Why not a PK?
I wonder whose still alive? Or dead...
Previous guesses: Mrs. Potter's still alive? Mimeo's still alive? Mephisto's still alive? Ty West is dead? There's a World Tree Seedling somewhere? Lamplighter's dead?

Oh, no, wait... MEPHISTO!
Edit: D'OH! Two minutes of thinking cracked this one... there was some hinting about that Tractor & Vanity Girl will show up in Gen2, and Elrod even bothered to give their full names. Tractor is an History major. He would be a natural for the job.
Question is: why?
Possible answer: they have kids now, and worry about orphaning them. So they took low(er)-risk jobs at Whateley.

My first guess is that there will be a substance called 'Restigen', and a corresponding antidote called 'Restorigen'. As the names imply, they inhibit and initiate mutant-type regeneration. These substances are likely the product of a mage/devisor, and likely are mythosacitve. As such, the DPA regulates them as a controlled substance. More than likely, a dose or two of these substances can be located in secure storage at many Level 1 trauma centers . In addition, many high-level regenerators will carry a dose of each on their person at all times. Similarly, most teams of mutants (hero or villain) who either have or face a high level regenerator will have a dose or two in their medical kit.
My second guess concerns Diedrick's syndrome. While there is (still) no universal cure, researchers will have divided the syndrome into multiple variants. The first major variant is the trigger. For some mutants, the trigger will be the use of a particular power set (ie: devisor), while for others, the trigger is a lack of use of a power set. Finally, for a few mutants, the trigger cause is independent of power usage. Further, an analysis of a patient's BIT can suggest that certain courses of action will have higher chances of success than others, but it is very difficult to translate from one bit scan to another. It may happen that having a value of 9B in sector 2451 of the report from Knick-Knack's BIT scanner corresponds to a yellow left index chaka when examined by Psilent Green, but is this actually an indicator that a Havoc inhibitor will work?

well, both a and b would have many possibilities branching out from them.
If she's at Whateley, what does she do?
If she left, again, what does she do.
In both cases lots of possible options.
I rather like the idea of her having an existence somewhat like the Shell People in Anne McCaffrey's Ship stories. She lives in a life support module that is plugged into some much larger devise/device that acts as her body.

I realize it's a popular trope in comics to have a character die only to miraculously reappear at a later issue. That said, let me nip this in the bud right now.
Aunghadhail is not coming back. To quote the movie, "This bitch is toast!" Or to put it more succinctly:
She's not pinin'! She's passed on! This Queen is no more! She has ceased to be! She's expired and gone to meet her maker! She's a stiff! Bereft of life, she rests in peace! Her metabolic processes are now history! She's off the twig! She's kicked the bucket, she's shuffled off her mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!She's f*ckin' snuffed it!..... THIS IS AN EX-SIDHE!!

Personally I don't get why people keep thinking that she's coming back, she's a hero's mentor and dear friend and this ain't Star Wars, Moreover, her death furthered Nikki's character development and was a heroic death, put it all together and "(S)he's dead, Jim." There are some characters you don't bring back, Aunghadhail is one of them.

Two points here:
a) EE, you missed the part about "if you hadn't nailed her to the perch, she'd be pushing up the daisies"
b) We've seen a lot about spirits being less than nice, and a lot of evidence that Unga Dunga wasn't exactly a polite or nice spirit (or Sidhe in real-life). That she was a very bad influence on Nikki. So, to paraphrase Carson, "Good riddance to bad rubbish!"

While I don't expect Unga-Dunga to come back, nor Heyoka, Cat, or anyone else that has died, I would like to point out a flaw or two in your rant. She's been bereft of life for a long, long time. Her metabolic processes ceased then too, and I am unsure if she was mortal to began with, but if so she shuffled off the coil then too.
Now we might get Absinthe flashbacks, or other stories from prehistory, but Fey is now alone in her head, and only Jade talks to herself and answers back.

Not just Jade, excluding Avatars, there's still Cyber Kitty as for Prehistory stuff, we know at least 3 other Avatars whose spirits are old enough to remember the Sundering though one of them might not have been in the Solar System at the time, the path may change but the destination remains the same.

Three? By your reasoning, it'd be four. The one who may not have been in the Solar System would be Tennyo, the Star Stalker. The other three are Wyatt, Lanie, and Kayda. Remember that the sundering shattered space-time itself, so in the true history, the Tribes were around at the time of the Sidhe as well, which means Wakan Tanka remembers (Kayda 6 - Medicine Girl).

