactly, nice to have an answer.Grimes gave me a look, then began to lecture as though I was a student. “The campus wards are very powerful for the standards of this world, but we simply don’t have the resources to make them completely impenetrable. At best, we are able to direct the wards to blocking or redirecting threats or intrusions from the most obvious, dangerous, relevant directions, along with many others. However, there are still…holes…in them.”
And Everheart has already identified their most-likely suspect, Killzone, she works fast. I love how Imp reacts to Grimes' question, plus her thoughts about villains gossiping. That is some good info from Red Riot and even knowing Killzone's father is Widowmaker. As for the dome itself, our investigations have determined that it was less a force field and more of a stasis effect, caused by space somehow being out of phase.”
“Perhaps a powerful warper,” Louis suggested. “Though any who was able to create such a powerful effect would have to be very high level."
And of course, they know Porcelain is Widowmaker's daughter, guess she is going to have to answer a lot of uncomfortable questions sooner rather than later. Imp thinking Killzone was just here to visit his sister, when she learns the truth... I wonder if Grimes can adjust the wards to keep Killzone out permanently or if his power can adapt to such changes given time and effort. I hope Porcelain tells them the truth about the attack, for her sake and that of everyone else at Whateley.
Late morning and Imp is sitting on top of a building again, watching students scamper as they head for lunch. Aww, worried about Melissa but wanting to let her deal with things on her own.
Darn it, they can help you if you just tell them. Flying out to meet up with Doctor M about the favor she owes tonight, so soon. From what I’d heard, when Porcelain had been called into security, she’d denied knowing anything at all about the dome, or about the possibility of her brother arriving on campus. Of course, neither Delarose or Carson believed her, but they couldn’t prove she was lying.
Razorback and Jericho heading towards Aegis, Razorback playing keepaway with Jericho's hat, no wonder he stumbled into Aegis. Lessons in situational awareness, after what happened on their Christmas vacation you would think Jericho and Razorback would be better about that.
Evening and already in Upstate NY, that was a fast flight. Priceless, a reference to the Addams Family.
A classic line like that and he has a normal gait, what a letdown. In that shape at his age, yet still has iron determination in his eyes, Doctor M must have been a terror in his heyday. He wants her to recover something from Venture.“I was told to expect you,” Lurch said with a scowl, gesturing for me to enter. “Walk this way…”
Just has to be someone competent. He was reputed to be a competent hero who’d caught a lot of villains over the years.
An artifact of power which Doctor M once had, Venture has it locked in his trophy room, well this just even more complicated.
And Doctor M must have it back in his possession within the week. Don't tell me, it will restore his health, youth, and power once he possesses it again but only within that time limit. And even worse, coming out of retirement to go after a hero like this could very well end up costing me everything.
All that travel for a brief discussion, I would be cranky myself. Walking to breakfast with Maria and Donna, I love Imp announcing her entrance into the Crystal Hall.Whateley Academy, Thursday morning, Nov 29th, 2007
Ah, a battle I know too well. And Tabby joining them for breakfast, nice to see her again.“My bed,” I promptly answered. Then with a cheerful grin and a swish of my tail, I explained, “It tried taking me prisoner this morning. I mean, it wrapped me up with its sheets and didn’t want to let me go. I fought had and long, and in the end, I managed to claim victory and escape it’s clutches.”
Tabby telling the tale of Exquisite and her crew attacking a security team. And rumors of them attacking someone who can disappear already going around. Imp and Tabby denying they think Melissa was behind what happened, nice. Lillian Dennon used the match footage as a training demonstration, interesting.
Ito wants to put Barney through a semester of BMA, nooo!“She used Roland as an example of what NOT to do in a fight,” Tabby explained. “Which is a good idea, because he did so much wrong…”
Maria nodded at that. “I can definitely see that. He’d be a prime example of what happens when you rely on your size and strength, while neglecting skill. A lot of bricks could learn that lesson.”
“I saw the fight,” Donna said with a shake of her head. She gave me an odd look, one that was just a little wary before the expression faded. “It was…brutal.”
A foe who loses his temper is always easier to deal with, sounds like especially in Barney's case. A necklace stuck to Imp's shoe, she is Aegis' relative! Maria thinks someone is pranking Imp, if she only knew the significance of that necklace.
Now at Arena 99, training Melissa how to avoid detection without using any powers.
Black outfit, black domino mask, red jacket. *facepalms*“Maybe,” I responded. “But how do you know he doesn’t have cybernetic eyes that could see you? Or that he isn’t a mutant with extra senses?” Then, before she could respond, I added, “And remember, right now, we’re doing this without powers. You need a good grasp of the basics, which means, not having to always rely on only your powers.”
No tools or holdouts, that sounds like advanced lessons. Using the SIMs to train Melissa without taking her on a real job, fun. Who doesn't put in alarms on windows on higher floors nowadays, that seems foolish to me. Slowly making their way to the destination, nice lessons on how targets might hide their valuables.
Aww, now that is worthy of a hug.The safe was empty, except for one item which had not been in the real-world version. It was a small trophy with a plaque that read ‘WORLD’S BEST APPRENTICE’.
A Mike Tyson quote, interesting. Now for the escape plan.Actually, it had been in my plan. “As a famous poet once said, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”
Touche' Turtle and another Elmer Fubb reference, very nice. Melissa sticking to no-powers and still escaping, she has learned well. Heh, guess throwing spikes might not be for Melissa. And the taser gloves save the day again, potent non-lethal devises. Already acting like a mother to Melissa and keeping some things from her father, heh.“Touche away,” I called out, though it was actually time so shift from tortoise mode to hare. “It’s WABBIT season…”
Late afternoon with Imp heading to the cafeteria.
Calling in a favor from Bob, now things get more interesting. Imp going over to talk to Grimes, help with the necklace. Please let Grimes figure out what it is. Oh good, Grimes knows what it is and how it has been modified.None of the time I spent with Melissa was wasted.
I thought Imp might be related to Aegis somehow, similar powers, an orphan left behind or was he? Could another poster's theory about Imp being lied to all those years ago about a miscarriage be right?“Instead of tracking the person whose blood this is,” Grimes explained, “this spell has been modified to track their blood relatives.”
“Blood relatives?” I asked in surprise, my tail freezing in place.
“Yes,” Grimes responded, giving me a curious look. “Whomever this blood came from, they are related to you.”
“Imp-ossible,” I exclaimed emphatically.
And Grimes recognizes Voodude's work, top marks if submitted as a project, dang. And with what Grimes just did it will lead straight to Aegis now, this is going to be awkward on many levels. Heading towards the Quad, Imp thinking it is a prank especially when she sees who it leads too. A table with Voodude and the necklace pulling towards Aegis.
Oh god, what Imp is feeling right now, gently grabbing Aegis' face to take in every detail.
You have me tearing up her. Aegis is her son. She was lied to all those years ago, told she had a miscarriage and her son stolen from her! All because of how she looked and what she is, that is evil. Please, please let someone help Imp and Aegis reunite. My whole body was shaking and I could feel my heart pounding louder and louder with every step. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I was too shocked to even utter a single word, much less some snarky comment.
Impossible. This was impossible. It couldn’t be… Aegis couldn’t be… But in spite of that, it was. He was… Tears welled up in my eyes.
In a shaky voice, I finally whispered, “He has his father’s eyes…”

