  • Only minor and understandable angst! Is this really Elrods character? ;)
So H1! Is alive and well, and making people's lives miserable. I wonder how this will affect the poor girl and will she have anything to do with her father and brother?

  • We know she is a gadgeteer/devisor combo from the G2 announcement page. But what other abilities might she have, was her transformation due to being an Exemplar or something else?
And Domo, it is a collaborative story designed to get the new kids to Whateley. I'm sure once it is just Elrod or Elrod and E.E. working together again the poor girl will have plenty to angst over. :P

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • And this is the last of my three most anticipated characters. Loved what I've seen so far. She gets bonus points for her first friend being my most anticipated character (the bias is REAL). Can't wait to see where things go from here. I am very curious what kind of gadgets/devises we will be seeing from her...

  • Gasping for breath through her blue lips, flushed with blood as her passion surged through her, the girl lay back on her bed, her perfectly-shaped round blue fleshy mounds on her chest heaving, capped with large, erect, purplish nipples, trying to ignore wave after wave of pleasure that coursed through her, crashing her on the shoals of orgasm after orgasm. "Oh, God, YES!!" she screamed, her hands clutching the hair of her lover, desperate to continue the tender and erotic ministration of her lover's tongue in her sensitive, passion-soaked nether regions. "Yes, yes, yes!!" she cried, over and over, so enthralled by her primal lust that she wasn't thinking about the walls, or the fact that the girls on either side of her room were getting an earful of an x-rated soundtrack of the girl's first real experience with her sex....

Wuh? ... So cruel! ... Can you experience accurate dream sex if you've never had real sex? Dream-space sex counts as real sex...

If no, then at least she had sex already? ... Is "At least" even the right phrase?

How would you know if "Dream Sex" is accurate or innaccurate if you've never had real sex?

You want awkward? Try being a dad of a teen girl who's curious but knows her mom will give her Puritan answers and not the straight scoop.

I'd reply, by my overactive imagination came up with a scene and it's just not right to make a father think of that and their daughter.

And no I won't post it, those who want to know can look up the micro-scenes thread and what happened last time Domoviye encouraged me to post something I thought I shouldn't.

  • I'm just waiting about oh, 5 to 8 years for that.
The mother isn't puritan, but she has some seriously messed up ideas about how much it sucks to be a woman. this is why I know so much about female periods, pelvic exams and other problems for teen girls. I'm getting my ducks lined up early.

    Try being the step dad!

(That particular conversation was about her having a mis-carriage, at a time she was refusing to speak to her mother and knew far better than to speak to her father)

  • Since I'm kind of guilty for getting off topic (like others), let me categorically say the following:

Laura / Cerulea does NOT snore.
She MIGHT moan, however, at certain times :)

    Is it Kenshin, perhaps?

Nah, she seems to not be comfortable enough with being a girl yet to even date a boy. *focuses empath-receptive power on elrod and other writers to try and gauge response* I'm guessing Tanya/Invictus is more likely, as they have already emotionally connected.

Nah, she seems to not be comfortable enough with being a girl yet to even date a boy. *focuses empath-receptive power on elrod and other writers to try and gauge response* I'm guessing Tanya/Invictus is more likely, as they have already emotionally connected.

  • Posted after reading Calamari Part 2

    Observations:
    - The interaction with Taka during the fight... if you saw what I posted on the full story discussion thread, you know that Laura's behavior kind of threw me for a loop... it was not what I was expecting... was it by chance a minor flare up of Drick's?...
    - the nervousness on the bus, what with the fear of smudging the make-up and all, was really endearing... and made the above observation all the more jarring...
    - In the hotel room scene... more confusing bits... even with the whole changeling issue, Laura seems to be a very caring person sensitive to Tanya's emotions... which again doesn't jive with the fight scene, at least not to me...

    - PLEASE tell me it was a Drick's flare up....

  • She's not going to Drick out. There are serious HINTS about her in those scenes. Can't say more because merely pointing out the focus area would give it all away. And the fight arguing in part 2 leads into a scerne in part 3 that I hope is found funny; I liked it anyway. And there's a setup long-term for 3 characters in all that mess.

