  • They're rare enough that 'most' people probably don't think of them as elves. They're just a paranormal/mutant/super who looks like an elf. More people are aware of the Animen than of elves/Sidhe.

Fey was the 1000, not the 1000 currently alive. How many have survived since the early 1600s.

Even so 1000 out of 7 billion isn't the best of odds, especially if they are nature lovers.

  • In my experience the best way to learn about ELF is to run objdump on several files and see what they look like. The Levine book is also a great resource for understanding executable file forma...

    Oh, wait. Wrong forum .

More seriously, I agree that before the Drow took Manhattan by storm, most adults would think 'mutant' rather than 'elf'. The press coverage about Princess Jobe and her entourage (which started in early 2007 but probably didn't really begin in earnest until after she graduated and started making a run at the records set by Lindsey Lohan, Corey Feldman, Michael Jackson, Danny Bonaduce, and Brittany Spears for 'most embarrassing public spectacle by a celebrity') might have drawn a lot more attention to Fae in general - and Fey in particular, since it is a good guess that at least one paparazzo out there would make the connection - by the time the Gen 2 stories begin.

Also, I get the impression that in ten years after Nikki and Elle manifested, the number of Fae mutants skyrocketed. But that's still a very small number, so any public recognition is most likely due the the highly public Drow rather than 'proper' fae.

    Out, damnéd Spot! Bad Doggy!

  • Nikki was supposedly the 1000th Sidhe, given there are 10-12ish or so at Whateley, that's a big number to be in one small place. in my writings, I assume for populations in areas with Celtic communities like Boston, St. Paul, of course Ireland - obviously.

... And after Nikki arrived we immediately got several in rapid succession. Whisper and Absinthe, most notably. Additionally, it depends on what you take as true when it comes to their ears... wait, follow along with this. If you think they are more like so:

harder to hide under the hair.

    then again, in her poster:

  • Not really. If I remember well, the first Sidhe of record was something like 500 years ago. IF the rate of mutants appearing was anything linear, that would average to 2 new Sidhe per year.

But it's NOT linear. It has been accelerating. I wold bet that at the moment there are at least 10 new Sidhe manifesting every year -- probably more. And a fair share of those end up at Whateley.

So, getting three or four new Sidhe students every year wouldn't be a surprise.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Geez, reincarnated sisters or not, Nikki is gonna be pissed at Elle if she's dating Belphoebe now.

At least, I assume that's Pheebs... I'm pretty sure Bova is mostly straight despite the Jobemeister's orientation whammy, she's too slender for Freight Train, and I can't imagine Jobe having that sort of look on her face, ever...

Uh oh, did I just pull the 'they all look the same to me' card? I need to get to a bio-containment facility, stat, before Jobe finds out!

(Yeah, I posted the same thing on the DevArt page. With links to the WA wiki. Sue me.)

  • Just a thought: did Nephandus introduce his mother to the Drow, and if so, well... why are any of them still alive?

Because, seriously, if Fey was losing her shit over them, how would an actual Trow react?

For that matter, it sounds like Durnir might be Trow, or something related to them. Is Jean-Armand going to find himself saddled with a new overlord?

One speculation I've considered is that the Alfar are descendants of the Sidhe in the same way the Canotila are - the same people originally, or at least closely related, but they had to adapt to the world as it was after the Sundering and became something qualitatively different. If so, could the modern Trow be the same for Durnir's folk?

Mind you, by that logic, then the Sidhe of the Five Courts era would be more like the Tuatha de Danaan, and the later Sidhe known to the Celts were similarly altered from that high point.

Another question that comes to mind: Troll Bride mused about her people, and asserted (to herself) that no Trow of purer blood than hers could tolerate sunlight. While this sounded like it was related to them being Always Chaotic Evil, the legends of the Trow are no more consistent in that than those of the Sidhe and Alfar. Is it possible that truly ancient Fae walk only in moonlight, and dwell Under The Hill, because as they get older they have to? There may even be surviving remnants who have lived the whole time since the Sundering, hiding in lands lit by some relict magic not touched by the Bastard! I don't think that there has been any mention of the Summerlands, or Avalon, and the only mention Tir na Og was a wistful comment by, ah, Terra Kashaly maybe? But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist...

It could even explain some of the inconsistencies in the stories - any Fair Folk met on the surface would be the equivalent of teenagers, or younger. Squire of Gothos, anyone?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that, though I to have to wonder about the odds of 2 OSDevers meeting in a random, non-programming, forum. It's probably less than running into a Sidhe on the street. Strange minds think alike it seems.

    I blame the ALL CAPS.

  • Yes indeed I am. Trying to be, at least. The OS Dev fora are... well, they aren't as outright vicious as, say, the Daily WTF's forum, or some reddits, but they do get a bit exercised at times. Especially if one of the mods, Brendan, decides that someone is being stupid (by his own idiosyncratic standards). It's dangerous to go alone, take this hands Angeldude a fire extinguisher

Seriously, though, lurk before you leap. Read the wiki, even if it is familiar ground, as you will need to do protocol and sync your jargon with theirs. Keep an eye out for the wingnuts (you know... everyone in the group). Read some of the bigger flamefests for a few cheap laughs (the one I linked to in the WTDWTF thread should do nicely, but watch out for falling F-bombs when your on WTDWTF).

Oh, and those odds you mentioned? Talk to Kettlekorn if you want to get another surprise. While they didn't say anything about OS dev, they do seem to have some familiarity with those sorts of kernels , though the wording could just mean that they are using source-packaging Linux distro such as Gentoo or Arch (or most distros of FreeBSD, for that matter).

It's kind of hard to do much more than try. My first serious attempt had simplistic multitasking (2 extremely simple processes), but was abandoned due to f***ing disk drivers. Not subsequent attempt has gotten close to the same state.

Seriously, though, lurk before you leap.

Oh, I've been lurking there and browsing the wiki since before I learned about Whateley and it took me a year of lurking before making an account here. I was even tempted to call you an Alta Lang , but refrained due to the bizarre jargon.

... source-packaging Linux distro such as Gentoo or Arch (or most distros of FreeBSD, for that matter).

Arch was good, I used it for about 2 or 3 years and was tempted to switch to Gentoo, but ended up installing NixOS instead, though that decision had something to due with how I was structuring my second LFS build.

EDIT: To bring this nerdy discussion full circle, here's a random command-line shell I just discovered: Elvish

I don't do kernel development. Most of what I do for a living is shell scripting and managing a custom linux distro that we use for embedded computing (we're a digital sign company). I was also dabbling with game development until Whateley motivated me to give creative writing a try. Writing kind of took over my hobby time after that.

And yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw ELF in all caps.

My first thought upon seeing somebody with pointy ears on the streets of New York, even in the WU, would be that they're a cosplayer.
