  • Hi y'all!

Wow, dang, it's been years hasn't it?

I'm still me. Still married to Renae, who I now call Ren in everyday life, even in front of my mother. Mom is tolerant, but not terribly understanding and she still can't seem to wrap her head around Ren's pronouns, or that I now officially and legally have a wife instead of a husband. It could be worse.

I wandered back in because my long distance girl friend, Erisian, started writing here. Yes, Ren has met her and likes her. It's not cheating if you have permission from everyone involved. Last night she linked me to a thread that started about four months ago asking about Heyoka 3. That had me confused because Heyoka 3 was never finished. Apparently the survival class scene was published separately? I dug through an old backup disc and found my old HK3 notes, and the Survival Class scene in question. If someone points me to where to put that, I can repost it.

No, I never intended to ship Heyoka and Buttercup. (I had a different target in mind!) Jamie was just being extra vulnerable to glamours. In the very next scene a teacher very pointedly gave Jamie a shield talisman to wear to block some of that out, because boy did they need it! I deliberately wrote Jamie to have flaws and weaknesses as a counterpoint to the overpowered Kimba trend.

Yes, I've been told Jamie is no more. RIP. I knew when I left that Jamie was fair game, and there were issues that made it difficult to keep writing that character.

As for myself, thing are going ok. I'm still teaching and learning Tai Chi. I'm starting to get into some of the really fun old school stuff there. As Ren mentioned a couple months ago, we're in the process of raising a teenager. My life more or less revolves around getting Ren to all her appointments on time since she doesn't drive. No, I haven't been writing much of anything lately.

Hey hey! good to see you. :)

Give me a couple mins and I'll give you access to some of the behind the scenes author-y stuff.

  • Welcome back! ... You and Renae are married??! Totally did not know. ... Have a belated Congratulations!

People were shipping Heyoka + Buttercup? ... *Remembers* ... I can see how they would.

... So, you gave Heyoka to the whole WU when you left? That's why they could be used, unlike the characters of the others who haven't been heard from, but also why you didn't know precisely what happened to them?

    Hope things stay okay!

  • Welcome back.

Congratulations on the marriage, I hope you and Renae have long happy lives together.

And at least one good thing came out of Heyoka's death. Phoenix there got dragged kicking and screaming into the Cabal to write Hank stories.

Please stick around and join the mayhem, even if it just to bounce story ideas off of JG, Elrod, EE, and Morpheus. They really need idea help, they write so little.

Be sure to check out Gen 2.

    Watch out for wild Tinks.

  • Thanks for all the congratulations, though Ren and I were married years before we started writing for Whateley. The real congratulations goes to Ren for finally getting in front of a judge to get her name and gender marker changed. She's been my spouse for 18 years, but legally my wife for only a few months. Same sex marriage ftw! Unfortunately they only have M and F on driver's licenses, so I won't be getting mine changed in the foreseeable future.

I remember how I used to look over and see the pink satin of Sapphire's place on her screen all the time and I told her since she was reading it all the time, she should try writing it. Then when she got into Whateley, I got inspired to make my own character too.

Yes, I did tell the other authors they could keep using Jamie. I knew what a PITA it was to coordinate between different characters, authors and timelines to keep everything on track. It only seemed fair to let them keep using the character if they wanted to.

  • I don't read Gen 2, so I don't know if the Thunderbird spirit has found a new host, but you could try a story about a new avatar for the spirit, and the spirit dealing with the PTSD of the murder of Jamie, even after a decade.

Edit for clarification: the Spirit I was talking about was Heyoka's T-bird spirit.

  • spirits != ghosts... generally.

But there is always room at the table for an author that wants to play with new characters... and as we told Ren (and recently JG when he popped back in), since we are just now starting a new Fall session, its a good time to add in a new character in the Gen 1 timeline. Although if you want a Poe changling, you'll have to hurry, there are quite a few on the roster already. :) There's plenty of room for non-changlings though... which can include gay, lesbian, TG (but not transformed by their manifestation), and others...

Or for an easier 'catch up' you could work in a late arrival in Gen 2.

Or plenty of other options. Assuming you WANT to write. If you don't, that's fine too. We're happy to have people back even if its just to hang out and make fun of JG.

  • Ha... my 'first' character is still on the run in the South. My second character (in 2nd Gen) is in Twain. I finally got around to a Poe placement with my THIRD character (Esoteric)... and my fourth character spends most of the Gen 1 time frame in Egypt and starts out in the second Gen timeframe in Japan. She *might* make it to Whateley to teach a little. My fifth character... assuming I follow up and write it at all... will be a Whateley student... but will be in Melville, not Poe.

Oh... and I'm only middle management if they actually promote cat-herds these days. :-p

  • So how many returned authors have there been in the last 6 months? And how many official canon authors are there that have at least shown up recently vs the total?

Any Bad Ideas I have and microscene OC character stories are freely adoptable.

  • The first to go dark and not return was Liliandra... no contact on any level since leaving.
Then, Babs who has also not been seen at all since leaving, even on other sites where her stories were posted.
Tensei and Drunkfu left before things died completely on the old site and have not returned, though some are in contact with them.
Diane has been seen far more recently (on other sites), but has not been on the Whateley site since she left.

None of these five have returned to make accounts on this site (unless they have done so under other names so as not to be recognized). And, of course, Bob Arnold passed away.

All other past members of the team have dropped in at least long enough to make an account and say hi, now. Even if they aren't actively writing (though some of them ARE writing or at least advising on characters/topics that they're interested in).

  • Welcome back Motley and hi there! As others have said, feel free to do as you please (provided it's not something JG would do), and don't feel beholden to write if you don't wish to.

It's just nice for those of us (relatively) new to the universe to see the old guard return to whichever degree.

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

  • Not to contradict Kristin, but I'm not sure ScramblerJ has shown up here that I'm aware of, either. But they went mostly away even before the first stories were released.

(I just wish I'd thought of that joke when Renae started posting. I could then make it a running gag.)
