  • That was pretty good. It sets up the story nicely and has a decent flow to it.

I'm not much of an editor and Malady has caught on to the same typos I did.

All I can say, is "At least they can't swim outside the Americas?" ... Or can they?

... Hmm... With a Dev making these things, are they programmed not to hunt Devs, as a safety measure and perhaps hunting Exemplars only or something? Nah.

  • @Malady: I'd assume that Essylt will be taking classes like any other freshman, but eating meals "at home" so she can be with her kid. Classes mean homework, so she might be encouraged to meet some people she can study with.

Hm. Tennis balls, and Whateley has a mandatory Phys. Ed. requirement. Ow! Then there's the matter of whether there's even room left to retract to on really cold days. If it were me, I'd be looking up shrinkage spells as soon as I heard there was a library ('cause you know someone has thought of that as a dirty trick to play).

  • Well, my reason for using Jade was, of course, the "If you only knew" factor. The irony of "here is this person that knows what you are going through", but you don't know it, so you assume they had it easy.

and Null, my guess is she has a super Devisor-made cup, with lots of space-age padding materials and super fit whatsits and so forth.

  • To answer your Questions Mal:

Alicia grew up in the Bayou, and likely could recognize wild hog and alligator wounds fairly easily.

"Ah think this is wrong, a gater don' rip an tear lahk that, they crush with the strength of their jaws"

Similarly, if you want to exclude mountain lion and bear attacks, whom better to ask than a Bear spirit and Mountain Lion spirit?
Ophelia sorted them geographically, so that they could eliminate local species of predators.

In this case the hands were deus ex machina, in that fingerprint identification could be done on the victims.

the memories of being buried in snow go waaaay back to the beginning of Eire, where she awoke after the burnout and mindlessly shambled about St. Paul.

as for the line about her eyes, Tanuki hosts the spirit of the raccoon dog.

They are the basis for the Japanese myth of the Tanuki, a mischievous animal spirit known for playing tricks. One of the prominent features are over-sized testicles on males.

When it comes to trusting people, Essylt seems to be able to determine who is good and who isn't instinctually, not really a power. But Aggie approached her, and was friendly. She may have sensed a kindred soul, or someone that had a lot of pain that they were dealing with.

And the Elephant in the room...

Nikki: "I am not an elephant!"

I will be delving into their past, and why there is mutual apprehension.

  • Yes Mal, I killed Bobbi and Tiffany. Mwahhah hah hah hah

As far as the travel speed, that's assuming that they are going by foot. They might be in some form of vehicle. You are also assuming there is only one.

Angela IS an exemplar 6, so she got smacked with the pretty stick a bunch of times. She is quite pretty. and at 6 foot, she combines the aspects of beauty with stature... looooong legs, and all, And bigger girls can pull off being busty and curvy easier than us small girls.

As for why she appears, setting the tone of the team members, post vacation.

As for Becca, a toddler scared by the thing that makes hissing breathing sounds and is covered in black and has a scary breather mask and eye covering goggles.

  • "Her hands behind her back, Sam Everheart stood at attention,"

That's sounding like she started speaking while unconsciously standing at ease.

At attention, her feet would be together, her hands would be at her sides, and she'd be looking straight ahead. Not ideal for a briefing.

From one who spent entirely too long in the army you are exactly correct, she is standing at ease, This is probably so thoroughly drilled into anyone who reaches the rank of Admiral that they do it without even thinking about it. I do it at times.... Got pulled over once and just did it while doing the are you drunk walk... not drunk but very tired!

... Although, TK Claws could produce wounds that look just like regular claws?

I have to wonder if Eire just got signed up for the same "BMA for Masochists (and losers of bets)" that Metro and Bloodwolf got themselves volunteered for. If Daddy's Precious Gem is also in the class, I don't see BW taking excessive violence against a lactating mother very well.