Well I wasn't sure how old Lanie's spirit is hence the "At least" nor how involved Grizzly was, but then there is 5, if we count Danny but that's besides the point, the point was that there are other spirits who would remember true history than Aunghadhail, ones that have Avatars that Absinthe would be able to meet, one of whom hosts one of them and channels another or is that hosts 2 and channels a third? Both explanations have been given. Regardless, Aung isn't strictly needed for the role in the fanfic.

And quite nice mammaries they are, too...

I think that the reason theories about Unga Bunga coming back persist is because of the vagueness surrounding her state of being alive in the first place. I mean, she has been killed before. And while the circumstances of this death were entirely different from the last time, I can understand thinking that she might be still capable of the avatar/reincarnation trick she pulled with Nikki (and Cirque)

Well, Aung was first of NINE queens. There are probably others as well. I know one of my probably characters in fall 07 is a Norwegian girl who's now a Sidhe, and reputedly the seventh of the queens, although she doesn't remember it - despite others who DO (like a bratty little sister). Ice / Nordic powers. Interesting girl, she will be, ummm??? A nickname she will have, yes???

That does mean that there'll be two more reputed Sidhe Queens in the world, right? The Seventh and a Younger Than Seventh, Which is Eighth or Ninth. ... Or is "like a bratty younger sister" a statement more of manner, than a statement of ... statementness...
What if all Nine have returned at some point in Gen2? Well, obviously the First died... but she returned... ... And what about the King? ... He isn't named Oberon, right? ... There was mention of a Sister who made Aunghadhail infertile... Is there a Titania? ...

Was there talk about fusion power working out? Yes... from Islands in the Sun...
one of the new fusion reactors that will be coming out ... fusion ship
And then there's reactors made by the inventor-Mutant named Fusion... And his reactors might not use nuclear fusion... Miss a capital, or add one by mistake, either in reading or writing, confusion results...
But, apparently use nuclear fusion reactor by-products with other things to make other fuel?
Fusion reactors ... Fusion and cellulose/coal mixture to produce either an octane/ethanol mix or several other products that would seriously cut Japan’s needs on imported oil.
the thing about fusion is that Japan would only have easy access to 1 of the 2 ideal fusion fuels, Deuterium, the lesser of the two ideal fusion fuels though it is better than one of the 3 hydrogen isotopes, and the real tricks are in energy collection and the energy loss from initiating and maintaining the reaction, no matter what method you use, you are loosing energy to waste heat, there's also the question of how you harness the energy that comes in the form of loose subatomic particles that pass through most matter and is neutrally charged? With the WU level of technology, solutions to those problems are more reachable.

I'm sorry, would you clarify? How could deuterium be "better than one of the 3 hydrogen isotopes," when deuterium IS one of the three known hydrogen isotopes? It's like saying "Revenge of the Sith" is better than one of the three Star Wars prequels...

Period, end, stop. The exact engineering/fuel solution is unimportant.
Again, Commerical Fusion is online in Japan, the US, Western Europe. So are several other techs that are currently being discussed/therorized in RL, to replace some of the need for oil, as well as more pie in the sky (but feasible) ideas.

So, how much energy do you guys think fusion reactors generate, as a percentage of National Power/World Power/Etc? Given America, it might be different from state to state? 50% anywhere seems a bit much? Does 10% sound too low?
How small can they get, under General Tech and Gadgeteers? I bet not that small. Fusion Powered Powered Gadget Armor is impossible, I think. That small is only possible with Sci-Fi, Fallout and Mr. Fusions...
So, there should be a few Fusion Powered Powered Devise Armors, as Devises can do anything... But, if a Devisor is making Fusion Tech in the first place, they might already know too much Actual Physics for their Devisor-ness to twist physics?

