Question Kayda

Just to start the forum out with a question that's burning in people's minds...

What form of cruelty should I unleash on Kayda next?

Well, if you want a response, I'll give it. Give her a perfectly normal day where nothing happens; her brain won't be able to handle it, and her head will explode.

She has to work with the Grunts during a training run?

Not sure how she feels about the U.S. Army/Military.

I'm just selfish and looking for a reason/way to torture Whisper.

or...

She's forced to watch a Washington Redskin's football/Atlanta Braves baseball game.

Okay, kinda lame.

or...

Oct 2007, deal with Halloween costumes. She should be forced to wear a costume completely opposite of who she is, like a blond cheerleader.

I would suggest a bit of tension wit the gearheads as she working on her vehicle. The actions of others wanting to have it modified beyond what she desires. The misunderstandings of those wishing to help but can't help their own perception of what it should be. Or a form of hazing she has to endure like many do in order to be 'initiated' into the fold.

Demon snake eats her family. Debra dies in a superhero fight. Punch, Charge and Headrush killed in a shuttle bus crash. And while all this happens on the same day, she's off having a fantastic time with Lanie and Kodiak.

Can I suggest allowing Domoviye and Elrod to get together to 'torture' a character might leads to levels of torture not seen since Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany where asked to stop doing things like that in the mid 1940's

How about them visiting a fun house created by a Divsor? As right now its along the lines of being Halloween then a good fright night might be in order. A villain who subjects his guests to mindless torture for the fun of it. Well in his/her eyes only. Makeshift contraptions that changes the appearance of the guests, along with mindless mayhem to the mind as it tries to alter their perception.

Just a thought.

A camping trip over a weekend in the woods around the campus. And have them encounter some of the creatures that wander around the area, including a few that come out of the sewers at night. We really haven't seen what kind of horrors and abominations live on or near the campus, just a few mentions in other stories and the fact that anything Jobe makes which isn't eaten by Sara is probably still loose.

Something involving Wondercute.

A few relatively mild ones (since there's not much that could compete with that May weekend) and a silly one:

a) Someone or something ruins her buckskin dress, sending her into a sulk for a couple of days (even though it probably wouldn't take long to order a replacement and get it despatched with next day delivery)

b) She encounters a militant vegan (let's face it, even in the Whateleyverse, PETA are still likely to exist) who will not shut up about killing poor, defenceless animals etc. etc.

c) Sewer detention.

d) Someone drugs her and persuades her to manifest Tatanka. He is not a very happy bison...

e) She ends up sitting next to Josie Gillman in Powers Theory, and gets her leg entangled in Josie's bag (or somethign similar). Josie falls asleep and forgets to carry a 1, just as something disrupts the relevant wards...

How about she has a positive experience with a penis and has her entire lesbian world view thrown into question?

Well if that's the case then perhaps PETA should get on Kayda about having a Bison for a pet, even if it is magical. Thus we would have someone for the ethical treatment of imaginary friends.

Or how about Kayda wakes up to find everything she has done is nothing but a dream and that she has to relive the whole experience again like in Groundhog Day.

PETA/PETIF might have its work cut out for them... when beings like Tatanka and Rythax are able to speak in a very articulate manner (Rythax, in particular, is by career a diplomat) and argue convincingly that they don't WANT those yahoos meddling into their trans-species friendship, thank you very much. Pern and Cabbit might make the PETA/PETIF militants look even more stupid, when it comes out that technically neither of the alleged "victims of human exploitation" even *exists* -- Pern is a manifestation, and Cabbit is a stuffed toy animated by whatever Jade wants to reveal.

Ah, but that's never stopped the demented ones from wanting to help the helpless or push their agenda on those that 'they' feel the need to. Whether its wanted or not they will keep on pushing until all members become like those they wish to protect. Well at least put on the most endangered species I'm sure.

