    • Background characters, there are a million of them, and not all of them get their time to shine. If you could have your way, what backgrounder would you like to see a story about? Who do you want to see more of, and given their 15 minutes of fame?

    Personally, I would love to see more about Bova. Things like her actual name. Does she have family? What was it like to learn about her CTA, and to feel like she was under a death sentence? What did she look like before she began to turn bovine?

    • I would have to say Miyet. Atm all we see are jokes played on her. But what the readers might enjoy is a look into one of the rarer mutant types. There's very few Paladins running around. And i can't think of any other characters that have that power set other than Hikaru in Gen 2. We see tons of Avatars... But no Paladins.

    • But Miyet is actually a PoV / protagonist character... you might wish that she got more stories about her... but to consider her a supporting character that you wish you knew backstory on? That's silly. Or are you not aware of the Miyet story ("Catgirl Madness")? Because THAT's an easy problem to fix. :)

    • Yes i have read her origin story. It's just since she was abandoned. She has been relegated to background status/butt of many joke. But i mainly picked her because of her powers uniqueness.

    • *nods* understandable... but I think the original post was looking more at things like... me writing a backstory for Baker, from Baker's Dozen... or any one of the people in the Dozen. Or some of the many freshman or sophomores who were in classes and doing things on campus during year one but were shadowed by the main groups: TK, Outcasts, Jobe, the Alphas, even the Underdogs. We got to show off the magick classes, eventually, with Kayda's presence... after starting down that road with Fey. We were going to do a similar thing with the Psy Arts program and the Dream Team on the Heyoka storyline... we'll pick up some of that in year two now, with Sandra and Esoteric. There's lots of things down the plot line for many of the characters who 'seem' to be backstory or supporting roles now. Maybe not so many in the current outgoing classes (like, TK's first year... you didn't meet a large number of the seniors or even juniors... but as TK's class progresses to eventually being seniors, you'll find that you will know most of the student body). Assuming we all live that long... given the ten year to one school year ration we are showing so far. :oops:

    • It CAN happen. Just look at Charge. She was a background character and then I decided to make her a POV character. So speculate away. Who knows which author might decide that there's another character worthy of being tortured written about.

    • I don't know why, but for some reason I am interested in seeing more of Kaiju, she always seemed interesting in the few scenes she has been in.

    There are a few interesting story ideas with Pristine. She's Canadian and not much has been shown in regards to Canada. So definitely some potential there.

    • Interesting ideas. What background characters would make for a good story? Probably would have to deal with their background, their goals, make it personal... with something exciting along the way.

    I'm betting we'd see a lot of students on the list, but you can't forget about the faculty members too. Yeah, I'm trying hard to come out of left field. >>

    I do have to mention Casron, but I think she has plenty of spotlight shined upon her. There's also Hartford, but that'd be problematic on it's own.

    Bardue might be interesting, considering all the kind of troubles he has to go through.. But for him, it'd probably be just a regular day on the job for him. Daily drama is part of the job.

    There would also be Jade's co-workers, the janitors. God knows what they have to face at times. Or if one day, they suddenly find a student down there.

    I might be curious on the face of Ito and Tolman too. What's it like to teach all those students who think they are supermen, yet barely have learned. What would happen the day he got hurt though? Or sick? The kind of man whose image HAS to be unmovable by his students. That a normal man CAN make those kind of moves and seem super human just with enough knowledge, training and experience. If he does show a kink in his armor, the whole gig would be up, and students might pick up on that.

    Then again, maybe getting a story of the man behind the facade might just take away from the magic and the legend.

    After Spring Break... highly probable. Follow my reasoning:
    - Superchick is Jadis' roomie, and hangs a lot with Jadis' clique, which includes Kate. So she almost certainly knows.
    - Superchick somehow inserted herself into the Malibu trip along with Gloriana's family. She and Sunny appear to have got along famously, even by phone.
    Now... can you imagine Misty managing to keep this info under her hat, even if Kate had threatened her with grievous bodily harmunearthly tortures if she let it slip? I give it fifteen minutes, tops, before she mentions how Robert was disappointed he was going to be away from Kate for a few days...

    • The first character that went through my mind while thinking about this topic was Gotterdammerung. But Yeah we already have seen a story from his PoV. So maybe a story from Sunshine's PoV in that case.

    As for Gen 2, its early, and she's had a few moments of her own so far, but I've love a full-blown Alvery POV story.