He could also be her nephew. Her brother Danny has a daughter with Down Syndrome; if his wife became pregnant again they could have given their child up for adoption because they couldn't see how they could raise two children. Thus, he could have Danny Boy's eyes.

I am with you on that point, null0trooper. Because Imp miscarried after a savage beat up from Barney. How is the kid surviving that? Also, I guess it happened while the kid wasn't developped enough to have been viable, because if not, even dead drunk Barney would have noticed something. And used that to hurt Imp more.

He could be Danny's son. But that raises the question then, was she crying because she, beyond hope, was hoping that Aegis actually was her child, somehow, and was disappointed he wasn't? Or was it because, somehow, he turned out to be hers?
What do we really know about that story other than she was attacked by Barney and, presumably, had a miscarriage? That's "just" how Imp remembers it. Possibly that was a serious trauma and she might have blocked some things out, or something.

Exactly. The great ambiguity of this cliffhanger will lead us to speculate but the crumbs from Morpheus are leading to a reuniting of mother and child.

Some points:
- Not all pregnancies are equally noticeable. How many stories you have heard of high-school bathroom deliveries where nobody, not even the mother, noticed the pregnancy? Imp is an exemplar, her pregnancy probably did not slow her much, nor did it make her look particularly fat. And Barney, well, he's not the most perceptive of guys.
- How badly was she beaten? Maybe she was out of it for a considerable time. If Doc was treating her, and performed an emergency caesarian in an attempt to save the baby because he thought she wouldn't survive... well, there were no next of kin, and he had his hands full with Imp, so he might have "abandoned" the child in an hospital with good premature neonatal care. When she surprisingly beat the odds and survived, he found it easier (and less dangerous to himself) to tell her she had lost the baby than to tell the truth.
As for the alternate hypothesis of Aegis being her nephew... no, it doesn't explain the tears nearly as well, but it's still a possibility. And not just by the "hands full with the Down-syndrome daughter" scenario. More simply, Danny might have had an affair at some point. He might not even know his one-night-stand got pregnant.
The possibility that I'm inclined to dismiss is Aegis being Imp's half-brother from some indiscretion on the part of her father. I don't think the numbers add up -- Gregory Kade is said to have died "in the late Eighties". Even if he died in late 1989 right after getting his mistress pregnant, Aegis would still have to be at least 17. But he is a freshman, supposedly around 14.