With me, usually I'm fairly laid back and easy going, but if there's an emergency I become very calculating and decisive to the point of ordering people around like I'm their boss. I see her doing the same thing.

  • elrodw wrote: Now, so far, I'm very surprised by the lack of, um, reaction to how Kenshin and Laura interacted during the fight, I'm also a bit surprised that no-one has picked up on or commented on Laura's interactions with the other girls, both in the room and in the drugstore. It WAS a lot of hint about herself I put in.....

Uhm, pretty sure I talked about their interactions and how Laura responded to the other girls in my big comments posts.

Poor Laura, having to hide behind a layer of make-up and nervous about anything which could smudge it. It was going to come out sooner or later to the other girls. Afraid to even shake hands due to her make-up smudging, she needs help adjusting or she will become afraid of the slightest human contact with time.

Felt like she shies away from human contact out of fear of her secret being exposed, of others seeing her as a freak, especially after how her brothers and dad treated her. Having to be trained in martial arts since 8 at the insistence of her mother just to keep from being beat up by her own brothers even before manifesting, what messed up brothers.

. Ouch, mention of going home, poor Laura. Nice way they worked together to come up with her codename, glad not every contact risk smudging her make-up.

The home situation, with living with her mom and sister now due to how her dad and brothers reacted to her manifesting. Beating him up before he manifested, imagine how they reacted once he became a blue-skinned she. Father is probably H1 or worse.

How Laura reacted at first upon seeing Morgana transform is believable and understandable, most people don't know how to react upon seeing someone transform in such a way.

Laura has never dealt with someone who doesn't speak English, she is getting infuriated at Kenshin's lack of knowledge about American culture, and it made her off-guard.

She seems to get frustrated easily when others don't get things easily or confuse things, either a part of her personality or side-effect of gadgeteer/devisor traits. Dropping the one part back into her purse due to the thug shows she has a temper for when her creations are messed with in any way. And although she is upset at Kenshin for intervening, with the missing piece of her devise it might have not worked properly and done something she would have regretted.

Laura, he is a stranger in a strange land, your sarcasm isn't helping any. I know she probably has her old male attitude still of not needing another guys help and is infuriated thinking that Kenshin saw her as a damsel in distress but ease up on the guy.

She responds with sarcasm when frustrated, probably as part of a defense mechanism. As stated she seems to have her old male attitude of not needing another guys help, believing Kenshin sees her as a damsel in distress to rescue, which infuriates her as she still believes she can do everything on her own.

Laura shows she has the guy and Kenshin tell her truthfully he doesn't get sarcasm, breaks her device while "protecting her" when she has shown she doesn't need it, if he keeps up this behavior of treating her like a helpless girl she might hurt him herself.

Kenshin keeps reacting to protect her instead of even giving her a chance to do so herself, seeing himself as a samurai following the code of Bushido. Only to tick her off by breaking her devise after she has shown she doesn't need his protection. Treating her like a helpless girl that further angers Laura to the point I get the impression if he kept it up she would hurt Kenshin herself to get the point across she isn't helpless.

I can see a lot of future arguments between Laura and Kenshin, unless he learns to treat her like a fellow human instead of a helpless girl. And finally Kenshin sees that Laura can handle herself, better remember that for the future or suffer.

It took Kenshin seeing Laura knock out one of the minions with a strong kick on her own to convince him she can take care of herself. I know he follows the code of Bushido but not listening until proven wrong seems more than a bit arrogant on his part. Which if he does so in the future to Laura again she will take her frustration out on. Treating her like she can't take care of herself seems to be a huge trigger button for her anger.

Laura needs to learn to control her temper although Kenshin attitude and lack of ability to speak English fluently didn't help.

Laura needs to learn to combine her gadgets, devises and martial arts training into how she fights, instead of barely using it and only when faced with an up close threat. Maybe a devise melee weapon she could training or devise gauntlets that work with her martial arts training.

Lillian has no idea of what any of them went through, still she wouldn't take any of it as an excuse to argue on the battlefield. But Laura's remaining male attitude grated against Kenshin's Bushido and apparent attitude to her of treating her like helpless girl to be rescued. Considering all that, Laura restrained herself fairly well by not clocking Kenshin upside the head one to get her point across she didn't need help.

