  • Okay, so we were talking announcement and discussion, and the thread is becoming what this one's title says - speculation about the Whateleyverse in Gen 2. So - have at it.

I bet that - Whateley has been moved to Vermont! By space aliens. And huge spaceships with tractor beams :silly:

No, we changed that, remember?

We decided they were just going to kidnap half of the student body instead, turning them into super-powered half-mole slaves to bolster their army with in preparation for taking over the world. B)

  • I get the feeling that the Gen Two authors were all bursting from having to stay silent about Gen Two and are now giddy with release ...

Alternatively they are mad as hatters ... Wait, what? They are normally like this?

OK, nothing to see here then, move along, move along.

Yes. By the way, the best Gen2 speculation is on Elrod finally coming clean about Locutus, the borg in his closet.

I have it on very good authority that Ito is the headmaster and Eldritch is second in command. They're the only ones that survived Gen 1.

  • That sinking feeling when you realize your plot ideas have the instant approval of the author and creator of Kayda.

Neo is feeling this now. Let us pray for him, and for his character, for the implications are most dire!

I'm not so sure there, Dom. I seem to recall you were rather shocked at what I did to Kota in your Fate Sucks story, so you know I can at least compare with you. :P

I've had two main characters killed in the second last chapters of their stories. One of them was beheaded in front of his pregnant girlfriend, and the other was a teen mom gunned down while holding her baby.

  • There's an invasion of Potter fans, either demanding to book the simulators on a weekly basis for Quidditch tournaments or nagging the Devisors to build them flying broomsticks. An expy of a certain diminutive fanfic character is cast as the Snitch.

More probable is that AJG Consolidated is a large multinational, but seldom heard of outside investor circles as by then it'll largely be a holding company, with the companies / products it owns retaining their branding. All the 'traditional' cottages will have been extended, and will be connected to the tunnel network. Some of the above-ground teaching facilities may have been redesigned and/or extended. Among the more conventional subjects on the curriculum, the head of the art department will no doubt leave a lasting impression on her students, and on the walls may be a parody of Paramount's portrait (we know students have to pay it a visit, but what about staff?). Within Poe Cottage, "Kimba" may be a synonym for craziness, although of course no-one (other than Bella if she's still the House Parent) will have met the Kimbas themselves - their most prominent escapades may have passed into legend, and the details as recounted bearing little resemblance to reality.

Am I the only one who's mildly disturbed that Malady jumped to TEEN PREGNANCY from comments about two female characters?

Um no. Given its Whateley, devisors and whatnot the only thing I would find strange is if they had a day where 'nothing' strange happened. But then that would be a strange occurrence in itself.

Now about that coffee pot. It wasn't empty, it was housing Ito's essence for a rainy day and wants it back.

What is - was. What was - is.

I thought Invictus was a guy... The codename just feels masculine to me... All Roman and meaning 'Unconquerable'... Gender Bias-thing at work?

I totally missed her real name, "Tanya Wright". I was just scanning like: "Neomagus, Neomagus... There! Invictus!" and I guess "your mother's replacement" wasn't a big enough hint.

EDIT: So, Neo, is your Purple-Hair Girl Forum Pic supposed to be Invictus, like how Elrod and Astrodragon have what is obviously their characters as their profile pic? Well, yes, it makes sense to assume that it is, but it's not true for everyone, and I wouldn't want to assume.

Actually, yes, Malady. My avatar pic IS supposed to be Invictus, although it's a year or two down the line from what her appearance is at the start of the 2016 school year. B)

I'm gonna bet 'No' or maybe 'Yes'? 'Cause that doesn't look like a "Luke Del Bosque" to me... But then again... You're "taking tropes and smashing them to teeny tiny bits… then smashing the bits into powder" so I'm gonna Subversions and Zig-zagged Tropes, so I'm not gonna make a stable bet, 'cause it could be that he... or she or whatever, so that might actually be "Luke Del Bosque"... and doesn't pick a girl's name for some reason... Or it is a girl, but has a constant illusion of a guy who registers as "Luke Del Bosque"...

Meaning the name could mean anything for your concept and the avatar is of your character. Or you are messing with those who think the avatar is of your character and it isn't of your character. Either way you get to mess with our heads until Luke appears in a story. Cheeky little devil

No, no, no, that's not Nagrij's character, that's his muse. You know, the one that he's claimed has the biggest case of ADHD this side of the Punic Wars. I'm guessing the truth is finally coming out... or he preformed some forbidden muse ritual to keep her on task for more than 1 story.

Come to think of it, I never took Latin, but I do think that "-us is a male suffix, and the corresponding female suffix would be "-a"; therefore, the feminine form of "Invictus" is probably "Invicta." But I'm not really sure, I would have to find someone who really understands this stuff.

But, even if I'm correct, there might be a good in-story reason for that. Or maybe it will be an in-joke, with other characters constantly pointing this out to her on being introduced. I'll have to wait and see.

    yahoo answers gives:

    invicta
Roma invicta multas provincias habet = unvanquished Rome has many provinces. The Latin noun "Roma" is feminine and singular and "invicta" has to agree in gender and number with "Roma" and also be feminine and singular. The noun "Roma" is also in the nominative case, used here for the subject of the verb "habet" (has). So "invicta" is the feminine singular nominative form of "invictus".