Domoviye wrote: To everyone wondering if Imp's fetus could have survived somehow and about doctors, No.
With Imps regeneration and the assumed stage of her pregnancy, she wouldn't have needed any medicine to help remove the fetus. She'd just have a few days of heavy bleeding and one or two with lots of soft jelly like stuff coming out. Medicine could cut it down to a few hours, but that would require Imp wanting to go to the doctor and asking for help. I don't really see her doing that.
So there's no chance that Imp has a long lost child running around.
And now Imp is clearly a recovered Woobie. While she isn't a woobie at present, I'm glad she has Melissa giving her plenty of hugs, she needs some.
And this explains some of the things Imp has hinted at, suggested and stated about relationships. The way she commented about not worth the pain, how she actively avoided them, not really wanting even a one night stand so she hadn't had sex in 8 years, it wasn't just not liking the available dating material, which always sounded a bit half hearted, but the fear of getting pregnant again. Since she believes that even if Barney hadn't caught her, she'd have eventually lost the child somehow, everytime she got into a relationship, she'd be worried about getting pregnant again and having to go through the heartbreak all over.
Well done.

I like to think that Imp told (or will tell) Carlson that the favor was being cashed in, just in case things go haywire on the mission. Obviously, Whateley won't interfere in the operation, but they would want to have contingencies in place.
With regards to how Aegis and the Imp are related, I think the final line is the most telling. It was already established that Aegis and the Imp are related. This line indicates that the Imp knows who Aegis' father is. The only two (likely) possibilities are that his father is her brother, or that she knew who the father of her child was and that Aegis is a future member of the Bad Seeds (if the news gets out).
In Imp 5p3, there's a line about Williams being Imp's ex-archnemisis. What if he was also her ex-boyfriend, despite her denial? He is conveniently absent from campus at the time the necklace was activated, so the pendant wouldn't have the possibility of flipping between targets. This possibility would also put a dark(er) spin on his attack on her, changing it from a 'simple' act of vigilantism to a case of domestic violence. What if she had been planning to meet up with him at the museum, not knowing he was T-Rex?
In response to Sir Lee's question, the Imp has stated she was beaten half to death and nearly drowned. Depending on how long she was under, she may have had to recover from Total Cellular Starvation from her regeneration working overtime.

Barney moved closer to me and continued his rant. “I was arrested for indecent exposure. I lost my civilian job and my fiancé. You turned me into a laughingstock…”
“To be honest,” I responded a shrug and a cheerful smile, “You did most of the work.”
I'm not so certain that they were lovers, not that an engagement prevents some folks from having a sidepiece.
The timing of Barney crossing the line does fit Chris' age, but I'll wait to see if things are really that simple.

Then she either died, or else put the baby up for adoption to give him a chance at a stable childhood instead of making the poor thing grow up in a single-mother household where super-mom is regularly putting her life on the line fighting villains as the Asterisk.
That'd be great! Or at least convoluted in a funny way?

Btw, just so we all know. Asterisk is Broadsword's brother, Mark Kelly.

So, if the Doc relates to all this, why is his favor being called at such a relevant time??

That twist! So twisty! But when it's all explained, it makes sense!
...
Aegis wants to know! Depending on how much he wants to know, he might get even more desperate, since this plan failed... Could Voodude make a tracker for the tracker?
Go to Jadis, as a Fixer and a Mage, for help??
...
Venture hiring a mage to track Pitchy?? Getting in touch with the IRS??

Take THAT, you doubters!
It was never said how far along she was in her pregnancy.
Those who presumed she wasn't showing 'cause no way would Barney attack a pregnant woman... get real. The man is an ass. He probably thought he was preventing the next generation of Eville from being born if he thought about it at all.
Eventually... Chris is going to find out some of his background; whether he finds out that Barney attempted to kill his mother while he was near term... that I'm not gonna touch.
But he will eventually learn who his mother is.
There is just so much fun that could happen down that path that it's got to happen.

