  • Whisper 20-25 has gone completely AWOL from the Original Cannon List - Gap is between 13-19 & 26-30.

Was able to find it through the Suggested Story Sequence so it's there, just missing from the cannon list

  • How are you finding a cannon list that it's missing from?

I found it going through the first gen stories, so I have no idea what they mean.

I did a quick look and Whisper is in the right category, so it should be showing up in the "Original Canon" storied list.

Any chance of some more details about where your looking for it and not finding it?

  • This same concern was posted in the Comments on the Front Page and I answered it there as follows:

Original Cannon list is missing chapter 20-25 of Whisper -

    Hmm... no... it's there.

Click on the main menu STORIES button.
Click on the left sidebar menu ORIGINAL TIMELINES button.
Above the upper left corner of the table with the stories in it, there is a text box that is labeled author filter. Find that.
Type in "Slee" ... the first part of Sleethr's name, in that box. hit enter.
You should now see the full list of the Whisper story parts available. If you still don't see it, PM me.

Please avoid duplicating posting questions in multiple locations. Especially if you aren't going to look for the responses that you get.

And just as an aside... its CANON. A cannon is a large metal cylinder used as a gunpower driven weapon for several centuries... ending the age of castles as viable military strongpoints.

Strong argument in favor of the story not being 'lost' somewhere... it has some 3800 hits...

  • It also shows up if you go through page by page instead of filtering by name, or at least it did for me. (I was thinking maybe it was a bug in the pagination code, but nope. Worked fine.)

  • *nods* My original thought was just that its publish date had been entered wrong and so it was being listed somewhere out of order. But it wasn't that. Then i checked the link from the WIKI, and it wasn't that. So, I'm not sure what the reader is seeing... but they're not going at it from any of the designed means of finding the stories. *shrugs*

  • I actually ran across this problem myself, or a similar one. I was trying to open up "A pocketful of Tansy" and i got an error saying the story had been moved or didn't exist. It came back when I refreshed the page I was getting the link from (original timeline, page 4, by publication date), but still, it was temporarily gone. Maybe that's what he saw happen. Whisper 20-25 is on the same page, so maybe?

  • That's why my first response to fturtle was to ask how they'd called up the list... if I tried it the same way and the story was there then we could investigate whether there was an issue with the site.

  • I've been trying to Google for stories, and those links don't work... nor do the Wiki links, but hey, new URLs for stories, so I guess the links will propagate in time, and stuff.

And that I should be using the in-site search, to well... search.

  • Uh... I don't have any problems using WIKI links to get to stories. And I got a couple of specific stories and references to come up using google... so, I'm not sure what it is you're talking about Malady. This is another good example of "if you actually want help, you NEED to be specific." Ambiguity makes me spend half an hour checking potentially obvious problems without being able to reproduce the problem and that pisses me off... and wastes my time. Which also pisses me off.

  • Step by step for this one error:

Hit Stories on the top bar
Hit Search on the side bar
    Type "Book of Jobe"
    Click blue search button
Click any of the five "The Book of Jobe" stories on the list that appears
    You will get an error:

An error has occurred while processing your request.

You may not be able to visit this page because of:
    an out-of-date bookmark/favourite
    a mistyped address
a search engine that has an out-of-date listing for this site
you have no access to this page

But the stories do exist if you pull them off the author search by looking for Babs and those links work fine.

The title search feature sends back (dead link):
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/component/content/9-original-canon/333-the-second-book-of-jobe-part-1?Itemid=156
While the author filter on the story lists has (working link):
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/original-timeline/333-the-second-book-of-jobe-part-1

  • Kattsun: Codeblock the urls 'cause they're dead atm...

    The Wiki for Jade 4

    Gets me:
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/content-menu/stories/145-jade-4-bottle-a-jinn

    Which gives:

404: Flexi_requested_content or data not found

    Googling "bottle a jinn jade"

    Gets me:
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/stories/145-jade-4-bottle-a-jinn

    Which gives:

404: Content category no.145. was not found or is not published.

  • OK, if you post a mention when you find a broken link in the Wiki, we can fix it. I'm looking at the "bottle a jinn" issue right now.

By the way, kattsun...what blue search button were you talking about? The "go" button on the Search box looks orange to me. And, for some reason, is located out of the sidebar boundaries. (I thought it was a Firefox problem, but it looks if anything slightly worse in Chrome).

  • I think I figured out the problem, from the Wiki side (and possibly from the Google side): the URLs for the stories changed in one of the site overhauls.
They used to be like this:
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/content-menu/stories/145-jade-4-bottle-a-jinn
And now they are like this:
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/content_page/9-original-canon/145-jade-4-bottle-a-jinn

(However, links in the alternate format:
    http://whateleyacademy.net/index.php/original-timeline/145-jade-4-bottle-a-jinn
    still work for some reason)

This is a tractable problem for the most part -- I can use a bot to replace the changed part of the string in the relevant pages, sorta wholesale. But a few might get missed, if for some reason they don't match either the old or the new structure exactly. Library links in author pages probably will have to be hand-edited too.

I might have to have a second pass at the Gen2 and Gen0 stories, since they by definition aren't "original timeline" and so the new links will likely to be broken.

As for Google, give it time and the spider will find the new addresses, particularly after I update the Wiki.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • OK, I had a pass with the 'bot. Most, if not all, links from the wiki to the stories should be working now. If they aren't, please tell me.

  • Ah, yes, I hadn't gone that way. I tried the search box on the right sidebar (orange button), and then the collapsible "Search" on top of the Stories page (green button). I guess there are a lot of different ways to search the site...

  • Ah Kristin setup a new plugin that is offering us some real benefits with publishing stories and other things around the site, it's possible nearly all the links in the Wiki broke, and Google will need to reindex the site too.

I think Kristin has warned about this over and over again, the CMS we use changes it's links each time we do anything to the stories, external links are very fragile to this site.

  • More specifically, there is no such thing as a 'story page'. The stories are just data in a database that is only loaded on demand via site specific components/modules. So there really isn't anything there for Google to 'find'...

And that's why some old links might not work... the components those links used to call for the data in the database to create a page that would have the story in it are no longer authorized by the system to call for the story data... or the data has been re-indexed in a way that makes it inaccessible.

Now... the site specific search tool 'should' in theory be working. So when I have a chance, I'll look at it and see if I can figure out why it is giving you messages that it cannot find something.

As to the Go button on the upper right sidebar search panel - sadly, that's dependent on how large your sidebar widths are. The search text box itself wasn't designed to be responsive and if you get a sidebar smaller than it, it just overlaps. Only thing I can do to 'fix' that is put it somewhere that is always side enough that it won't spill over.
