  • For the last 6 months, I've been trying to avoid surgery for bone spurs and a partial rotator cuff tear in my left shoulder, but it's not improving. Cortisone shots and physical therapy haven't helped. So I'll be having surgery to repair the damage on the 27th of June, after a short trip with my daughter at the end of this week. For some time after, I'll be probably hampered and groggy on pain meds, so who knows how much I'll be around. While I'm on vacation, I have to do some work for an on-line class I'm taking, and then in my copious free time (HA!) I'll try to write a bunch to get ahead. So please wish me luck.

  • good luck, I hope all goes well... and remember pain meds and writing go well together.

I, myself, want to see what sort of stories occur when you are loopy from meds.

Epic stories about Kayda running naked across the plains yelling "I can hear the colors!", no doubt.

  • Owww...!

That sort of bone surgery is NOT fun.

Heal well, and take the time to heal properly before diving back in.

  • I had this surgery two decades ago so that part should be rather good. The surgery really helped me. Mine is still messed up because the Army in its wisdom decided to break one of its toys. Thank all that's holy you aren't in that situation.

  • Glad to hear you're getting it taken care of... I know it's been a while, with it bothering you, and you were hoping to get out of this without the surgery so I'm sorry you've gotta go through it but it should be a lot better... and don't worry about the drugs... I'm not sure we'll be able to notice the difference. ;)

I can't say its recommended or fast, but it is possible.

However resting up in a nice comfortable chair and not worrying about a thing would probably be better for your health and recovery. So you may want to start planning some binge watching of shows and movies you haven't had time to watch and be ready to vegetate in blissful peace and quiet.

    Take care of yourself.

  • About 6 years ago, I had the other shoulder done - SLAP tear, rotator cuff, and bone spurs, plus misc clean-up. I'm hoping this one is only minor rotator cuff damage because healing from the bone spurs will be much faster.

On the previous one, I saw the surgeon in June after all the physical therapy and other stuff failed. He wanted to schedule surgery immediately. I asked about recovery, and after hearing 8-12 weeks, I told him no. I had a once-in-a-lifetime backpacking trip scheduled with my sons in July to Philmont Scout Ranch for 11 days of high-mountain hiking and backpacking. Needless to say, the surgeon was rather apoplectic in telling me I couldn't do that. I told him to give me something non-narcotic for pain (so I didn't wander off a cliff) and I'd see him when I got back. He and his nurse thought I was nuts. It was a tough but meaningful and very memorable trip, but I managed, and had surgery immediately after I got home. I'm expecting this one to be a lot less than that SLAP tendon repair. Still sore, still downtime, but less.

I've had individual trips with each of my kids; this is my 4th with daughter. It's interesting - I've talked with her about subjects that I never, ever considered a dad would discuss with his daughter. Among the highlights will be visiting EE when we're in Atlanta. Driving the estimated 34 hours for the entire trip will be a challenge, though - fortunately, daughter is old enough and experienced enough to share the driving duties this time.

  • Actually, Elrod had two tiny versions of himself as his shoulder angels. One was constantly saying, "I'm the bad Elrod, you're the good Elrod!"

Until he got tired of it, shot them both and declared, "Good, bad, I'm the one with gun..."

Tennyo's Easter is probably the closest that has been written so far. But maybe in a future story Donna will catch the space bug from Loophole and Paulson, and well, she is time displaced...

Erin (Esoteric's) girlfriend in gen 1, yr 2 will be building and then testing an FTL drive. By gen 2 time frames, they should have something at testing stages for intersteller. In the meantime, they'll be developing an intrasteller FTL generally called a "Flicker" (similar to the concepts of a skip) drive. It will be ready for commercial uses sometime around 2015 and will start being used for industrial work in the belts. They'll be majorly expensive to build though, so not many companies/nations will be able to afford them at first. Once they start moving ore around the system, it won't be an issue.