Below is a stream of conscious commentary I type up as I read the story. There will be details from the story included in it. If you have not read the story yet and don't wish to have details of it spoiled, read no further.
Imp 8: Imp-rints on an Aching Heart part 2 comments
Oh boy, having to put on her Candice face the day after that big reveal to her, Imp is a true professional to not cancel. One of three artists whose work is being showcased, nice. Interesting and whimsical, with things hidden in each piece and a man spotted one already. Ouch, Ryan not showing up tonight, talk about worst timing possible.Boston MA, Friday evening, Nov 30th, 2007
Metal Maniac making Ryan miss the event, yikes, lucky she just wants to be repaid in drinks. A man with a PK shell admires her work, shakes Candice's hand, hope I'm not overreacting thinking this is someone out to rob the exhibit or a superhero trying to out a suspected supervillain.
A very interesting image, wonder how many can spot the subtle details? Kyle Vasquez, hhm. Tom and Jerry, great inspiration imo. El Puno, midlevel villain, interesting. Bwahaha, having to remind herself to behave, priceless. Yikes, that is one way to convince Rebar she is really the Imp. 10k to hire Rebar to distract Venture for an hour or 2, now that is good pay.
Nice, I would love to go to an art gallery like that. And over half of Candice's paintings sold, very nice. Interesting, so El Puno not casing the place, nice to know what areas a villain works in. Saturday morning open classroom sounds very fun. Hehehe, retired but you can't take the professional thief out of Imp.Boston MA, Saturday early afternoon, Dec 1st, 2007
Alicia Thacker and Adalie Vitesse standing next to one of Candice's paintings wonder if they will recognize Imp's style. Of course, Alicia knows who Candice Kade actually is, wonder if she will blow Imp's secret identity to Adalie. A nice cover story, the truth with some details left out. And Alicia will keep the secret, but with so many people know the connection how long until it gets blown on accident?
A shopping trip to Boston and Alicia just had to check out the gallery, fate is funny sometimes. Creating a true masterpiece, sometimes an artist creates one but is too critical of their own work to realize it. Bwahaha, the mental imagery of Razorback showing up in the art gallery, too good.
Now in Cleveland, Ohio with Imp crouching down on top of a statue somehow brings to mind Batman: TAS. Interesting costume for Venture, rare to see a superhero riding a motorcycle. A garage door hidden behind a dumpster designed to automatically roll out of the way, nice set-up.
My sides are going to hate me tonight after this story if this is any indication. While I worked, I quietly sang, “Na na na na na na BAT IMP!” What can I say, I loved the classics. “Bap. Boom. Pow…”
An interesting vehicle that last one is, almost sounds like something the kids at Whateley would cook up. A whole building for a base and looks like a broken down old building from outside, very nice cover.
If only more people in their word were given such advice. Barney for one.“Keep it professional,” I reminded myself.
My old mentor and father figure, Frank Cowan, had told me that a long time ago, and I’d taken it to heart. That advice…that motto…had served me well during my career.
Doing the job now to keep herself distracted, oh boy.
Not even halfway through the story and my sides are starting to hurt from all the laughing, too good. A trophy room on par with Batman, dang.“Elevator go down…,” I intoned, channeling my baby Plucky.
A vault broken into aisles guess he has to organize all his trophies. And a stuffed wooly mammoth, curious how he acquired that. Ah, legacy hero and current one the third or fourth. Nice Speed Buggy reference.
That is more than a little creepy. There were replicas of numerous villains, with labels on the platforms that identified the trophies as DIAMOND DUDE’S MASK, THE LEPER QUEEN’S STAFF, MACH-5’S BOOTS and THE HIGHWAYMAN’S GUN. I absently wondered if the Highwayman would want that back since he’s upgraded his weapons since then.
Comet Queen replica and one of her actual costumes, even creepier. This feels less like collecting and more like hoarding. Taking things from rookie heroes, starting to sound like the current Venture has some mental disorder.
Oh crud, this scepter sounds artifact-level to me.The figure was holding a golden metal rod, about sixteen inches in length. An intricately carved sphere decorated one end, and from openings in the carving, I could barely make out a glowing gemstone.
Got the goodie, now don't get greedy and get out of there! What she replaced the scepter with, perfect. A fake figure of the Imp, this Venture is a real piece of work. Hehe, seeing Imp's old costume, glad she ditched the capelet too. A black metal infernal trident in the fake Imp's hands, a weapon Imp used in her early career called Pitchy. Lost it in an escape and never replaced it, can see why.
And trashes the fake Imp with Pitchy, nice. Darn, would have been nice if the smoke cartridge had worked. Ack! Venture back alert and suspicious, very not good. Pretending to be her own figure and holding still, a classic bit. Rats, it almost worked but at least Imp dodged the energy net.
Shoot, lockdown and has to use Pitchy to deflect another energy net, how for Imp to escape this time? Only one exit, double yikes. A grenade with fast-hardening goo to trap his opponents, interesting. Bwhahaha, man the taunts are too good. What the...how can anyone ignore Imp's taunts? Nice AFHV Jackalope reference. Herding Imp, now he should know better than that, it is harder than herding cats.