Actually that does sound like a dilemma for Kayda. She is now the Shaman for her tribe and as such would be required to perform certain acts and rituals befitting her tribe. This could be seen as a way for those who seek to control her into having her make a decision for the betterment of her tribe and how she needs to represent them.

Actually, that's ONE possibility. Another goes the opposite direction, with Kayda perhaps feeling that Debra is a little too careless - having Galahad's syndrome and needlessly exposing herself to danger. A third would be that Kayda gets too dependent on Debra.

There are a LOT of ways to play this. We'll have to see how it works out.
Meanwhile, to write Kayda's combat final ....

I thought she already went through those kind of thoughts and was talked out of them, by Debra, her mother and friends. Plus it was the dream-walking so deeply with Debra that created a powerful spiritual and emotional bond between them. Anything which tries to sever it could harm both Kayda and Debra in various ways. Look at what happened when Debra thought Laine was trying to take Kayda from her. A real threat would be someone using emotion manipulation powers on one or both of them to mess with their relationship for their own ends. And I've just given a horribly cruel idea to elrod now.

Hey you asked for turmoil and anguish, so I hit the end spectrum of all of ones fears.

Guess I delivered also. But no I would never want you to do such a thing to her.

Sounds like a horrible nightmare for the two of them also.

With everything that she has gone through, I would actually give her until summer break with no problems, let the healing started with the recognition of her 2 spirit nature have time to stabilize her emotionally. If she is pushed to much she will become a truly mentally unstable character, which is counter to the role she should be fulfilling.

While the stress of being tortured makes for great stories, the long term development of the character needs to be taken into account and peaceful times are needed for the healing and replenishment they offer.

So I read Dawnfyre's passionate plea for peace and calm, and I immediately imagine a calm, peaceful zen garden, Kayda attempting to calmly practice meditation, and the slow drip, drip of Chinese water torture.

Before the school year ends, have her brother show up with her parents to visit at Whateley. Have one of the Three Little Witches see her brother and get a crush, see chaos ensue. Especially when her brother and the TLW begin to ask Kayda advice about the other.

Hmmm.. to get back on topic (somewhat), Let's go for a two-fer, Kayda and Adalie. Danny meets Amilie, and the pair falls in luuuuuuuuuve. As such, little brother becomes the ultimate pain in the ass over this. Because, honestly, little siblings doing that is far more torture then it sounds.

This is when I most miss the EVIL and TWISTED emoticons! I have plans. You may or may not have hit upon elements of those plans, but the first of two major Kayda stories is about half written. And it may or may not address one or two of your points. And I have a couple of zingers in the mix for you. So, yeah. It's going to be a fun end-of-semester and summer :

Bearclaw's contact was off campus, who had the actual on campus contact, and Speakeasy was the native that was going to far in chasing Kayda off campus.

Kayda will likely have to face him in her combat final.

Magic Mikey was the on campus agent working for Dan Bearclaws. Speakeasy was a separate plot which Bearclaws would have had his agent work to stop, if Magic Mikey hadn't gone nuts due to the tainted spike he had Apathy steal for him.

If someone tried to diagram out the entirety of the plots against Kayda, by the end they'd be channelling John Madden.

We are all just in shock that while unconscious in Doyle, a group of Native American Ninjas didn't try to kill her.

Granted, we do have the Native American group using advanced notice me not spells, but they are hardly ninjas. Still, we haven't seen guys from either Deville or the Yama Dojo going after her, and obviously that needs to happen.

We haven't seen them because they are Ninjas.

I did quite enjoy Medicine Girl because she's 'recovered' and is being a functional person again.

Actually I don't see what he's complaining about. He has enough material to write a steamy novel of two love sick birds trying to open a brothel outside of the academy to keep us entertained for a number of weeks if not months.

I mean, a skimpy buckskin outfit worn around campus to entice a bunch of hormonal enraged mutants (her's included). If that isn't enough to cause a riot I don't know whats become of him And his bison. Please lets not go there also. A three ring circus with whips and chains. What more can any rage induced kid want? As with guards, teachers and whatnot.