And I would love to see a gadgeteer/devisor combine it with martial arts training as stated above. Force-field belt combined with a gadget or devise melee weapon would be incredible together.

Hehehe, we get to see Laura's pervert side, wishing to see Morgana fight naked.

It is obvious from her ogling of Morgana she is a former teenage boy and still attracted to girls, now she has the chance to check them out without worry and will do so every chance she gets.

Ouch, Laura, I hope you are exaggerating about that or your mom was cruel to you even before you transformed, saying your singing was that bad. I won't believe she is that bad until she sings in story and it is described for us.

I seriously hope her comment about her mom not letting her sing unless it was to evacuate a building are self-deprecating humor. Since she is staying with her mom and sister and loves them, that seems to be the case.

And poor Laura, not being able to shower until she gets to school, hope they can get her more make-up soon.

Wonder how soon she can have the neural inhibitor back up and running again. And as I thought, she was annoyed at him trying to play the gallant hero. Laura seems to not like hearing others in pain when she can help other, or the use of the wrong technique with the brush to get the tangles out infuriated her. Laura, just ask her and rip off that band aid already, ask if Morgana was a boy before. It is going to bug you until you find out.

Her fear of being seen as a freak by others holds her back, even from those who have become her friends. And as stated, she saw Kenshin as trying to be the gallant hero and rescue a fair maiden, something her remaining male mentally can't tolerate. Not sure if she can't stand hearing Morgana wince in pain, or if she just feels compelled to help out as she knows she can do a better job. Almost sounded like she was doing it because it reminds her of her little sister and the time they spent together. And Laura is so afraid of being found out she is a changeling, she doesn't wish to risk asking others if they are as well. The fear of how they might react holds her back. And she doesn't wish to lose a new friend.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • On the afraid to show her skin issue, that won't be so much of a problem once she starts attending Whateley, given it's highly likely the spray-on skin formulation Greasy developed back in G1 will be commercially available in the campus store, while there's also likely to be numerous alternative products to achieve the same effect (probably lighter and easier to use than the skin pours Jinn used back in G1). Heck, get friendly with a sufficiently powerful mage and she could probably buy an amulet which creates the illusion of flesh-toned skin.

There's likely to be AJG catalogs right next to Giztastic catalogs too if the rate at which Ayla has been bringing devisers and gadgeteers into her employ in Gen 1 is anything to go by, plus Harry Wolfe as the secret to getting adamanti costs down to 5% compared to the standard cost

  • Actually, Harry's abilities don't mean that adamantium will drop 95% in price -- it only means that Harry can make as much money as 20 adamantium specialists. More, in fact, considering that he wastes less (expensive) supplies. Harry by himself won't increase the supply of adamantium to the point that demand pressures lessen significantly.

The only way Harry might affect the price of adamantium is if he figures a better industrial process for making it, one that does not depend on his personal touch.

  • I'm talking about production cost, also seeing how Harry is not a deviser and the 60% success rate was on his first try I see no reason why he wouldn't be on his way to developing the "Wolfe process " for the manufacture of adamanti

  • He's not a devisor, sure; but making adamantium is supposed to be a very finicky process, more art than science. He is not imposing his own reality over the process, but he is using his heightened perception as it concerns technological things to compensate on-the-fly for small perturbations.

To put it another way:think of haute cuisine. It's not something that lends itself well to industrialization -- you need a chef's hand to make the difference. Adamantium is like a dish that's so finicky that even the best chefs only get it right one time in twenty. Harry is an exceptionally gifted chef.

As for production cost, yes, it is quite lower for Harry than for anybody else in the business. But why would he sell for a lower price, if the market can absorb anything he produces even at the current (high) market prices? So, the lower production cost only makes a difference for one person -- Harry Wolfe.

  • he doesn't have to sell for a significantly lower price, think about it from a business standpoint, even if he never does industrialize the process, he is working with a specialty material, for specialty products, he needs to market his goods, now who does he know whom has he capability to get is work out there?

You want a clue about that? Look for a science-fiction story I wrote many moons ago. It's on Big Closet.