He can see her while she is camouflaged, that helmet has some good sensors. Using Trick and Treat's grenades, one confetti, one a stink bomb, and an explosive one which sends Venture flying, yay! The Black Shield's Shield, good defensive option. Ducking while yelling DUCK season, even in a serious fight she keeps up the funny well. Darn, the old knee to the groin didn't work.
Seesh this guy is very good, Imp having to go on the defensive again to block a barrage of darts. Please let the second spike have damaged one of Venture's bracers, Imp needs a break already. He took a cyborg's cybernetic arm as a trophy, that is way too far! Kid Chaos' Disruptor Cannon, the Kid sounds like he brought about his own downfall.
Ooo, Venture doesn't want her to fire the Disruptor Cannon, do it, do it! Take out the elevator and time to escape, can see why Venture was afraid of that weapon, more like disintegrator cannon. Wally Gator reference, I love all the old cartoon references.
On the 2nd floor now, a training facility should have some interesting things for improvised weapons if needed. At least her PK claws are able to cut through the metal shutters and window so she can finally escape the facility, but you have to wonder how far Venture will go to try and capture her.
Escapes to an empty room in a nearby building, safe now and with the scepter and Pitchy in hand. And add another enemy to Imp's growing list she will have to deal with again. Pitchy is collapsible, nice.
Hehe, bring Grimes to Doc M's place just for the ambiance, Imp likes to live dangerously. Lurch sure is excited about Imp getting the scepter, loyalty to his master or something else? Interesting painting, wonder who made it. And Doc doesn't believe Imp retired, not the first, probably won't be the last.Upstate NY, Sunday morning, Dec 2nd, 2007
A painting made by his wife just before her passing, she was very talented. I hope the scepter isn't for an attempt to resurrect her though.
Well, there goes that theory.“What now?” I asked Doc curiously. “Are you going to fix yourself up and come out of retirement?”
Doc tore his eyes from the scepter and fixed them on me. “It’s too late for that,” he answered, his voice noticeably weaker than it had been a few minutes earlier. He was exhausting himself, just talking to me. “I’m dying and have very little time left. Its too late for even this to save me…” His eyes went back to the scepter.
Lurch is James, Doc's grandson, wasn't expecting that. Ouch, James' daughter Sarah has a degenerative disease which is slowly killing her, if he can save her all power to him.
Like I said earlier, getting artifact-level vibes from that scepter. Ouch, seeing him dying like this. Doctor Miracle, one of the few superheroes she ever truly respected, definitely wasn't expecting that.“If she bonds to my scepter…it will not only halt the progression of her disease…but reverse it.”
Afternoon in Rochester NY now. Ringing a doorbell and freaking out, don't tell me it is connected to Aegis and what was revealed about him to Imp. Ah, it's Chris' adoptive mother, this will be interesting.
Ouch, my sides can't take much more. Susan Matthews, I feel like Imp is going to be crying by the end of this chat.I gasped in mock offense. “I am not a cat burglar. I’ve never stolen a cat before in my life.”
Talking about Chris, it is almost like two mothers talking about their sons with each other.
Ouch, lost her first husband Greg when Chris was a toddler. And her new husband Alan accepted Chris as his own, good man.I shrugged at that. “He’s an interesting student…and determined. All I had to do was point him in the right direction and let his own stubbornness keep him going.”
Susan was Imp's childhood best friend before she manifested! Fate is working overtime on this one it seems. And Candice's parents lied, saying she got sick and passed away!“I actually named Chris after an old friend of mine…my best friend growing up.”
“Really?” I asked.
“Of course,” Susan said with a chuckle. “I couldn’t just call him Candice. She hated that name anyway… But her middle name was Christine, and she’d always preferred that one. So, I named Chris after her…”
Priceless, simply priceless learning about Imp's childhood like this. Crud, that last story was too much for Imp, she has revealed her identity as Candice to Susan.“Candice always found the most interesting ways to get into trouble…and she always took me along for the ride. I remember one time, when we were about twelve, Candice and I skipped school and snuck out to go see Ms. Might, who was doing some kind of publicity event at the mall. Candice actually yelled that there was a superhero fight outside, and when everyone else ran off to go see…she walked right up to Ms. Might and asked for an autograph. The look on that hero’s face was priceless…”
Ouch afraid her best friend would turn on her like her family had, her family is a real piece of work.I stared down at my hands, unable to meet her eyes. “I…I was ashamed of how I looked,” I quietly admitted. “And after the way my family treated me, I was afraid of how you’d react. I was afraid that you’d turn on me too…”
Having to tell how her life has been since she left, the pain of staying away and then it getting harder the longer she kept holding off.
Perfect gift from the Imp.“The toaster,” Susan blurted out. “It played pop goes the weasel whenever it popped the toast…and absolutely nobody would admit to giving it to us. But…I’d always imagined that it was Candice’s ghost…your ghost.”
She didn't have a miscarriage, after all, Imp knows how to keep her secrets well.“Fate,” I repeated, though my voice cracked. “You desperately wanted a child but couldn’t have one, and I…” My heart leapt up into my throat and tears welled up in my eyes. “I had one that I couldn’t take care of.”
Dang, you have me tearing up with Imp now.
So Barney didn't cause a miscarriage, but the cowardly attack did force her to give up Chris instead of retiring and raising him.“But in spite of that,” I admitted, giving a pained smile, “I planned to retire. I was going to find a nice safe place to raise my baby…for us to be a family. I had a dream for our future…a hope…” Then I paused and shook my head, bitterly adding, “I should have known better…”
Susan visibly gulped. “What…? What happened?”
“A superhero happened,” I answered, spitting out the word ‘superhero’. “I was still pregnant at the time and had started my…maternal leave. I was minding my own business, not causing any trouble when…I was attacked. He beat me nearly to death, then tried to finish the job.” I snarled as the old rage bubbled to the surface. “It was a miracle that I…that we survived.”
Bwaaaa, she could have been his mother but chose to give him up for his own good. Arranged the adoption so Susan and Greg got Chris, at least she assured him a good life.“So, I did the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” I told her. “I gave him up. I gave him to someone I trusted, who would raise him as her own, who would give him a loving home, and a normal life. I gave him to someone who could give him everything I couldn’t.”
Chris doesn't know and Imp doesn't want him to know, waaaa, I want them to be reunited.
But he wants to know why he was given up.“I…I gave that up,” I told her. “I’ve regretted the need to do it every single day since…but its too late to take back.” Then I took a deep breath and continued, “Besides, there are some things he’d be happier not knowing…”
Imp, after all Chris has gone through I think he could take the news fairly well, just as long as he doesn't have to join the Bad Seeds.Chris wanted to become a superhero, so I could only imagine how horrified he’d be to discover that I was his mother. To find out that he qualified for membership in the Bad Seeds. That knowledge could break him, or at least, drive him away from his chosen path.
Aww, she wants to keep interacting with the baby she gave up even if he never knows she is his biological mother.
*sigh* Guess we aren't getting a heartfelt reunion any time soon. Help Chris be the best hero he can be, them crying together hurts so much knowing Chris won't find out the truth any time soon.Susan gave me a serious look. “Chris deserves to know.”
“Maybe,” I reluctantly agreed. “Probably.” I shook my head and let out a sigh. “But not now. He’s already having a hard time and this would only make it a lot worse for him. Trust me, this isn’t the kind of thing he’d be happy knowing.”
Evening and back at the Village now, Imp planning to get some sleep when she gets a surprise as Ryan is waiting at her apartment door. Oh crud, Venture contacted Ryan about Imp, this is bad. And now Imp is having to explain about an old associate calling in a favor, shocking Ryan when she reveals it is Doctor Miracle.
Ryan’s eyes widened at that. “Doctor Miracle was MY hero growing up… He was the one who inspired me to become a hero…”
Now I see why he inspired so many and one of the few superheroes who Imp truly respects. The scepter halted his aging process and without it, yikes!Doctor Miracle had been one of the first costumed heroes, and he’d been active since the late thirties or early forties. But unlike a lot of so-called heroes, he didn’t really chase after criminals. In fact, he’d once told me that he was a doctor, not a cop, and that his job was to save lives…not punish bad guys. Sure, he fought his share of villains, but that had always been secondary to protecting civilians and saving lives.
At this rate the current Venture is going to leave a taint on the legacy and have to be taken down when he goes too far in public.I nodded at that. “He’s been trying to find his scepter ever since, and only recently learned that Venture had it. Apparently, Venture bought it on the black market for his collection. When Doc contacted him, asking for it back…even offering to pay a LOT…Venture refused.”
Doctor Miracle is the one who saved Imp's life and that of her unborn child after Barney's beatdown, shoot, he wouldn't need an owed favor to ask for my help. Dang, wonder when she will tell Ryan and Carson about Chris being her son. Imp is right, that is a lot of weight on her heart lifted, but still more she needs to unload.“That seems appropriate,” he grudgingly admitted. Then he stared at me for several seconds again. “There’s one thing I don’t understand?”
“Only one?” I asked with a grin. “Then please, explain string theory to me, because I just don’t get it…”
And this is why I know Imp will be a great mother. My child wouldn’t know what I was to him, but that wasn’t going to stop me from doing everything I could to help him achieve his dreams. I was going to help him… No, I was going to help THEM…the son of my blood and the daughter of my heart.
This story had a lot from start to finish, first wondering about Doctor M's favor and the nature of their association, I thought he was a supervillain from her past, but I've never been gladder to be wrong. Finding out her connection to Aegis and all the guessing that lead to as to their relationship. We should have known, this is the Imp, when has she ever told the truth about her past except when feeling vulnerable and to those she truly trusts. I'm glad she will be there for Chris and Melissa, I just hope she eventually opens up to Chris about being his biological mother.
Doctor Miracle, now there is the kind of superhero I've been wanting to hear more about in the Whateley Academy Universe. Someone who cares more about saving lives and protecting civilians over fighting villains. I wonder if his granddaughter will follow in his footsteps now and become the new Doctor Miracle, or even if she is young enough that she might end up at Whateley to learn the extent of the powers the scepter grants her.
This story had great moments of comedy, pop culture references, and real tear-jerking moments that made me tear up. Morpheus, I hope you have more Imp stories for us in the future.
Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked.

