  • I can't edit my posts, 'cause of an Permissions issue? ... EDIT: The option disappeared from the drop-down menu.

Making this "New topic" showed my edit attempt's info.

... I assume bugs due to site update attempt? And also that fixes are already underway or something.

Hope things go well, admins / Kirstin!

    EDITS:

And now I can edit [this]... ... Thanks! :)

Uh... And only this? I posted this , accidentally. Then it showed the edit option in the drop-down for that post only, but trying to edit got the following, same as my previous attempt:

I can edit my last post added to If I Had A Hammer , a topic that I started. No edit option for my posts in The Misfits - Discussion

Maybe once someone has replied to the thread (or maybe replied to the post), the content is set to reply/quote only to prevent shenanigans? It may have been this way for some time now, and I'm just noticing in response to the above post.

  • Ugh. Keep accidentally quote-self posting.

And yeah. Can't edit my OP. So, your guess makes sense, Null.

  • It appears that only your last post can be edited now. Or perhaps within a certain time.

  • It appears that you can only edit your last post on any given thread. You can edit all your last posts on all the threads that you are posting to, at least it seems so to me. I'm not sure I like that, also, not sure it is a good idea, after all for example I have been posting a story in chapter sized bites, so what happens if I need to change something in the first chapter bite I posted? Can I only do that until I post the second? What if I need to change something in a year?
Edit: it appears to me that you can edit your last post until some one replies to the thread. Still not very happy about the only edit until reply function. Like I said, I have minor pieces of corrections/proofing that I've done on Nowhereville parts including the first part. But now they are locked as posted currently.

  • The action may be due to 'preserve' what had originally been posted so that a person could not 'alter' their previous post thus making it a part of history if ever needed to be looked back upon. No snipping of what you said and later regretted.

Think of it this way. If Nixon were to say have posted his tapes online in transcript and later didn't want to show those missing minutes he could have just gone back and edited them out thus leaving many parts confusing, misleading or gone. You can't delete the thread but you wipe out what was there unless someone had copied the original an posted in 'their' msg thus preserving the original.

This is what trapped Nixon on several points as with other acts.

But yes it does leave a bit to those that wanted to go back and correct legitimately, errors, lost train of thought and so forth.

What is - was. What was - is.

  • I do not know what caused this, it certainly isn't intentional. Any location in which you have the ability to post, you should also have the ability to edit your own post. If you don't have the ability to edit, you probably also shouldn't be able to post in that section. The only place I tried to get 'fancy' with configuration would be the Fab Lab, which should only allow the thread creator to post or edit in that thread. No one else should be able to generate reply posts. Or at least, I intended to set it up that way... I don't remember if I actually did or not.

I haven't changed the permissions on forums sections (except one and it applies to almost no one) for over a year and its been two weeks or so since the last forums code update. So... I'm not sure what to tell you. I'll look into it.

  • It doesn't appear so. I just tried to edit an earlier post of mine in this thread and still can't get the edit option.

  • What about in a non-support thread ... like something in the Quad? Trying to work out if its a matter of different permissions / set up in categories.

  • I looked in several threads, this one, one in the quad, one in the fab lab, and a couple of others, if the thread, or topic has been replied to (whether or not my post was answered) it locks the edit option out.

  • hmm... i know what i'd look for in the code if i were altering code to fix things. but i can't think of a place in admin settings that would make this possible. i'll have to check in with the forums support site and see if they did something that changed this and if its on a patch cycle. I've been through all the diagnostics for the forums and double checked the various settings and turned up nothing.

  • Thank you for your efforts. The only place it seems to me that it matters a lot is in the fabrication lab any way, as that is where you have an ongoing effort in writing posted. The main reason it matters there is that a story can undergo serious evolution as it is written and posted, so if you post the parts separately, likely with a multipart story, then you lock the earlier parts when you post the next part. And just for example, Nowhereville , is now in my file quite different in the first chapter.

  • One thing you could consider: Once the story is complete, pull together the text and revisions for publishing through the content management system as Independent Fiction. The editing software has its quirks (like creative handling of pasted text that requires symbols or extended alphabets), but the main restriction on editing is that you have to save your work every few minutes before the session times out.

There is also the advantage that those stories/chapters are read by many more people who wouldn't try to find a story in a discussion forum. For example, the six parts of "Into the Light" range roughly from 900 to 1350 hits.

  • You can be sure that I will be doing that (moving the whole thing over to WhatIF) as soon as I have a reasonably complete story. I expect if I format it like I have for the forum I'll have no problem copying and pasting the pieces? I'll cross that bridge when I get to it or start looking for a ford...:roflmao:

  • If you are transferring from forums to CMS, the most efficient way I can think of would be to pull up the forums page in "Inspect Source" and find the text of the page that includes your story. Forums posts themselves use BBC (bulletin board code) but in the site generated forums page, everything is converted to display in html... which means all your font sizing, bolds, italics, and so on will be intact using the html version of things... the only thing that you'd want to change to follow our 'ideal' encoding is that forums posts use 'soft line returns'. That means if you follow the normal empty line between paragraphs, when you inspect the code you'll see a line break < br > at the end of your paragraph and a second one on the empty line before the next paragraph. You can just do a find/replace run to put in
    < /p >

    < p >
in their place. and then just replace the couple lone < br > at the beginning of sections with a < p > ... that's a VERY quick transition compared to some other transfers (like from Word into the CMS).

  • I won't be transferring from forum, but from my file on my computer that has changed quite a bit from what is posted to the forum, if or when I get to the point that I'm ready to post to the WhatIF requesting feedback section. Then I expect there will be another learning curve to get things to look right. But I did a lot of the html in my WP document so... Maybe not as big a chore as it might otherwise be.

  • You can always hit up one of the staff for a hand too. Dan, Phoenix and I do a lot of document to CMS conversions and we each have our routines that let us do it without it being insane.