How much more can you do to her? Put her in a cage with a pole in the middle. Think about it.

Actually, if Kayda is given enough peace to heal herself, and develop her skills, then she is in a much better position to have some truly horrendous things come after her. Figure the previous stuff is a level 2, a bit of healing and growth and you can start hitting her with level 5 stuff.

Note (and I HAVE thought about this rather extensively), this wasn't a MAJOR mythos spell. It took EVERYTHING Kayda had and then a lot more. It was definitely very involved and time-consuming, so it is not battle-worthy. And Kayda emerged from this battered in the astral world; no telling how much has spilled into the real world.

Could she have undone the mind-slave spell? Don't know. We can speculate but until TINCC and I deal with that in a canon story, it's pure speculation. And I would nudge the speculation toward "hell no" because the mind-slave spell is a much bigger spell.

I agree with you. It's useful, it's nice to have someone who can do this, but it's not going to be a game breaker anytime soon. If she could have removed all the taint in one go that would be a bit different, but until she can do it on the fly in combat, it's fair.

I know she isn't op at this time.

That is true of any character, Elrod could write Sharpie and make him OP.

Bad Astrodragon, we don't want her to be arrested on a murder charge again. Because if that happened. Tatanka would probably kill the guy before it was over, especially if he attacked Kayda to try and get him.

Heh, I got the idea in my head of the guy after Kermit the Frog for his restaurant when you mentioned the Bob's Buffalo Burgers agent. Crazy and never giving up to get him, even breaking the law and endangering lives to do so. One thing I've been thinking about, is that with her Ex-2, Wiz-2, Tatanka, and native american weapons (including her knife) Kayda is already rather versatile, provided she doesn't run out of essence, she has shields, invisibility, limited flight, healing, and explosive arrows, its hard to imagine where that Gadgeteer 5 will come into play, especially considering that she has a "theme". I have a hard time seeing Kayda as the Power Armor type, at least not a bulky form of it, as it could interfere with her other talents, an improved quiver/bow/arrows sure, they wont interfere with accessing the medicine bag, maybe a light power frame, to enhance mobility, as something she could integrate traditional Lakota garb into, enhancements to the combat effectiveness of the tomahawks possibly, but again, I have a hard time imagining what would fit, I look forward to finding out of course, but I doubt we will see anything "as clumsy or random as a blaster" or heavy power armor, and BFGs, though I'm not sure about the lightsaber route either,

On another front, I lost the outline I had for Kayda's summer adventure; I was going to write a bit on that to take a break from Gen 2 story 3, but I couldn't find the outline on my computer. Bummer. Major bummer. So I have to recreate it. On the bright side, I got a lot of Danny suggestions that are being incorporated, so it should be better. On the down side, now that Ayla and Jade are going to France, too, I have to come up with some serious insanity for Jade to participate in - to the befuddlement of the HGB and the French MCO. Sigh. I had some really good, angsty stuff there, too. Sniffle.

If it makes you feel any better, you're in good company. I was testing some code with a pictures yesterday. Then I switched to using a different picture as my test case, and when I tried to go back to the first picture it was gone. I'm not crazy - my computer remembered that I had been using it, but couldn't find it. I searched the recycle bin and my files, with no luck whatsoever. I just up and vanished on me.

Fortunately in my case, it wasn't a particularly important picture. But it's disappearance is still rather bizarre.

Here in Brazil popular belief is that Saint Longinus (pronounced "São Longuinho") is the one you pray to in order to find lost stuff. Saint Anthony is the one single girls pray to to get husbands. But I digress...

Arcanist Lupus, the best tool I know of to find files in your HD is Search Everything ( www.voidtools.com ) -- assuming, that is, that you use a Windows machine and have administrative powers over it.
More than once I found files that were in the wrong folder by attempting some sort of wildcard search on the filename.

I have to suspect that Tatanka's stipulation for wearing the body armor is that it's design helps him pull off the Mr T look...