From my reading, it sounds like Doctor Miracle saved Imp's life and that of her unborn child, but in such a way that Imp was able to carry Chris to full term before giving birth to him. At least from what Imp said.Malady wrote:

Edit: Finished, a lot less nefarious than I was thinking (Adoption) I imagine Mrs. Carson will be saddened to hear about Dr. Miracle's impending demise.
In the end reality is only consensual! It means that Al Gore is causing "Global Warming" by his rhetoric alone! Fortunately, there are enough Global Warming "Deniers" still about to keep him from boiling the planet.

Pitchy got me thinking, in Whateley collapsible melee weapons are actually a good idea provided they have sufficient strength and the wielder has abilities that can complement or enhance the weapon, for Imp due to the range of her PK it was mostly useful for theatrics, and some increased reach, but I wonder how far Aegis can extend his PK, his abilities seem similar to hers, but she can do a few things that he can't, such as the chameleon field, and in that regard, he can't hide his PK, but I have to wonder if there are things he can do that she can't.

I disagree. He is still somewhat immature, and this much moral and emotional complexity would be a bit much for him. Not to mention his likely reactions to the fact that a current Whateley teacher (and a former member of the class of people he intended to become - heros) had tried to kill his genetic mother and him while he was in utero. He would be all too likely to throw his life away seeking revenge on Barney.
As it stands now, he has a loving (adoptive) family, a mentor, a supportive environment in which to learn and grow, and a nagging personal mystery. And time to make real decisions regarding his life path. Given time and perspective, he should become much better equipped to handle the facts.