  • Well Null, if you wanna drop her in class with Mads and BW, I have no objections. Emerald won't make the cut, I don't think. No skills beyond fencing. Essy won't be a pushover though. a high powered mage who knows armed and unarmed Irish Martial Arts. Add in the fact her weapons are made of the hardest wood in the world, have mithril inlay, and layer upon layer of spells on them... She's gonna be a pretty formidable combat mage.

I was thinking of the Special Topics class that Chaka, Aquerna, and company took in Winter 07. The idea isn't so much to learn to use particular uber-weapons, but weapons and other styles appropriate to the students.

Only fencing? Even with epee and saber under her belt, Emerald's going to get curb-stomped by half the swordsmen we've seen. Not that I mind.

  • Yeah, Essylt would get in that class, because of her instruction from Brogue. She uses twin cudgels, and a shillelagh. and has been instructed in the following:

Dornálaíocht - which is a form of bare-knuckle boxing.

Coraíocht - which is an Irish wrestling style that emphasizes leverage.

Speachóireacht - a style of kick-fighting, which emphasizes using the shins, as well as going after the shins, thighs, and knees.

and for armed combat, Bataireacht, or Irish stick-fighting.

in a Fair hand-to-hand unarmed fight, Emerald would get her ass kicked ( and did ).

oh, and as a little bonus, Essylt and her new, shorter hairstyle.

Ah, she doesn't like kids with weapons? But, getting weapons into the hands of the skilled is a good choice.

She's a Whateley graduate. It may not be a problem with 'kids with weapons' but with robbing Peter's firepower to pay off Paul.

Oh. ... I wonder if that's part of the hunters' implants...

There's equipment on the market for faking a tower to hijack cell phone connections. The handlers likely have something like that.

Jamming the signal screws with piece of equipment on the same frequency in the area, and can be detected much further away than the effective range - another way of yelling to anyone listening "Hey! Enemy action here!"

As a working hero herself, Lake should have alternative comms available that work on frequencies that Whateley Security monitors.

Or, this could be the time that we find out if Essy's Royal Sidhe. Not subtle, but quite attention-getting.

  • Speaking of the handlers, it would make sense to set up an ambush for Whateley personnel driving (most of the Security force consists of well-trained baselines) or flying (like Lady Astarte) from the school. Astrally or telepathically projecting from the school may be a different matter. Nonetheless, the more one can distract and deplete a facility's defenses, the better the chances of success for one's strike team.

Anyone still wanting the cell phones to work?

  • Well, after dark in New Hampshire on a night where it's freezing, wind and ice and snow wouldn't be noticed. The lightning and thunder sure, unless the howling of the wind drowned that out.
The gun swap was a tactic to put additional firepower into the hands of the one that would be striking at close range. At a distance, the armor-piercing rounds wouldn't have penetration power, but at point-blank, or close to it? Yes.
Renata came unprepared, she wasn't looking for a fight, (as I will reveal soon, She and Essy were in town to pick up some groceries and puppy food - I had said earlier that the campus store, probably didn't have dog food, but that's probably not true. Clover has to get food for Buttons somewhere. Maybe Roger just doesn't like the food they have in stock?) Additionally, she is a rather new teacher at the school, and has to learn about the dynamic of how people strike at the school.
The cause of the cell disruption is something that the handlers have, as for it not being detected at Whateley? It could be a gadget or devise that compensates somehow, or just has a shorter range, and isn't picked up miles away at the school.

Hawkins is a bigot and racist. the handlers seem to be mostly H1 wanna-bes, and not a tactical squadron. "You can lead a man to water, but you can't make him think." - They were given the tools, but who knows what they could do if they had an actual tactician with them.

I didn't say how large the pit was exactly, but it was more than big enough for an 8 foot hunter to fall into and break its neck, plus room for Tanuki to fit, and hide behind the corpse. Plus the hunter had to look down in, and jump in... so guessing at least 10 feet deep, by unknown width.

In one of the Kayda stories, I think it was Earth Mother who mentioned that in place of hobgoblins, uncontrolled Essence could also manifest as random events or coincidences similar to probability and/or reality warping.