I have backups, but I could not locate the file in the mess - it was SUPPOSED to be in a Kayda directory, but it got mis-saved, and hence I couldn't find it. It was mis-filed in the backups, too, so that did no good.

including the boarder hoop, the boarder hoop is the tricky part, Kayda isn't a devisor so she cant do the bigger on the inside trick (well she can with magic, but that's besides the point), boarder hoop could function as a easy repack element, where most webshots its easier to replace it than it is to repack. trick would be all the precision work, even if the hoop wasn't fully ridged (really it couldn't be, has to get around the target). you would still have a lot of tiny motors or some other mechanic to wind it all back up, still, it would be very useful, maybe not so much as the electric web Debra used on Phase, but its advantage would be that you don't have to replace it after each use so you could use it more often, another trick would be with the webbing material, unlike other webshots, it has to stand up to repeated use, and it still has to be able to compress the same, and that's just with the radial strings, then there's the circular strings that have to expand and contract while still staying strong... And at the end of the day, if it gets too bulky, it's problematic, so on the nodes where the radial and circular strings intercept, maybe having replaceable netting anchored on, looking like beads when deployed, using a more stretchy option than the main strands (which could be titan wire)...

I'll admit it, I'm addicted to tech/inventor type fictional characters, particularly those that I don't already have a good idea of what they will make, Tony Stark is cool but too predictable "Ahh I see you made a new suit with a powersource that makes no logical sense AGAIN, oh cool humanoid robots, how impractical, though slightly more practical than the armor itself" , and the Star Wars tech types only make new things to further the plot, but web fiction tech types, I have a vast expanse to speculate for...

I've been debating how to get Kayda back to Whateley - does Lanie come out and they have a road-trip (which would probably include Tansy) or do they fly and then take the train? I've got advantages I can see both ways.

I hadn't even thought about something happening during the travel.

Regarding how she deal with Danny, she still is a teenager. A more mature teenager than most I would think because she has been exposed to a lot of thing, but still a teenager. I don't think it would be out of character to have her go overboard at first and then only after a specific event realize that she should ease up on him. In a way it depends on how Danny is handling thing, if from the get go she sees/realizes that he has a lot of problem dealing with his situation even in Poe, or with his interaction with the rest of the students, then I don't think she would really be too hard on him.

The purpose of siblings is to tease/annoy each other. The other purpose of siblings is to defend each other. So it would be entirely plausible for Kayda to tease Danny, especially inside Poe, and stand up for him against outside bullying etc. But not to much.

The purpose of siblings isn't to tease each other, it's to annoy each other.

You don't need to tease to annoy. Just the presence of a sibling can annoy. A sibling moving into an area the other considers 'theirs' is an annoyance. A sibling can turn the emotions of the other from happiness to fury just by their very presence in a sanctuary of the other.

A habit of a sibling can be annoying, not because it's meant to be annoying, just because it annoys the other sibling. A sibling can rile up the other with a sniff, a gesture, a shake of the head, especially if a coverted friend responds facourably to something that enrages them.

The most innocent seeming of words can cut like steel, simply from the years and years of shared meaning and events behind it.

There is just layers and layers of potential issues were a younger sibling pushes into the 'space' of an older one, especially when they start invading precious sanctums and friendships of the older sibling.

Nah, we only think things haven't worked out the way Wakan Tanka had originally planned. As the story plays out, we'll see something like this:

Kayda, Bugs, and Lanie get a bit carried away in the Workshop and accidentally strand Kayda in the middle of a road on June 5th, 1980 -- without her clothes or spirits. An oncoming car tries to swerve out of the way but still hits her before striking a tree. The driver, a seventeen year old girl named April, dies in the accident, and Kayda spends the next two weeks in a coma as her healing ability burns itself out repairing the damage and partially undoing the transformation Wakan Tanka had imposed. She's still female, but she doesn't recognize her face upon waking up. Or remember her name. The nurse asks her what she wants to be called. The girl sees a calendar. The month is June. That resonates with her for some reason. June it is! As she finishes recuperating and it becomes clear her memory isn't coming back anytime soon, April's parents -- a rancher and a Lakota medicine woman -- offer to take June in until her own family can be located. They adopt her a year later, around the same time they take on a strapping young farmhand by the name of Pete Franks...