It's still unclear how far along the pregnancy Imp was when Barney attacked her. I would say farther than first trimester -- far enough along that she had already gone on "maternity leave" from her regular activities. She probably didn't have yet her magical disguising bauble, because Barney was able to find her as a "civilian."
How far along? Well I don't think she was at the "swallowed a watermelon" stage. Probably showing a bit, but Barney is enough of an unperceptive asshole that if it wasn't ridiculously obvious, he ignored it. Might even have mocked her for "getting out of shape."
Not all pregnancies are equally obvious. Some mothers show more than others. Imp is not described as petite, and she's an Exemplar, so she might show less than average (OTOH, she's hardly overweight, which helps conceal the pregnancy bulge).
Should Imp tell Carson? Sure, both regarding Aegis (due to the ethical implications) and about Dr. Miracle. *If* she chooses to tell the whole story, including her "recovery mission," she might want to warn Carson about Venture's unsavory hoarding. I mean, collecting Carson's clothes is a bit sleazy, but finding the power source of a fellow hero and refusing to return it is downright assholish. Can you imagine, say, Green Arrow finding Dr. Fate's helmet and refusing to return it to Kent Nelson because it looks good on his wall?
(By the way, there were several half-homages to the Batcave in that vault. The giant dice/giant dollar bill reminded me of the giant penny in the Batcave, and the wooly mamooth referenced the T-Rex... also the costume displays, and even Venture's hyperfocused attitude was reminiscent of the Batman)
Now, telling Aegis? Way more complicated. First, there's the whole thing with appearing to be "trying to replace the only mother he knows." The boy HAS a mother.
Then there's the whole stressing his worldview by turning him into the son of a villainess, not to mention being almost-murdered by an alleged hero. He has to grow up a bit more and realize that things aren't that black and white before he can assimilate it. He's beginning to realize it; he used to assume "monsters" were automatically evil, but now he not only has a few as teammates, but he is actually attracted to Darqueheart (who, one might note, resembles Imp a bit -- maybe an Oedipal thing down to his genes?)
Thing is, Imp might not be allowed to wait until he matures a bit more. He is already sniffing around campus for blood relatives. He knows he has at least one, and Imp's own behavior when she was following the amulet (holding his face and saying he has his father's eyes) might have given him a big clue.
(And, by the way, WHO is Aegis' father? Imp obviously knows.)
Too bad Parents' Day has already gone by; it would have been a good pretext to acknowledge that Suzie Q and Candice had been friends when kids. Having a social contact to Imp outside the teacher/pupil relationship might help. But, well, that ship has sailed, and now it should be a while before there's another excuse for Susan and Imp meeting openly.
TL,DR: Venture is an asshole, Imp should tell Carson an Aegis, but telling Aegis might be problematic.

I don't believe revenge is likely, the issue is a bit more intricate than that. It comes down to why he wants to be a hero, it's been a while since he's said it but IIRC it's because he believes his birth parents to be heroes and wants to find them and make them proud, right now learning that his birth mother not only isn't a hero but a villain albeit retired villain that he has come to respect, could break him. He has trouble enough as it is right now thinking him and Darque could be a thing because he thinks she's going the villain route, even though she's probably undecidedjoreymay wrote:

Her statement about his father's eyes can be covered by telling the truth, to an extent. How was Aegis to know that Imp was his mother's BFF? (It's remotely possible that Chris' are similar to Greg's.) It might be best to hear about Aunt Christine from his mother, with all the teen baggage of knowing that Mom must have spies everywhere.
Sir Lee wrote: (And, by the way, WHO is Aegis' father? Imp obviously knows.)
The Art of Being The Imp wrote: "About ten...maybe twelve years ago, a so-called hero named the Crimson Kid was chasing after a guy called Monster Max, who was basically just a thug who liked smashing things...
"The Kid got away with murder, and Max, who wasn't really guilty of anything more than property damage...was executed."
Considering the many ways that students end up sick or injured, there could be good reason for someone to know about Chris' biological ancestry, whether anyone else knows or not.
Venture's collection habits are disturbing. Mrs. Carson might be due a full debrief on that and Mr. Miracle (who she may have known personally). A strong point in favor of disclosure is that Lady Astarte won't fly out to Cleveland to kill the guy. Asking SPECTRUM down in Cincy to point Madcap in his direction might not violate the Geneva Conventions.
Trivia questions:
* Is Venture one of the Lake Erie Sentinals?
* Aquerna's bigoted family gathers for Christmas in Cleveland. Between them and Venture, why not celebrate this year with a Thor shot to downtown? Fey's father and brother are surely living in the DC area these days.

To be fair, she did just grab his face and didn't mention the eyes until after she had left, so unless Aegis also has superhearing, he wouldn't know about that.

Why bother? It's not some irreplaceable artifact. He could just make a new one. The only problem is that it takes a lot of essence. But that's fine. Finding a way to hook Voodude up with essence can be the plot hook to get Aegis and his team into more shenanigans. In fact, this would be an excellent excuse for Team Shenanigans to form an alliance with the Three Little Witches and work together!Malady wrote: Could Voodude make a tracker for the tracker?