I know I need to pin down the G2 authors for links to their non-whateley stuff at some point, and I've had you and Morpheus on my 'read all the things' list long before either of you mentioned that you wanted to write Whateley stuff. In my opinion, Progenitors is my best sci-fi work, followed by Flashbacks.
A mission to explore Callisto finds peculiar gem-like samples on the surface - and then strange things begin happening to the ship and to one of the crew members. They've inadvertently stumbled onto an ancient, dead race's desperate attempt to preserve their culture and race - through extraordinary means.

And yes, the Lakari (the alien race) are blue-skinned with sapphire-blue hair and eyes - like Laura.
My 'good' stuff is on Big Closet. I have a few early - and not-so-good - stories on FM as well.

Yes, it'll be delicious, won't it?

I have fun stuff planned for Laura.
Oh, don't worry - it's nothing like what I did to Kayda. Just ... mostly misunderstandings and other such fun stuff.

Then we get to year 2

    I like Laura.
She has a lot of problems, but she's able to find joy and happiness in simple things, which makes her seem sweet and hopeful. Why must you torture her?

Laura doesn't get tortured in Gen2. Elrod is cuddly and lovable to her. Hey, she isn't even down for Extreme Home Ec.
Her main problem so far is Morgana banging on the wall yelling at her to keep the noise down...:D

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

Well, I'm a lot nastier to Morgana than Elrod is to Laura.

You'll have to take all our words for it - I'm being nice to Laura. Even the 'big events' that I have planned, while they're a bit (a LITTLE BIT) scary for her, have a big upside.

WRT Laura, I'm being a cuddly teddy bear.:) :) :)

I do! It's just that I was delayed before I got a chance to read it.

Actually I'm less interested in Laura at the moment (although I am looking forward to seeing more of her), and more interested in the Men in Black following her. On the one hand, they seem to care about her well-being. On the other hand, they're definitely throwing off vibes from the evil end of the secret agent spectrum.

The thought of a big organization or group of do-gooders deciding what is the bet for a person, fills me with dread. Much like seeing my five yeara old daughter reaching for a sharp knife, a hot pan, or a power tool and saying, "Daddy I'll help." Except that my daughter will generally do much less damage than the do-gooders.

Ignore Mage on this point. Technically speaking, there are several of our characters that are rather less "targeted" than Cerulea, even if others are actually more so.

(Note that I said ignore him on THIS POINT. He's a bit off here, but usually he's spot on.)

I never said that nothing bad would happen to her. Only that she's a lot less of a chew toy than Kayda was and Danny is going to be

  • In counseling at this point or in counseling ever, because as we've seen, attending Whateley can be traumatic, and just because Laura isn't in counseling now doesn't mean she will never need it.

Well if you're talking about FUTURE counseling, you better watch out. There will be plenty of that for pretty much ALL of our characters. Kenshin might be the only exception. He's just that unflappable. :-p

  • Okay, so she's not in counseling yet, but might be after that she finds leftovers from 'Shine's still, gets a little hammered, devises some Borg nanites, and accidentally infects half of the lab crew, turning it into one giant collective unfortunately ruled by the son of a failed supervillain who vowed revenge on all his father's enemies, and now has an invincible and growing army of semi-invincible, technically-brilliant Borg clones.

But she's not in counseling out of guilt at having unleashed a devisor/gadgeteer Borg collective. No, she's there because her romantic interest was assimilated and is lost to her.

What are you on? Teenaged girl loses boyfriend and goes to counselling?!

No! She does something stupid land dives in full ahead after him and tries to get infected to be with him forever ... She's in counselling because the Borg threw her back out as defective, and all ninites in her system where ordered to self-destruct for the greater good of the collective.

    No way.
She dives in, but her powers stop her from being assimilated fully. She's rejected, but she has just enough of the nanites in her to turn her into a hideous cybernetic freak. Even worse she's mindlinked to the collective. Whenever it feels an intense emotion she can see through its eyes and feel through its skin. It only feels intense emotions when hurting and killing people. So she gets flashes of death and torture, she knows its real, she knows its happening right now, and it might as well be her doing it.

She has to go on a chase across the country to stop it, ultimately being forced to kill her boyfriend with her barehands.

HEY! I can be nice to a character without the world ending! So far, nothing bad has happened to Julie or 'Shine. Knockoff would have been okay if she hadn't been helping her mother. Danny has mostly been teased; he hasn't been tortured or nearly killed!