    Already in the plans. After all, there is no FUBAR in the tank in Gen 2... so there 'has' to be a story in there somewhere, right? Not sure which part of the story you'll see first... some of it is going to appear in Gen 2. Some of it appears (starts) in Gen 1. Some of it is actually in that no-gen-zone in between... which makes it a bit more of a challenge than some other things. :)

    Well... a possible origin story for her has been written in second draft for about a year, with a plot line made up.
    It does have happy (ish) moments.
    At least she'll manage to make Kayda look happy and well adjusted.

    • Domoviye has a few other character's that I'd like to see canonised. Carlonine being my favourite, and he has previously said he sees here as a secondary character. So she woudl be my pick.

    • Speaking of the Domo legion there is one canon character that I am eager to see the PoV of, and strangely terrified at the same time... a 6 in tall character that strikes fear into all who like the faintest degree of sanity, and must never ever be fed sugar.

    • You guys have to remember while being encouraging to authors that most authors whose characters in their independent fiction who get canonized actually don't succeed at canonizing those characters and continuing as canon authors, right? Most spend half a year working to redo those stories to canon parameters, sometimes resulting in 'lesser' versions of those stories because, in truth, the character and the story can't really be told and be 100% canon no matter what you do. And then, once they DO rework all that previous stuff, they discover that existing plans for their character won't work because of long planned ideas already in place for the universe, school, characters, etc. Having committed that character to being canon... they now can't continue with their plans for it and either have to adjust to telling stories from other characters or they just give up and walk away.

    For this reason, I'm personally a HUGE opponent to those IF authors who want to take perfectly good stories/characters and move them into canon. I want those authors to leave those characters outside the canon, come behind the scenes and get up to speed, and THEN and ONLY THEN consider an idea for something they would like to write. A writer who comes into canon with an idea that they REALLY want to write before they know the hidden backstory and plans for upcoming semesters... is fooling themselves. You MUST be able to adapt, to work with existing and unknown limitations and plans already in place. Just ask one of the few who DID make it work... you'll find that they accomplished it 'mostly' by telling stories that had almost nothing to do with parts of the universe that existed before they wrote them

    If Dom does become a canon author, I'm going to try my best to convince him to start something fresh... not to spend months of work rewriting a story that many have already read.

    That's not to say I can't be persuaded or overruled... but I'm pretty adamant about not ruining perfectly good stories just so they can be called canon. Or wasting an author's time rewriting something when they could be working on new content.

    • All right, I've been pretty mum about this stuff, and probably should have kept my mouth about Shisa, (sorry for opening my big mouth) but here goes.
    I know all about Kristin's and others, ideas about turning fanfic characters into Canon, and I agree with it.
    Teri is the only fanfic character of mine that MAY get turned into a POV character. And with her it's mostly because her story is radically increased in depth and scope, from a one dimensional comic character into a real person.
    With the other 'potential' characters, they're either bare bones ideas to be worked and shaped into something applicable to Whateley, or prepared with some help from a Canon writer.
    That's a lot of work, and yeah, readapting most fanfics to suit it, would be a pain in the ass. So yeah, please keep this thread focused on secondary characters that are Canon only.

    • Not that it bares entirely on this universe, but I have some experience with taking a secondary character and making them a teller of their own story. I have a rather incomplete novella posted elsewhere that I wanted to flesh out some, so I thought the easy way to do that would be to take one of the secondary characters and tell the story from that perspective along with some of the character's background so that they helped round the story. Needless to say the story has remained incomplete in my mind at least and the attempt to tell the story from another perspective has foundered on the shoals and reefs I hadn't realized were there until I started to tell the story from that perspective. And mind this is a story where I have the only input on what will be written! So, Dom, keep up the good work and write us new stuff that fits the universe.

    • Like Anne said, taking a secondary character to flesh out while still remaining true to the source material is difficult at best.

    For example, in case anyone wondered why it seemed like I dropped the Spy Kidz like a hot potato when "Imp 5: Head over Tail" hit the streets, it is NOT that I was asked to, or anything like that.

    Initially, I just wanted to see if the characters could/would be developed further within canon without needing personality transplants. Then, I realized that what I had been setting up simply wouldn't work and still be fun to read. Instead, I'm much happier with what Morpheus did write. Meanwhile, my main character managed to end up in Hel, so yeah... Life's like that sometimes.
    Forum-posted ideas are freely adoptable.