It's possible that the powers testers could put Essy in an Essence-depleted area, and measure any residual warping that still goes on. The likely effects of leaving a Sidhe in such a place for very long would make that an unethical test, but it could be done. What really happens would be up to RB :)

Is there actually anywhere around Dunwich and Whateley that is essence depleted?

Essence-corrupted, yes, but essence-depleted would be unlikely...

One wonders if that will affect Clover now, probably not, because while she has her well lit, she probably hasn't gotten really good control of her essence yet. I know that one of the reasons that she hadn't yet had her well lit was lack of discipline with essence in the first place... Wonders what her summer story is that she and her friends got their wells lit... Don't think they had enough discipline to do it the hard way...

  • Fixed the spelling, sometimes my fingers go faster than my brain.

My recollection is that Bunny does have some experience in bio-divising.

Jobe went on, “Of course you’re thanking me. It’s only natural. But I’m not interested in your little problem. I’m busy with my own projects right now. I just don’t have the time. But try Hazmat. If he can’t get the job done, try Bugs, then Telomer, then Greasy, or even Erlenmeyer if you’re really desperate.” Then he stepped into his private lab and slammed the door in her face.

She has enough Bio-division knowledge to be part of what I need her for, since she has commented before on cellular structures and eggs, and has more than a passing familiarity with those. It's not her main field, no.

And She was the 2nd person recommended by Jobe for the hibernation project, so he acknowledges she has some bio-skill.

    ...me, surely," he said.
At least that is the way I would write this. I'm sure you would put the comma in the quotes and not include the period. I also think that in a quote like this that you wouldn't capitalize the marker for who is speaking unless it were to give the person their proper name.

I didn't see Fey wonder who she was... Kodiak? Now he's the one with the ancient memories. But Aung, who would maybe clue Fey in is absent. However, I suppose it may be in the microscene threads, but I haven't seen how Essy came to know quite so much about how Fey acts. So far as I know they haven't interacted at all, so she is just making assumptions based on other people's reports.

  • She knows of Nikki, having seen the "nature" picture. She also has a mysterious thing going on, where she knows things she couldn't possibly know at times, or at least she had vague intuitions. Upon hearing Aunghadhail's name in the Eire series, she reflexively took a defensive stance, and covered, asking not to be hit. She has identified her birthday as St. Patrick's Day, which was the day of her burnout, something she shouldn't remember. Nor should she remember seeing the 4-leaf clover in the snow, before her male former self passed out.

She does have the Kevra-reenforced suit, and for an EX6, being afraid of having her suit ripped in battle is a concern. But you might be reading too much into her. Valravn, after Roger attacks Metro a time or two (in case the idiot was at fault the first time). Even with short legs, a Corgi's faster than an average unaugmented person, and I don't think they cower if they think their human might be in danger (terriers sure don't)

So far, the only "normal" animals that haven't automatically disliked or feared him have been horses and cetaceans.
Ravens might not fall for that sort of thing, but werewolves turn out to be an exception.

Buttons is a Gabriel Hound (which could be anything from Cu Sith to a Hellhound), and that could be problematic given the associations with death, the daoine sidhe, and Herne. 8P

  • They didn’t have long to ponder though, as they were ushered out quickly.

What could be behind the door?

Oh, right, the brain-hacking project. They must have made fast progress on it, unless it's something we ourselves have been working on, for quite sometime.

After what seemed like an eternity, Trisha had cleaned her side of the room, and Jordan was okay.

    See! They can be trained!

But, what if it's all a ruse to gain access to Jordan's future developments, as a way to cut out Ayla?

Jordan watched, curious about how much influence the spirit had on Aggie, even when it came to small things like using chopsticks instead of a fork, and picking Asian foods.

Do we know any other hosts who've been so strongly influenced by their avatar spirits, other than Pejuta, Pounce, Miasma, Aquerna, Mokole, Kodiak, Bloodwolf, and Razorback?

It is often either played up for laughs (Pounce, Miasma, Aquerna) or down-played completely as being all part of the super-superpowers lottery (Pejuta, Kodiak).