Let me see...
Small, proof-of-concept plant goes online around... 2008? (The one in Whateley in 2006 does not count, it's a devise)
If that's REALLY enticing, first commercial plants begin building in 2009. Consider about 2 years to build, so commercial production begins around 2011-12.
I would think that by 2016 it would still count for less than 10% total power production.
- Kristin Darken
-
Actually, there one in 2006 is straight up tech. It's alien in origin, but 'standard' enough in concept that just looking at the plans for it would enable all the existing fusion researchers to slap palms to foreheads and make the jump to what they were doing wrong very quickly. By 2007, multiple projects would have working prototypes. Putting them online commercially is a different story...(The one in Whateley in 2006 does not count, it's a devise)
They haven't pushed out everything else yet less because of what it will take to build them but more because too many people freak out about anything that has a potential for radiation (thank you cold war nuclear winter propaganda). The big difference between here and there is that gadgeteers can build these plants a number of different ways... there's only so much the oil industry can do to bury the research. Here, we're far more limited on how many parallel research groups might solve the puzzle and money can limit that just as easily as support it.
However, its important to note that the fusion plants that are being built are NOT compact units. Like fission, we're not putting fusion plants in anything shy of an aircraft carrier, yet. Will that change? Yes, but that requires materials development... and not a lot of gadgeteers focus in on materials theory/practicals for innovation events. So they end up making just enough of a substance for their project and its not reproducible publicly... not because the theory is unsound, but because the materials we can manufacture don't meet the strength, flexibility, conductivity, or stress demands (or whatever).
Fusion isn't the only big power shift, though. I'm currently putting together a story with PoV from Sophia Isenhart (who was introduced in MageOhki's Islands in the Sun) about her project from before she worked with Megumi on Japan's project... which takes place during the G1 timeline in Egypt/North Africa (specifically in the Sahara) called "Iron Wisdom and the Temple of the Gold Scorpion." Sophia is a gadgeteer specializing in power generation and storage systems born and schooled in Germany. She is contracted to provide Egypt with a viable national power system that is 100% solar. She turns it around and gives them a system that puts Egypt in a position of being able to supply power to most of Africa... and if the rest of Northern Africa cooperates with them, they could provide power to all of Africa AND Europe.
And that is why Japan hires her for the Island project, where she is developing a power system that could put Japan in the position of supplying all of Asia... using tidal forces.
Of course, what really makes Sophia's stuff viable is that its not just the 'generator' method that she advances, it's the entire grid/transmission and storage systems. Which are, of course, the main reasons we can't make more use of them in the real world at this time... we don't have 'battery' systems capable of holding the sort of charge demanded by half the planet during the night when the solar panels aren't actively drawing. But Sophia doesn't just have solar collector farms that are efficient enough that it seems disconcertingly dark somehow in the middle of the Sahara day, she has a collection system that includes 'spires'... and each spire is capable of holding sufficient stored power for its entire section of the grid/neighborhood for several days (the exact amount is dependent on local power demand and how many spires are built in, of course) which means that power source outages become less of an issue. And any spire can transfer power through the network to other spires so a LOT of the system has to be down to really cut off a part of the grid... but even when cut off, neighborhoods can maintain operation for some time before going dark.
So... sure, there's fusion. But its not the only game in town in G2. It's not even the most efficient.

Why? Because of political reasons, a LOT of which have nothing to do with the reasons touted around in public (safety, regulation, etc)... it is ALL about the oil lobby not wanting the competition. Remember, I've worked nuclear power for the military. I KNOW what's possible with it... and look at how the Fukushima incident has been spun to scare people away from using nuclear. Even with Chernobyl and Fukushima counted as strikes against nuclear, there is still LESS damage done to people and land than the oil industry has achieved on its own. Same with coal. Combine the damages to people and land for coal, oil and gas and there's a towering list of damages that SHOULD make people cringe in embarrassment for even thinking that Fukushima was 'bad'. But that would require people to be properly educated in how both industries work and where they damage people and the environment. And that is not in the interest of certain very profit heavy industries and their wealthy owners and shareholders.
But when you have gadgeteers actively pushing the development of non-fossil fuel oriented electrical systems, it's going to be a lot harder for congress to get in the way of that just because they've been lobbied to oppose it. Partly because the gadgeteers are going to build shit anyway ...

Gadgeteers really change the calculus of tech deployment simply because there are too many of them to control, they're good, and if they can't do it in the USA, they'll find some third-world country that DOES want to own a 'first world' technology for political status. And serious energy independence.
Makes me think of a RAH sci-fi story about a team that invents very efficient solar 'screens' (think solar cells - described differently, but it's a reasonable comparison). Cheap, easy to make - and their company gets attacked from all sides. So they very publicly put out the technology on a very low-royalty patent, so the entrenched interests can't stop all competition. Gadgeteers make the deployment model more like this than our real-world.

When you burn hydrocarbons (coal/oil/natural gas) you end up with carbon dioxide and water. There's no getting around that. Increasing the efficiency only reduces -- somewhat -- the amount of CO² produced, Even at a theoretically-impossible 100% efficiency, you would still be pumping out about 1/3 of the CO² a regular powerplant produces.
So, it helps a bit but doesn't really solve the problem. OTOH, biodevisors might figure out better carbon-sequestering crops, and better biofuels. That would make renewable fuels competitive with fossil fuels, which would be a BIG help.
Some efficient way to harvest phosphorus and other important fertilizer elements from seawater would also be really important, not only for biofuel growing but for food growing.

