  • Might have been talked about in the first go round, but after my reread one of Reach's assumptions began bugging me: the perp didn't have to be a Package Deal Psy, they could have been a Psy who did have all the required traits but could use them all at the same time.

Is my logic flawed, or am I missing some bit of info about PDPs and Other Psis that explains why we don't see more Many powers at once Psis?

  • The Wiki wrote: A Package Deal Psychic (PDP) is a mutant who has the esper, telepathy, and telekinetic talents, all at once. Mindbird of the Wild Pack is a PDP. Unlike the more conventional esper, telepathy, and TK talents, this appears to be a single trait, although usually the possessor can only exercise one of the three parts at any time. Also, PDPs manifest "mainstream" applications (clairvoyance for the esper, mind-reading for telepathy, levitation or a PK shell for PK), rather than the more exotic applications. Still, PDPs can learn to apply their talents in ways that can mimic the more exotic applications. Additionally, most PDPs fall into one of two physical categories — either they are extremely healthy, athletic, attractive individuals who could easily be mistaken for a low level exemplar, or they are very poor physical specimens who can't get in shape no matter how hard they try. Those who study mutant biophysics find this syndrome very confusing.

One very strange part of this particular puzzle is that the first mutant with the modern meta-gene complex, Gian Han, was a PDP.[1] However, the PDP package was quite rare until recently.

What I get out of this is that pyschic mutants with the full set of psychic powers can only use one at a time, but nobody's really sure why. So in theory a mutant like the one you postulate could exist, but nobody's found one yet.

(There is some speculation, as I recall, that the Silver Ghost is a "PDP 2.0" but we'll have to wait until she gets full powers testing to find out.)

How does the perp possibly being panpsionic rather than PDP affect the story being told? Just because Reach said "PDP" doesn't mean he was referring to the categorical nomenclature that means a certain kind of psionic. He may have just been using it as a shorthand for someone with those abilities, whether they are able to use the abilities at once or serially. Most people do not speak precisely when bouncing ideas around a lunch table (or where ever the conversation took place).

  • Most non-PDP Psychics tend to have one area in which they are strong. They also may have one or two knacks that combine their primary Psi ability with several secondary which they usually only use as part of the knack... but could theorectically develop into moderately useful psychic abilities on their own. Usually, a mutant Psychic is vastly stronger in their area of strength than any baseline Psi... but they don't tend to show any great strength in other areas even though many have at least some ability to train across the boundaries of the Arts as a whole. An Empath, for instance, will only rarely also end up being a strong Telekinetic... though they may be strong enough to nudge dice. A PDP on the other hand, gives access to three 'mutant strength' psychic abilities... just limited in only one of them being usable at a time.

  • Actually, we have a couple examples of what Kristin is saying from "The Big Idea" itself:
    1. Migraine, who started out as a projective empath only able to cause headaches and broke out into a full PDP;
    2. Ace, who went from psychometrist to clairvoyant.

  • Can Bek write more stuff for Harley HarlanReach?

I realize I'm probably being greedy because I also want them to write more Silver Ghost, but can you fault me for wanting to see more of my favourite characters?

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

  • It depends on Bek's notoriously ADD-suffering muse...
Reach has been hired by Ayla to investigate something (I forget what). I think that at the time this came out there was some speculation regarding Bek writing that particular tale.

Regarding open stories we can blame Bek's muse for: there's also Loose Cannons, and more recently Jadis & Vamp Drow-herding in NY.

  • Did Kaiju have a crush on Ace?? I never got that impression... Am I missing something?

'Cause after Ace and A-Plus's LoveConfession by Proxy:

Both Ace and A-Plus blushed beet red. “But … Semi …” Ace hissed. “What about KAIJU?”

“Mister Bond, Welcome to High School!”

Harlan shrugged. "Well, I suppose it couldn't hurt... "

Without her realizing it, Kaiju's tail started wagging. "Could you make sure that it's Ace?" The gleam in her eyes was a full-fledged sparkle.

How could you miss that? Or the interrogation?

Two of my favorite exchanges/quotes in this story are referencing it :

“What’s that ‘Ace’ fool doing?” Adalie asked.

“Oh, he’s just covering the other side of the question at hand. Romy, I understand that you’ve witnessed Delta Spike questioning-”

“WHY is her tail doing that?” Adalie ignored him.

“Well, I understand that she tends to display her emotions with it, rather like a cat,” Harlan hedged. “She may be coping with the stress of being questioned that way.”

    “Why is she WAGGING it?”

“Ace must really be getting to her,” Harlan said, stifling a smirk. “ANYWAY, Romy- Romy?” Romy wasn’t paying any attention to him. Rather, she was watching Ace and Kaiju closely, with rather the same sharp intensity that A-Plus was. “ROMY? MIGRAINE?” Harlan said, trying to get her attention.

“Oh?” Romy snapped back to the present. “What was it, A- er, Harley?”

‘Score another one for the Exemplar boy with the rippling muscles, male model features, and bad-boy act,’ Harlan silently grumped to himself.

A gleam came to Kaiju’s eye. “Well, I was thinking … If I’m supposed to be a suspect, shouldn’t someone, you know … interrogate me?”

Harlan shrugged. “Well, I suppose it couldn’t hurt…”

Without her realizing it, Kaiju’s tail started wagging. “Could you make sure that it’s Ace?” The gleam in her eyes was a full-fledged sparkle.

Harlan couldn’t help but reflect on all those ‘teenage’ dramas and comedies. He noted that the plain, chubby, awkward, shy and/or nerdy girls who decried the superficial obsession with physical attractiveness never wanted the plain, chubby, awkward, shy and/or nerdy boys to see past their appearances and see the beauty underneath. NO, the plain, chubby, awkward, shy and/or nerdy girls always wanted the cute, buff, athletic, outgoing and/or cool boys to see past their appearances and see the beauty underneath.

  • Yeah, those are pretty nice quotes! :)

... And, yeah, "interrogate" only appears once, and "interrogated" only twice...

But, I needed the wagging to confirm the crush for the Wiki... *shrugs*

Wait... Why does Adalie care what Kaiju's reactions are? ... How many girls have a crush on Ace??

  • Well... take any heterosexual teenage girl. Supercharge hormones even beyond normal teenage norms. Add a lack of boyfriend. Put an Exemplar boy in front of her. She is going to be interested.
It's not like Adalie is particularly focused on Ace, but at this point, her teenage lusts will zero on any cute boy in front of her. And, in Adalie's case, many cute girls too, since she's clearly not a 0 on the Kinsey scale -- at least an 1, but probably 2 or even higher.