Angela was glad that they couldn’t see that she had tears running down her cheek. She nodded rapidly. Taking the sleeping girl out of the bundle of blankets, she looked at her, and wondered how her own little one was doing.

    Awwwwwww.

There, the told Essylt all about Donnie and Lucy Jensen, and what had happened to them.

Maybe they didn't know all about Donnie and Lucy after all?

Maybe the real Lucy was switched with a clone, which underwent the massive organ failures that people thought might be in Belphoebe's future, and only just now have they been able to wake her up with the cortex bomb, telepathic transmitters, and apoptotic failsafes disabled?

Perhaps our friend here has found a means of perfecting it?

Even so, how will she cope with now having a male body and hormones?

Will this be enough to keep the school safe from the H-1 extremists gathering around Dunwich?

Maybe they can turn the alpha into unwitting mole (maybe even a naked mole rat) for their side?

It is the result of mutation, there is no telling how it will work out... After all Anomaly ended up with both sets of gonads, while Diamondback ended up fully F with a dual nature.

    Musing on War Situation:

So, if Aung commands the Eastern Front, then Essy commands one of the other directions... I assume the West.

Aung doesn't worry about losing one front if the East is won? Hmm... Strange, 'cause losing one front might lose the war?

But likely there's other lands that could buffer assaults, even if Ériu's kingdom falls.

War planning needs a lotta thought.

The descendants of Aunghadhail's Weres ended up appearing among the North American native peoples, and the Avalonia terrain had welded itself to Greenland as Pangea was being built, so maybe the Verdant Isles were on the northern flank of that Eastern Front?

Then again, kingdoms and empires need not be contiguous, or make sense.

It seems that the Queen of the West got her armies, crippling and alienating the Emerald Lands/Verdant Isles in the process. It could have happened weeks or centuries before the Sundering (Court Sidhe seem to have been very long-lived). Sometimes when people want something badly, badly is how they get it - and all the joy of it to them for the trouble.

Bujold, in Shards of Honor wrote: The really unforgivable acts are committed by calm men in beautiful green silk rooms, who deal death wholesale, by the shipload, without lust, or anger, or desire, or any redeeming emotion to excuse them but cold fear of some pretended future. But the crimes they hope to prevent in that future are imaginary. The ones they commit in the present — they are real.

The battle lines having pressed so close to the gates of Atlantis by the end, it's nigh likely that Ériu's lands - and Albion beside - had already been lost. After a screwing-over like that, the best the refugees could hope for is to be sent to a quick death on the front lines. ("Here's a pike and a bicky or two, good luck soldier!") I'd reckon as many as could evacuated to Tír na nÓg, Ys, and Avalon. (In one canon story, Aunghadhail admitted her title didn't have much weight "Under the Hill", but that her distant cousins might still give Merry shelter.)

Malady wrote: Although, we don't know who's right, and which actions led to the Bastard winning...

I think everyone contributed, and far more enthusiastically then than they'll ever admit to in the after.

If so, I did NOT appreciate enough all the young women I got to hang out with from AJROTC (Ignoring the fact that being on the Rifle Team made me just as much of a jock as the Drill Team members, varsity letter and all.) or any of the clubs I belonged to. :(

A picture of Siobhan lay there, with the words Bastard “child” written on them in that same green marker. The assembled onlookers startled when there was a loud rumble of thunder coming from outside.

I would have expected Fey to blow her top, The Bastard being one of her mortal enemies, in addition to the attack on an innocent child.

  • Characters pass in and out, run into each other. Sometimes they don't see each other for a few days. Like a soap opera, you juggle your characters. The Alpha will appear again. Lucy will drop in and out. just the way it goes with a story with a lot of characters. Duplicity is new, but she will appear more.

  • Yes! I see!

The interesting thing with the Alpha and other outsiders, is that they can get a lot more prep, in less time, than anyone else, due to an abundance of time and possible resources?

