  • Talk about Puppet here!

    ...

So, Puppet's an EX-2, WA-2. What does she warp, I wonder?

Or might that be a spoiler?

  • hmm, isn't this character speculation? that is meant to be located:
    Review Session: Characters

down below the Crystal Hall section in these forums.

though to answer, I have never seen much done with Puppet and her powers.

Oh! ... I just got used to The Quad as general Q&A...

... Is thread moving a capability these forums have?

  • no idea if thread moving is possible for mods/admin, usually it is but forum components of cms' like Joomla it may not be.

and since the Quad is general chat, it can handle a couple of threads that are chat about a character.
It wouldn't hurt to start a thread about puppet there anyway, all canon characters can have a thread so the authors can see where readers interests are, and what ideas they come up with. ( I know I have given one canon author a few ideas that will be incorporated into a story )

Stupidity is a capitol offense, a summary not indictable one.

I think she warps her body, that is how she makes the goop that is her blood and lives.

It's cruel and heartless, like calling someone with glasses four-eyes. That makes it less than perfect.

Nope, cousin of Ayla who he has visited in Hawthorn. And in those stories when he first found out she in there, mentioned her and she has always been female.

    crystalhall.wikia.com/wiki/Puppet Note the picture.

    From Parent's Day www.crystalhall.org/Parents'%20Day.html

Janet checked again, “So you say she’s hooked up to machinery like a person in The Matrix, and her blood is green and poisonous?”
Phase nodded, “That’s why her codename is Puppet.”
    “Yuck.”

Well, the picture is by DrunkFu, who is/was a canon author. But the picture might have been done before he ascended to canon, so its canon status is debatable.

Still... it's just a *book*. A very well-known children's book. Are we seriously debating the canonicity of Melissa having *read Pinnochio?*

  • We would need the canon author who came up with Puppet in the first place to tell us why she has it. Never revealed in the stories and could have multiple reasons for why it was chosen. From several of the current posted theories, to some other reason.

How about we talk about stuff we would like to see involving Puppet, like if the Nimbus plot involving Ayla's younger brother will come to fruition or if something will happen to disrupt it? Poor Puppet was the 1st victim of whatever his plans are, Ayla the 2nd. Will there be a 3rd and thus another Goodkind disowned and sent to live with their sister and to Whateley or will the plot be stopped in time?

Puppet is mentioned before the Ayla stories but she only appears in the stories with Ayla POV. Reading all of the Ayla's stories (The later Trevor James Goodkind is first, the rest are all titled Ayla and The ________. All written by Diane Castle.) will take a long time and is well worth it.

But she doesn't have more than a dozen or two lines of dialog out of all the thousands of words involved. We are overdoing it discussing her so much.

And Sir Lee: We were arguing whether or not her name was self-deprecating vs passive aggressive meanness. The DrunkFu picture means nothing to me since she doesn't appear in any of his stories that I recall.

Umm...you do realize that the Whateley Academy universe is a collaborative effort, don't you? That means the canon authors communicate about all of their stories. So I wouldn't just write off something Drunkfu did (if it was done while he was a canon author) just because it focuses on a character that isn't his.

And because it is a collaborative work, anyone can step up and write Puppet as a pov character, giving us a back story that ties correctly into canon which if done well could become canon.

  • The problem is that since the character is primarily written by Diane, I don't think any of us really want to adopt her as POV, since she's really tied into the whole deal with Ayla's change and Ayla's story.

Note in what I've done so far, I'm NOT doing Fey POV or TLW POV stories with Kayda; I'm bringing them in as side characters. In the same way, I MIGHT someday do 'Puppet as a side-character', but I won't write Puppet POV. I don't think any of us will.

She could still be conventionally transgender.

Or here's an idea. Puppet is actually a puppet. She went into a coma during her manifestation and has never come out of it; Nimbus is just pulling her strings with dark magic.

Was he a canon author when the image was drawn?

  • Do the doctors know if Puppet actually needs her life support system? That is, do they know if she still needs her any organs other than her brain?

Also, given that her blood has changed, since her brain still works, doesn't that mean her brain changed in someway to allow it to still keep working?

Also, how human-blood-like is her blood, anyways? I'm not expecting a detailed chemical breakdown or anything, although that'd be awesome!

Just, is her blood, blood enough for magic to say "This is Similar to Puppet"?

I mean like analyzing her biochemistry and stuff to check things like if her blood is an oxygen carrier or something.

... Do we even know if she got powers testing? I guess not? That would suck if I'm right. .... Could get a micro-scene out of it though.

  • I think it was Static Girl, not Frostbite. But same thing.

Anyway... I'm pretty sure that it's canon that her heart stopped pumping. Even if her blood can carry oxygen, it won't work if it's not moving.

My guess, given what was revealed about Nimbus, is that Puppet was an attempt of melding something non-human (Class X?) into an human. It wasn't... entirely successful: some parts of her body changed more than others -- her brain adapted to the new biochemistry, but her heart didn't.

So, if your assumption is true, then growing the lost organs, but made in line with her new biochem would give her new organs? ... But, given that those organs might be X-Class material, then that might not be a good idea.

... Under that hypothesis, could Kayda cure her? And by consequence or whatever, Ayla as well?

  • With the new materials developed by MD and friends, and the increased robustness and safetyof her equipment, what thoughts might be given to developing a mobile / portable version of her life-support systems? Something the size of a shopping cart (or smaller), that - with HER in MOPP--4 equivalent gear - would allow her to get up and move about?