And yes, they're fun.

So... This is a Kayda story, so Kayda's gotta play some part. And there's gonna be Angst somewhere... Background Angst? Kayda making someone else Angsty? Kayda sorting out someone else's Angst? ... Danny's Angst, perhaps...

Some teasing of Danny, is highly likely? Well, I think he can handle it? Kayda's had worse and been able to bounce back with her spirits helping. Danny has equivalent help and more, and can likely do the same?

No more angst. The Melancholy though is going up to 11.

Angst is okay. Suicidal angst that never seems to give up and occasionally hits too close to home for readers and authors? That's when we got grumbly. But she's past that, so all is forgiven.

Angst about getting stuck on a problem with the car, and then Lanie still not quite having her mojo back making Kayda feel bad for being the indirect cause? Good angst. Losing a boat race to some rich, sexist, cheating prep school jerks? Good angst.

Absinthe is a Freshman, and Kayda is a Junior, so I don't see why they would room together. Besides Kayda has a roommate already. I don't see any problems otherwise. They are both Wiz's, nothing wrong there.

So I'm reading through Kayda 3 and I notice her commenting on Anna walking with a boy who "Must be the boyfriend" or something. I don't have the exact quote. Basically, she reacts as though she'd never seen the two together before, and hadn't met Jerry at all.

She met Anna, and Jerry, in Dunwich just before the attack. Anna even properly introduced him and everything.

Does this mean the fight with the snake demon caused brain damage or memory loss and nobody noticed?

I mean really, giving honest answers is just downright criminal. It's in the author handbook! NEVER admit to mistakes! EVER! All mistakes are really just part of some grand master plan us poor readers will never truly comprehend and have a perfectly logical and reasonable and rational explanation that has nothing to do with the author making a mistake.

Hey we have some ideas planned for one or two characters that don't involve torture and mayhem.
Maybe a bit of suicide, but only a little

There is a list, it's just when we finished it and thought about giving it to you, for some reason the words 'challenge accepted!' rang in our ears, so we summoned a being from the greater depths to take the list and hide it in its realms.

Is Kayda's gadgeteering generally focused on cars and fabrication only?

Or is she shying away from the more creative things because she's focused on magic for now, or even still a little guilty about Lanie losing her generalized skills?

I know it is a bit early in her actual years of experience at Whateley, but I'd love to see her surprise someone in the arenas thinking they'd only have to deal with tomahawks, arrows, magic, and an ornery bison...before getting laid low by a souped up pistol or maybe even a trap of some sort.

I still think she should build a sonic weapon that fires highly-compelling pre-recorded math problems.

I'm not so sure about that. The Trickster revealed that Brandon would have come to Whateley and encountered Lanie, ending up marrying her. There was no mention of it being due to being a mage, from what I remember, it was based on his Gadgeteering ability. Since he wouldn't have had the additional duties as the Ptesanwi, he would have had more time to explore his gadgeteering. What without having to constantly train in skills needed for defeating Class X entities. It was Wakan Tanka that put her on the Shaman path. Brandon might have gone that route anyhow, but who knows?

Officially Kayda is Wizard - 2, Gadgeteer-5, Exemplar-2, Avatar-5, and has made a patentable item, in the machining mill, if she concentrated on her gadgeteering ability more, who knows what sorts of things she could build?

I think it's highly likely that Brandon was an Avatar as well as a gadgeteer, at the very least. Possibly with some Exemplar thrown in. That would have landed him at Whateley anyway, if Wakan Tanka hadn't got greedy and decided to take Brandon for herself instead of just directing some likely spirit towards him.