So I want to be nice to Laura - is that a crime?

I swear, it is NOT a sign of an impending apocalypse.

Wow... those ARE some good pills... you may want to talk to your doctor about being over-medicated.

Yet! Foul minds want to know. ;) :silly:

Well you ARE known for taking Whateley into darker places and you do it very well, though I do think I know may have a clue WHY you supposedly aren't doing that for Laura come to think of it, if I'm right its so one or more of the other G2 authors can demonstrate their wide "brightness" range. If I am right, Vic has quite a ride ahead....

Because being run out of your home, teleporting out of your clothes, and being kidnapped by elves is not bad.

It could be worse. ... How much does Julie actually know about what Kayda's gone through? ... Actually, even Kayda doesn't really know what she herself has gone though, given all the plots and stuff swirling around her...

  • So now we know more about Laura, and I hope you all realize that nothing BAD happened to Laura. She's finding life at Whateley ... interesting! Very interesting.

    And it's only begun.

Oh, there will be misunderstandings, and a hidden plot, but they aren't visible to spoil her happiness and make her all angsty.

  • Now you guys cut that out, elrod can be nice to his characters without it being a plot to mess them up later. Sometimes you like to be nice to one of your creations, plus elrod likes blue characters, why would he be mean to Laura.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

Wow, someone else read this book?

With all the Diskworld books, this one sort of seems to sit there, neither acknowledged again nor disavowed, but rather like they hope people would forget it.

  • Well, it's not really a Discworld book, per se. It's kind of embryonic Discworld. But the quote I just quoted is in my top 10 favorite quotes of all time.

And it's easier to find now, but when I first wanted to quote it (several years ago) but couldn't remember the exact text, it was nearly impossible to find the text, despite it being a great quote.

Lol ... "Embryonic" ... considering the book is about building a Diskworld ... :)

But you're right, it's not precisely a Diskworld novel, more the one where Pratchard went "you know, I wonder what people living on such a wired world would be like?" And the rest, as they say, is history.

  • Has anyone mentioned Buttercup?

girl sitting next to the window... was yellow, from her hair, to her skin, to her eyes. Even her dress was yellow. Despite that, there wasn't really anything unusual about her, yet I couldn't look away.

Oh, that's Heyoka 3, which was a teaser... And isn't migrated here?

  • I've been rereading some of the G2 stuff and I've got a question for Elrod about Laura.

Have you ever read the Yoko Tsuno graphic novels? I'm particularly thinking about Khany and the vineans due to their skin tone being very similar to Laura.

Well, I have raised the issue in the past of what to do with teasers posted on the old forums by long-gone authors... they pose an annoying problem, because some of them establish important universe elements, but they weren't ever officially released. And now that the old forums are gone, they aren't available anymore.

    For instance:
    - Heyoka 3 shows a Survival class
    - Fey: Learning Curve establishes important magical principles
    - Wild Times is the (incomplete) origin story for Feral, and establishes the New Olympians.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • If her family was specifically targeted by Vanguard because of her father's views on mutants and connections to H1, why did Laura survive while the more recent experiments have failed?

    Most likely luck.
The conversation that decided on Laura probably went like this:

Evil Person 1: What about this kid? We can give him a dose on his way home from school easy.

Evil Person 2: Why do you want him?

Evil Person 1: His father is a big H1 member and has a chain of restaurants, if the kid lives but the experiment fails we gain some important test data. If the kid dies, we punish H1. If the experiment works, we get to fuck with his father and can keep testing the kid. Win win anyway you look at it.

She has two twin brothers (older, dad's favorites, picked on Larry a LOT) and one younger sister, whose Barbie (TM) car and house were "devised" after Larry manifested - RC for the car, electronic light and sound effects for the car, and so on.

  • I'd say the problem is you were obviously either too obvious or too subtle.

Either everything we got was just confirmation of things we already kind of were positive about

    or

We missed whatever you were planning for us to notice that specifically related to Laura, possibly because you distracted us with tidbits about Fullerton, somebody who lost their spirit who was with people who might match descriptions for certain Gen 1 characters, and a few things about the Doctor Lady who might be working with Vanguard... which were already covered in other threads?