Side bar: Assigning students to clean spilled toxins in her room as part of a detention - and then walk down the hall to the cleaning closet to dump the (open!) bucket and mop - has always leaned REAL HARD on my 'willing suspension of disbelief', even beyond taking along a student to carry out repairs to the seals of a Class X portal - while wearing a suicide charge, no less! Any situation requiring CBW protective gear to prevent rapid death is NOT something to be handled by stupid 14yo teenagers!

  • I don't believe that Puppet's gear is down to a portable size yet, nor hardened against Antenna, Glitch, or any of the other energizers out there. What she has now is much better than before, and I am sure she is on the list for more upgrades, but there are others with problems to solve.

First, who said it was an open bucket?

Second, Jade was doing her job, and she had a release from her "parent" that basically absolved the School from all responsibility from placing her in danger.

Third, you are worried about the possible contamination from a diluted bucket of poison, but want the girl producing the poison to wander around virtually unprotected? MOPP gear is good at keeping stuff out, not so good at keeping stuff in. Even if she wore a fully sealed bubble type suit, they aren't all that cut proof, especially against the sort cutters Whateley has. Aquerna could easily puncture or shread such a suit accidentally with her nails.

True. However, I did say "develop", not merely "put what she has on wheels." There would have to be a LOT of devisor-level work done.

First, who said it was an open bucket?

There was already a bucket and mop against one wall, and the bucket was full of a nasty-looking yellow cleaning agent.
I took the bucket of toxic waste out, and I poured it down the bio-hazard chute.
(Ayla 4: Ayla and the Tests ch3)
No particular mention of lid or seals by detail-monster Ayla (or Diane!), so I have to assume it's just a bucket.

Second, Jade was doing her job, and she had a release from her "parent" that basically absolved the School from all responsibility from placing her in danger.

There is such a thing as disclosure and reasonable apprehension of risk. If I sign a permission form for my daughter to go on a school ski trip, I am acknowledging that this is a potentially dangerous activity that can lead to injury or even death. I am *NOT* expecting her to be geared up and inserted with a SWAT entry team into a crack house!

Third, you are worried about the possible contamination from a diluted bucket of poison, but want the girl producing the poison to wander around virtually unprotected? Fair enough; my comment of "MOPP-4 equivalent gear" wasn't well defined. I DID intend that the barrier layers be directed inwards to prevent egress, vs normal CW gear that prevents ingress. I do agree that it would have to be at least lightly armoured against punctures and tears, and the electricals and electronics hardened against the sort of threats you mention.

“I had it written as broadly as possible,” he explained, “since I wasn’t sure what Amelia was up to, then I forwarded the information through to Zenith. I’m hoping that I can trust you to act responsibly, and not endanger yourself recklessly.”

    later

“You’re right,” Morrie said. “Don’t even fool around with it. Believe me, you’ll know if you ever need it.” He seemed to gather his breath. “Look, last week, I wasn’t going to let you even come close to this job. But a new permit came through on your work forms, authorizing you for ‘any and all risks necessary’ for your job. Stan and I have been talking about it, and … you could really help out.

You are right that a permission slip to go skiing would cover any potential dangers normally found on a ski slope. Jade's "permission" slip is a bit broader than that. Now legally, even if it had been signed by her father, it wouldn't have a leg to stand on, but then again who is going to be the adult for Jade? She doesn't have one.

Any situation requiring CBW protective gear to prevent rapid death is NOT something to be handled by stupid 14yo teenagers!

I would agree if we were talking about unsupervised teenagers, but this is happening just a few stories above Foob's pool, so I doubt they're unsupervised.

  • On the idea of getting Puppet out of her room, in some manner... A tech solution is out, but...

Could she learn to Astral Project, possibly from Foob teaching her and then control an artificial body or something? So, her new body is a Puppet? ... Honestly, I like the idea 'cause it makes her name Double Meaning.

Could use that Psi Booster Crown, if she needs more power... Unlikely that Tennyo would give it to her for that?

... Interesting how her blood killed most of her internal organs, but not her brain, muscles, or nerves?

IIRC, Jade, when she was projecting Jann into her skin, could perceive some forms of magic sigils, such as the protective wards around the hazard site. Would she be able to see any other magical effects, and, should she be taking the Psychic Arts/Magic Arts basic curriculum, so she can understand what she is perceiving?

  • She would first have to admit to someone that she can see magic.

And this part of the discussion has drifted a bit from Puppet.

Eh. GSD is weird. This is confirmed fact. I don't know enough about human biology to venture a guess as to how this particular trick was managed. Maybe something involving the blood-brain barrier?

  • -shivers- I am suddenly wondering if Puppet will end up looking like Mutagen Man.

  • So I'm rereading Ayla and the Late Trevor James Goodkind.

It occurs, or rather reoccurs, that there might be a simple explanation for why Uncle Theo is both "someone to watch out for" and also the one acting rationally, calmly, and not terrified or freaked out about Trevor's situation.

He's Puppet's father. Gracie didn't know what happened to Melissa, just that she "vanished." Probably nobody in the family knew the truth. She thinks he did something to his own daughter, that's why Gracie doesn't trust him.

In fact, he's so calm, mostly helpful (even if he still helped drug and drag Ayla), and not afraid because this isn't half as bad as what happened to Melissa.

Ok, so: The only issue is it was never actually confirmed why Theo acted like that nor who Melissa's dad was, only that her mother was a Thruber. She's referred to as Cousin Melissa. Could be a second or third cousin... or she could be just Theo's daughter.

Sadly, while I'm sure we can find more specific evidence of all this, unless Diane comes back or left notes about it which TINCC is willing/able to share, we'll never know for certain. It seems like the easiest fit and explanation however.

  • Her relationship could be even more complex than that. FEX my nieces and nephew call my cousin and her husband Aunt and Uncle... Now my cousin is 6 years older than me, so this makes sense in one way...