    The first few of my Hank stories started out as Fan Fiction (micro-scenes even!) and now look! I've added my first characters to the Canon!

    *nods* Same. Like I said... I CAN be persuaded or overruled. And look at JG... who took the Outcasts from completely independent fan fic with no ties to the canon universe... to being a central part of the Gen 1 canon. And even having a big impact on Gen 2's environment.

    So it IS possible. It just takes a bad ass author and a lot of work. If you really want to go there, it can be done. But also, if you're that good... you can probably start something new and make that just as bad ass. :)

    • I was totally astounded when Whisper made it to canon, considering how heavily her story dealt with established story aspects that the readers don't know much about (relatively speaking), namely GEO and the Sidhe, as well as the significant presence of two major canon characters (Nikki and Sara, in case that wasn't obvious)

    I was pretty surprised when Elrod and Morpheus were promoted as well, given how Kayda and Absinthe similarly delve into the mythic history of the WU. It's a mark of how talented Elrod, Morpheus, and Sleethr are that their stories were canonizable with only moderate visible changes, and I can't even imagine how hard they had to work to finish that conversion.

    • Sleethr had talked with me quite a bit early on as he was writing the GEO heavy early section of Whisper, so he was already a big step ahead of most stories in trying to match up to canon details on elements like that. Even so, I still had to work with him on corrections after the fact (when we were bringing the story into canon), because he'd made some game mechanics assumptions for the sake of simplicity and easier understanding by readers (giving Whisper and her opponents health bars - there are none, as GEO works on an injury accumulation system with each injury applying penalties to actions with that body part). Also, we had to do some revisions on magick and the Sidhe and Whisper's actual power set vs what was just elements of being Sidhe instead of human.

    But most of that is in the early part of the story... much of the story is just a chase story / comedy... in which an organization or law enforcement group is trying to hunt someone down and they just run around just out of reach doing things to help everyone. And other than some references to Nikki or Sara that had to be adjusted to sync up continuity wise... there wasn't a 'lot' of changes.

    Tink is mentioned in a few stories so far like in Danny from Morpheus.
    Tink's stories are hilarious to read.

What does it mean for their long term plans that they're becoming the Cutettes?     Also, I wonder if we can call the TLW, background characters at this point... Or any of the Junior Highs, what with Team Awesome!... And we still don't know who the other 2 pre-teens are... :lol: ... Yes. I will bring this up whenever! :lol: ... Still think it's <3 and Chaosdancer...

    Also, it's Teri. ... There's been a distinct point of not calling her Tink. ... Which means that her codename's different from her original one? ... :lol: if she's Butterfly.

    Less than Three was taking BMA with the high-schoolers in Year 1. She could be a freshman in Year 2, or just not hanging out with Mega-Boy, Evan, and the other youngsters.

    • While the Timeout stories by John from Wauwatosa are fun, my understanding is that they are about as impossible to turn into canon as it gets. For one thing, Joanie constantly breaks one of the cardinal rules of the WU: no time travel allowed. There are a few other, lesser incompatibilities and issues too, but that is the big one.
    Essentially, if John came back to writing and the CC happened to decide to invite him into canon, and he still wanted to use Joanie in some form, he would have to discard about 90% of the existing stories and start from scratch, with a more limited powerset (like extreme time dilation instead of time travel) which would necessarily take the stories in a different direction. Which might not be a bad idea anyway; with the benefit of hindsight, I can see some problems with writing Joanie long-term...

    • (I haven't read through the whole topic, just read the first post and clicked reply. Saw this around a few times and wondered what was up. I'm on spotty internet right now so I didn't want the slog of constantly waiting for new pages to load).

    Giggles or Megadeath. Maybe a flashback for Roulette's mom.

    For some reason I want a story from the pov of a character with Deidricks, I'm not sure why.

    I didn't even realize that that was what I wanted until the two characters I came up with (one for each gen) both had Deidricks.

    Actually the most interesting Deidricks character to see a pov from would be the one in Hawthorne. I can't recall her name but she is one of the few people with Deidricks without a tech based power.

I mean, was he really just a normal guy that wanted to make a world-class prep school, or was he a prognosticator on the level of Mrs. Potter who saw the need to make a mediocre school that would one day fail and, when no one was looking, get turned into a superhero school.