The US burns about 800 million tons of coal every year at about 570 plants (each producing 500MW of power) to provide 44% of the electricity load .This uses about 90% of all coal the US mines each year (around 950 million tons), a rate we can sustain for another 250 years before exhausting ALL coal accessible to us in the US, via existing mining techniques and technology. The US has about 1/4th the total world's coal reserves.
Worldwide consumption of Oil is about 91 million barrels/day. A barrel is roughly 42 gallons... so yearly consumption, by the world of crude oil is about 1.4 trillion gallons. The US's share of that consumption is 21%.How much is left? That's a bit scarier a number - about 1.3 trillion barrels (54.7 trillion gallons). So if we're using that up at a rate of 1.4 trillion per year... that's only about 40 years left at our current consumption rates.
The US uses about 27 trillion cubic feet of Natural Gas each year. Estimated reserves in the US are around 1.968 trillion cubic feet That suggests we have about 73 years left in the reserves. (World reserves are 6,973 tcf, while world consumption is around 113 tcf - only about 62 years)
There are, quite literally, people who are alive today who will live long enough to see a point at which we simply cannot use oil or natural gas as a primary source of power... not for cars, not for heating, not for electricity. Natural gas is also used in making plastics, paints, dyes, anti-freeze, film for pre-digital cameras, even some fertilizers and medicines. Crude oil? plastics, solvents, lubricants.
We honestly don't have time for politicians to get in the way of innovation in the interest of protecting their wealthy business supporters. But yeah, I agree that another source for power is absolutely critical, and relying solely on solar and wind alone won't cut it. Nuclear and fusion will have to be the workhorses, unless we want to cover entire deserts in solar panels, or get off our butts and start putting solar panels in space and figuring out how to beam the power back to Earth.

Or, handle it as a 'credit' thing. Each adult, upon completing some accrediting action... military service, a stable non-minimum wage job, an education... etc..earns a credit value. Being allowed to conceive a child takes a set number of credits... and can be contributed to by anyone who has credits. In most circumstances, a qualified mom and dad would have enough credits to have one child. But friends or associates who see them as good parents (and are personally more focused on things other than having a family) could contribute their credits to that couple, allowing them to have a second or third child as well.

Eventually, there'd still be a market for meat from whole animals, but it would eventually contract to a niche market.
On the power front, we know plans existed for an anti-matter reactor back in 2006 (courtesy of Hive) and Drs Pollard and Shandy were aware of the power generation possibilities of anti-matter when testing a certain Miss Wilson, but as they said back then, other sources of anti-matter are prohibitively expensive. It's likely that's still true a decade later, so there may be one whose supplies are refreshed periodically by a certain visitor in active use, but any others are likely to be part-time experimental efforts.

Pretty sure you mean Vic rather than Jimmy, since Vic is the hydrokinetic and Jimmy is a PK brick with benefits.

Likely:
* All 'traditional' student dorm cottages plus Hawthorne will have been extended and refurbished
* Melville will have been refurbished
* Some of the teaching blocks may also have been extended / new teaching blocks built (after all, if the number of students attending is increasing, sooner or later most of the existing teaching accommodation will be in use simultaneously)
* All three arenas will have been upgraded - the Area 99 tech of Gen 1 may now be in Area 77 or may have been upgraded further
* The staff village (IIRC off campus, but fairly close) will have been refurbished / extended, as will the guest accommodation (on campus, probably closer to the main gate than the bulk of buildings)
Possible:
* Holographic technology / force fields will have been installed in the Holbrook Arena / McFarlane Auditorium
* A dedicated on-campus road leading to a new ER entrance to Doyle, which avoids the main student throughfares
* Melville extended - given it's toroidal shape beforehand, possibly now a figure of eight
Maybe we can even start speculating on who gets assigned to which cottage...

Will Glyph admit to Whateley that she's a changling?
Will Lapin, who is publically out as a changeling, be put in Poe or does Whateley consider doing so too big a risk to Poe's secret.
is Dragonfyre safe enough for a normal cottage, considering tey allowed her on a normal flight I'd say yes.
could Nick live in a normal sized room or would that force him into Hawthorn?
Would they risk having someone who is literally hung like a horse in a co ed dorm?

I don't think that the risk is too big. I mean, Ayla was publicly intersex without being a danger to Poe. The big danger is when a student on campus changes genders, and then moves to Poe - because it forms a connection between the two events. But there's no reason for other students to realize that it was Lapin's changeling status that put her in Poe (as opposed to, say, mental trauma).
Of course, we've all been assuming that the dorms haven't changed much. A decade is plenty of time to add another dorm, or make other dorms coed, or to restructure them entirely.

Shhh... we can't tell them that Whateley's really in a forest just outside Boston of 2054, the Aliens were just trying to talk to us through the corn, if Ayla didn't have phase-shifting powers her bones would snap like weak twigs because she's really the big-bad villain of the series and Franklin Delarose was dead throughout almost the whole movie.