... Wait. did the Misfits + Backup just kill all the hunters, and now only Alpha remains??

If so, and the Cloner hasn't had any efficiency improvements, then we have a possibly good estimate of how long it takes to make a Hunter?

Emerald and the others... We don't have enough history or motives or known equipment to make any good guesses on what they're doing?

Although, Doc Tenant and the others... What could they have found out, that they didn't know before, but we knew? Hmm...

  • It's also entirely possible that Emerald has nothing to do with the hunters. As far as the killing of the hunters. They got all the ones that were there, who is to say whether there are or aren't more? They were discovered because they made a trail, but there may be more mutants going missing than were accounted for. Just because the hunters kill mutants, that doesn't mean that they necessarily eat them.

  • With a codename like Duplicity you're not foreshadowing her behavior at all are you? Nah she couldn't be a villain in the forming? Well what else can you say a bully is? A hero? Sometimes a 'hero' can be a bully, but usually not in the long run. After all the hero has far too many people to run after to get fixated on one particular person (generally speaking of course) unless one person makes a habit of attacking a particular hero that is.

  • I fixed the chapter 14 part. It wouldn't let me edit chapter 13.

As for your questions, the Alpha escaped at the end of the battle.
There is a connection between Stefan and Stephanie, but not -quite- what you might think.

The school flag had a green boarder border, and the more… unique students were out and about.

Although at Whateley, there could be a student that small and others who could see them.

Yeah we've been complaining about that especially WRT these posts (I mean things in the fab lab) there is some need IMO to be able to edit any part of what you post somewhere like that.

As for your questions, the Alpha escaped at the end of the battle.
There is a connection between Stefan and Stephanie, but not -quite- what you might think.

Yeah it was somewhat obvious that they hadn't killed the Alpha. We are looking forward to seeing the connection between Stefan and Stephanie. :-p

But my excuse there is that I have written some micro-scenes that inform that situation, and it has been a long time since I read the Riddle of Sappho... Not that I reread it yet!

  • Not really a Star Wars buff, but I did get the reference. It's very fitting to the situation.

And now the question becomes, when did Essy see Star Wars, and what other movies has she watched? Meh. It's random trivia anyway, until it gets relevant.

Lol if Essy mentors Lucy in the mental arts, focusing on her link with Don and then we get more info on where Donnie is!

  • Well, did a quick search in Eire for Movie and Star, and can't find it, but maybe I just missed it. Ah well.

What we do know, is that she's seen Romantic Comedies (Part 23) and scary movies (Part 37).

What's most interesting is her Magic Detection power from Part 23... I dunno if we've seen it again, but it's something for me to keep in mind, against her magical enemies... Not that she has any... Which is interesting in and of itself. A mage without magical enemies...

  • Well I read this since nothing I'm writing is actually moving forward. I'm as finished as I'm going to get on A Boy Named Kelly, and I moved the first chapter over to the WhatIF working section, but people who are not authors apparently can't see it... I do my best to comment on your story directly and I'm going to shut up about me and react to your story!
Babies are great conversation starters... :) Oh and yes unless they are yelling they help soothe the savage beast. Interesting that Essy takes Lucy on a little dream walk and it helps some. Of course some one who is utterly jealous of the fact that they are attracting positive attention has to be paying negative attention to them. Then to tie this in with canon thought as E. E. said in his last story people either react very positively to exemplars or very negatively. I expect that goes double for exemplars. That is that they generally react very positively to other exemplars or very negatively. I imagine that if they thought they ought to end up at the top of the social pyramid or be like a pigeon and fly over and do pigeon stuff then discovering that they a) are not at the top of the social pyramid and b) the statuary moves and is armed with at least a 410 and shoots at flying sh1tters just ruins their story... So of course Essy has to run into at least one mean girl who thought she would be the most beautiful, most popular and most powerful girl... And here comes Essy who is at least as beautiful as Fey, and has a BABY to boot! Can you say the flying sh1tter discovered that it was not flying high enough and something landed on it from above?