Or settle with being his crazy aunt. When he starts asking questions, he should be told, but perhaps with someone else there too, like CarsonKettlekorn wrote: Regarding whether to tell Chris, there's a third option: lie. Claim to be his aunt and come clean later. It avoids the issues telling the truth would have, while causing less anger at the inevitable moment of entruthening. Care would be required once he starts asking questions about Imp's "sister," but the need for lying could be minimized through creative application of the truth. "I never knew your mother in adulthood because I ran away from home. But as a kid, she..."

Because it takes a lot of Essence, so he can't make a new Family Tracker as soon as Aegis would want, but he could make a Tracker Tracker to get basically the same results, but faster.
We dunno if Tracker Trackers are basically as Essence intensive, though.

Christmas vacations sends Aegis back home, yes, but it does not provide a ready-made excuse for Susan and Imp faking their "meeting for the first time since they were teens." The whole point being to create a context in which Aegis accepts Imp as part of his personal life (instead of just being his teacher) before the whole "I'm your mother" thing comes up.Kettlekorn wrote:
Not that long. This story pushed us into December, so Christmas Vacation is just around the corner.Sir Lee wrote: Too bad Parents' Day has already gone by; it would have been a good pretext to acknowledge that Suzie Q and Candice had been friends when kids. Having a social contact to Imp outside the teacher/pupil relationship might help. But, well, that ship has sailed, and now it should be a while before there's another excuse for Susan and Imp meeting openly.

Why would they need to fake it? Both women are adults: neither one has to account for their whereabouts while Chris is at school.

If faking were actually necessary, they could just manufacture an excuse for Susan to pick Chris up from Whateley in person. It's only an eight hour drive from Berlin to Rochester, so she could claim she felt like taking a road trip with her son, with it doubling as an opportunity to say hello to this teacher he's been raving about without having to wait until the next Parent's Day. Then they're free to arrange a meet up later in the break for for prank caroling or whatever.
There's also Plan B: Casually mention to Melissa that if by chance she were to throw a big Christmas party for all her new friends, she should remember to invite their parents as well so the grownups won't feel left out.

Who is the father? (Did I miss this?)
When will Imp come clean? (And Where?)
Will we even find out if Venture gets in trouble?
Will Voodude get the credit for the magic item?

From my time spent in CLE, the immediate fixture that jumps to mind is the solder and sailor monument in public square for the horse and rider, though the buildings around there tend to be a bit taller than was described.
Thus far, the Imp has tried to drill into Aegis' head what a 'bad' hero looks like. Perhaps the next major step in her instruction will be to paint for him the picture of what makes a hero someone she can respect. Undoubtedly, Doc M's actions will be mentioned (particularly if he's still working through his anti-GSD bias). This nugget of information could be one more building block in filling in Aegis as to whom his birth mom was.
Looking forward, I wouldn't mind seeing a friendly sim match between Aegis and Mischief. At some point, the former will need/want practice dealing with a heist in progress and the later will need to spar against someone other than her mentor.

The return volley obviously, would be a class-action lawsuit to "repatriate" the 'war trophies.' This could eventually lead to the Venture Estate going bankrupt, and him joining the Imp Revenge Squad!

I think that Venture will not sue Imp. Why? If he (or his estate) sues Imp, they will admit that they were vulnerable to her sneaking in and taking something (no matter what that something is), On another note though, I totally agree with everyone else who has said that she needs to inform Mrs Carson of Venture's proclivity to collect trophies that he hasn't won, and inform Carson that for all Imp knows somehow Venture has collected a complete costume for her (including used underwear!!!) and that he wouldn't return Doc M's stuff even after being offered a more than reasonable inducement...Katssun wrote: Wild speculation here: I think it would be funny if Venture (or the Venture Estate) tried to sue Imp. When did Imp fight her?
I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

Long enough ago that a statute of limitations may come into play?
Sun Wu Kong, on the other hand, may have been more recent.

Anyone who is foolish enough to take action against the Monkey King is probably slightly insane and may set off the apocalypse just to see the fireworks!!!Sun Wu Kong, on the other hand, may have been more recent.

The real question is will she tell Ryan who Chris is first?

Sir Lee wrote: Uh, I thought that the textbook definition of GSD "proper" (not the other syndromes that tend to be loosely lumped in with GSD) was that it comes from an undesirable BIT? And that the presence of a BIT is what defines the Exemplar trait?
So, maybe Imp does not have GSD by the more strict definition, but one of those other syndromes? I wonder which one?
I don't remember exactly, but it was a major factor in the Ayla stories. GSD is a genetic trait while being an exemplar with an undesirable BIT is only "GSD" in quotes. Alya went to his various sources twice, once when he thought he had GSD and then again when he discovered he actually had a BIT.

Whateley did a very thorough background check on Imp, and Liz Carson asked Imp to be Chris' mentor.
Co-incidence?

Probably, because then she'd know what Williams did too, all she knows is that it was something big because Imp doesn't hold grudges, she's professional, when things get personal, she settles the score and moves on, but despite it being over a decade ago, the score isn't settled, so all Carson knows is that there's a score between them that can't be settledannachie wrote: Two things come to mind.
