  • Apologies if this has been asked / answered before, but is there anywhere on the site we can find out more about the various pieces of artwork which appear in the left sidebar (under the Forum/Messages/Sponsors etc. menu and ad, before Have You Read)? Other than prior knowledge or right clicking to find out more info from the filename, there doesn't appear to be anything obvious to say who's depicted in the artwork (not always immediately obvious - e.g. I haven't yet twigged which character the numerous "Karen" pics are of), who it's by, and what else they've drawn...

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

  • It's under WA Universe... whateleyacademy.net/index.php/art-gallery-menu

I'd say that Community should be renamed to Forums? I thought it'd be under there? ... Or give Wiki and Art their own big tabs?? *shrugs*

Some of the art is for fan characters. ... Now... What was Karen's story called?? Mm... Ah. Evershade! Well, it's in the FabLab. Not sure if it went full WhatIF...

No, wait, I troped it, so it must have: Evershade: Reforming .

  • News - points you to the most recent information available about the site and updates, the Front Page News.
Stories - points you at the collections of stories.
Community - points you at anything that enables you to engage the community - forums, PMs, shoutbox, links to other sites and sponsors of this one.
WA Universe - is anything that shows off the universe that isn't directly a story. Art, backstory, history, etc.
Authors - tools specifically for creating stories
Admin - tools for the administrators to handle behind the scenes stuff.

It's fairly logical... and not all that extensive... I'm not sure why people have such a difficult time with it. I think everyone has just been spoiled by pull down menus.

  • Art doesn't feel like worldbuilding, I think is why.

Unless it's like the plaque or something, then it sorta is. Which should be removed from rotation? 'Cause it's so spoilery?

Are the Chou Lee pictures not part of the rotation for some reason? Maybe use that to figure out how to remove the plaque?

At least for me, Bladedancer is most certainly in the "rotation", so that's not it.

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

Oh. Yeah, the naming in the Gallery confirms that. I thought the fire was a bit weird.

  • Not without explicit permission from the authors.

And do y'all really, really want me to take down the pic of the memorial? The thing I worked so hard on in GIMP to get looking halfway reasonable? That labor of ... well, of curiosity to see if I could do it?

You could keep it on the story page like those Chou Cover Arts, it's just that it's a massive spoiler when it's out here where everyone can see it!

  • I think it should stay in the line up. It's not that big of a deal. I think others are making up stuff that doesn't matter to anyone but themselves.

  • Huh. I'd have thought any character death would be a pretty big spoiler, but if you guys don't think it is... *shrugs*

True, Sioux Falls isn't made of POV Characters, but they're sorta relevant to the Kayda stories... But, the manner of their deaths isn't revealed, and once you get to the story, some deaths are expected??

  • I don't think anybody wants you to take down the art, they just wonder if (given the spoilery nature) it should be in the sidebar rotation. Even then, it probably matters less now that the story isn't brand new.

  • Points well taken.
I guess I put it up because I was a little bit proud of it; it's my first real big GIMP project in a long time, and I can see I've still got it.

It's easy to take down - all I need is to take one little line out of the index text file, and it won't show up anymore, but it'll still be in the gallery and in the story.

Does the art in the Wiki have the same issue?

Sir Lee should probably answer this, but I think much of it was created for the wiki.

I'd assume not? We could at least ask dpragan for his permission. He's here...

@elrodw - Well, I'd like it if the gallery version was linked by a simple link that says "Spoilers for [story]" so people don't get inadvertentantly spoiled just by looking through the gallery, but it's better than nothing...

  • We might have slipped in one or two cases, but generally speaking, art in the Wiki was either uploaded by the author or the author was asked for permission. Even when the author is part of the TINCC, or the art was uploaded to the forums... because Wikia demands a sort of licensing that may be too broad for some authors' tastes.

  • It also means giving up some of your control over your art. A lot of artists will not allow their art to be included on Wikia because it makes it usable in future by anyone (as long as they attribute where they got it).

That is good to know. Actually, though, I was asking about whether the wiki art had the same issues about being added to the gallery.

  • (Argh - the disadvantages of home ownership - too many bits of maintenance conspiring to keep you away from your 'puter!)

Right, so that's the gallery found, together with more helpful descriptions of who or what they depict [1], but as far as I can tell, no indication of who the artists are (for the drawn pics, hopefully the photos are public domain [2]...)

[1] Is Kristen a big ferret fan, by any chance? :D I assume she uploaded the numerous ferret pics, given it's one of her characters that has a ferret VI...
[2] I had a brief stab at being an IT teacher - part of every course was attempting to convey proper attribution. (No, class, images dot google is not a source - click on to find where the actual image is, and if the uploader has given permission for reuse).

  • I do like ferrets, yes I do. But I only really bombarded the gallery with them because I needed a reasonable number of images to start from for testing and all I had handy at the time were my Tavi research images. The intent is to at some point pull all but one or two of those back out.

The gallery extension allows for including some information about each image but NOT any significant amount of structure/format to that text. The sidebar random art display doesn't allow for ANY such thing. The only way to really do a title/description/attribution and all that in a nice orderly fashion is to create a gallery of articles that are just a picture and an 'index card' with that info on it. We went with the way we are currently doing it simply because Elrod could get the images from people and put them in and put the basic text with them without me needing to be involved.

Now that we've changed some other things... the more detailed method may be possible to implement.

    Who's this?

    whateleyacademy.net/images/gallery/sketch3.jpg

She's not shown in the Art Gallery, but shows up in the sidebar rotation.

  • That's a picture Domoviye had done recently... It's not been added to the gallery yet since those two sets of photos are handled by the website differently and the gallery requires some manual input by us for the update.

  • Elrod is keeper of the gallery. But when Dom posted this the other day, I copied it up to the folder for the sidebar (which is automatic with anything placed in that folder). For it to appear on the Gallery page with a description, Elrod needs to add the name/text to a file.

TL;DR: it's Dom's character Teri in a non-canon scenario (she is not normally a puppet, nor human sized).

  • Just an FYI - I had helped organize the sidebar art and the captions for the regular Whateley art page - it's not that hard, but lately, after the surgery and flood, I'm way too fried mentally and physically to do much more than exist and try to get the house organized for rebuilding. If someone has art they want in (the artist or owner, not just any Joe Schlabotnik who likes it), if you let me know, I'll eventually get another batch done.

  • It was just the JPG that Dom linked last week, El. I copied it up to the Gallery folder, which adds it to the random rotation for the sidebar, but not to the Gallery page itself. Name of the file was 'sketch3.jpg' ... priority level of this getting done? pretty damn low. :-p

yep, that's why I linked it in the thread instead of pestering people about it. And I'm just calling it marionette.

  • If the image is in the sidebar directory, there's not much to make it active in the gallery - one just has to have an entry on an index file which has the file name, short description, and long description for that picture.