  • My Brother theoretically learned Latin while going to the Lady Margaret Roper Academy in Fort Worth, and he agrees that the correct feminine form would be Invicta. Of course, that doesn't mean that Invictus knows that. Good thing neither Ayla or Jadis is likely to run into her.

Well, not that many, but some for sure. For starters, most Astérix fans... yeah, I know it's not that popular in the U.S., but there are a lot of Europeans at Whateley. Catholic clergy would sure notice. The better class of Romance-language teachers who bothered to learn a bit about Latin. A few biologists who spend way too much time thinking about how to name newly discovered species. Fans of the Rome TV series. Roman History buffs in general. Philip José Farmer fans who bothered to decypher the bilingual puns in his Aquila series. Whateley students who chose a poor student codename (case in point: Quickie) and are doing a lot of research to get the perfect adult codename.

My point being, none of these groups is huge, but when you add all of them together, you get maybe... 2% of the Whateley population at least? That's one in fifty; how long do you think you could go before running into one of them? There are enough of them to notice that there is something odd about the name that I think it would get pointed out pretty soon, I think.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

I'm really looking forward to your character, in part because I want to see how similar he is to one of my powerset ideas, which goes by the codename Steadfast.

What if Jade and Thuban are single-handedly responsible for Japan's change in stance on mutation?

  • Jade is a "Devisor", not a gadgeteer. But yes, I could see her being very popular in Japan. Probably not enough to cause a shift singlehandedly, though.

I don't know where anyone got the idea that Japan is anti-mutant, or was ever anti-mutant.
Japan is NOT anti-mutant. Period and stop. So little has been defined about Japan that any and all speculation or discussion that it IS full of mutophobes is in error. Regardless of whether Jade goes there or not, Japan is especially friendly to gadgeteers.

  • Jade is actually neither a devisor or a gadgeteer. she only pretends to be one as a means of hiding how her abilities really work.

However, she is also going to live a very long time, is very intelligent and has the very envied ability to be able to study multiple subjects 24/7. She may not be a gadgeteer... in the sense that she will never intuit in the traditional gadgeteer fashion some completely unique theory or application of science without the leadup progression to it... BUT, she may be uniquely positioned to be the next best thing. Collecting and studying the various theories of many different gadgeteers without the psychological limitations of needing to create on demand or being bound to a specialization. Sure, she may have to pay to use someone else's 'patents' but she may end up putting tech together and making advances on things that were originally intuited by a gadgeteer.

  • Really the only canonical evidence we, the readers, have to support the theory of Japan being anti-mutant is the limited representation in Gen 1 (I can name Hatamoto of the Golden Kids, and Yama Dojo, but that's it).

Considering that none of the stories yet released even take place near Japan, this "under-representation" is entirely justified, I feel.

Back to the subject of Gen 2 though, it's certainly interesting having a mix of protagonists from more varied places in the world, what with their potential to fill things in and flesh the wider world out a little more, in the eyes of us readers.

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

  • She doesn't have to pretend very much, look at her general attitude to problem solving and creation. There are very few people who doubt the fact that she is a gadgeteer or devisor because of how focused she is on technology based solutions. Multiple times throughout both her and other characters stories people who know she isn't a gadgeteer or devisor have asked if everyone was sure that she was not. Similarly people who did not know the secret would remark on how she must one.

Yep. Ie, _no_ information to say one way or the other Japan's status pro or non pro mutant, or why.

Gen 2 gives a LOT more information in NYCWC P1 and P2 about Japan and the UK, for example.

Considering that none of the stories yet released even take place near Japan, this "under-representation" is entirely justified, I feel.

Yeeep. Will change though, and I'll be deeply amused.

However, I'll give a hint: Japan is the land of Shinto. And in Whateley, Shinto is a bit more powerful and respected.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

The Wiki lists also Akemi Hori, Carapace, Gundam and Gunkan among the students, and two martial arts teachers: Kasai Tetsuko and Ito. Although Ito is a baseline, and AFAIK Kasai is also a baseline.

Not many, granted, but a bit more than that just Hatamoto.

    also consider two more things:
1 Japan has a culture where individuals are not only encouraged but expected to push themselves to the limit in the name of progress, be it technological, athletic, or economic progress. In WU I wouldn't be surprised if they went out of their way to make accomedations for most mutants such that they'd find means to excel at what they do.

2 the US and the majority of the western world (unlike say Japan) has one of the most historically judgmental religions/group of religions as the one with the greatest influence, and when you mix that with a large group of people who don't qualify that religion's definition/interpretation of "normal" then words like "unholy" and "unnatural" and "fiend" and "monster" get thrown around which perpetuates the initial fear and shock. add to that the fact the MCO managed to establish itself as a faux- government organization in the US complete with propaganda, and you get something that lasts longer than it has any right to

  • Now, you need to ask yourself - is all of this Gen 2 stuff a huge, elaborate hoax on the part of a small cabal who are even now laughing at the gullibility of the audience? That after getting so involved in this, at the point of a major conflict or battle with the fate of Whateley itself hanging in the balance, the following scene will play out:

Toni bolted upright in her bed, a startled gasp coming from her mouth. "Nikki!" she called softly after she'd stilled her racing heart, pounding as if she'd just consumed an entire bowl of nothing but sugar.

"What?" the weary redheaded Sidhe girl called from her bed, barely half-awake and certainly resentful of being awakened in the middle of the night.

"I just had the most bizarre nightmare!" Toni said, her entire body trembling at the reality of the dream from which she'd so violently awakened.

"About what?" Fey mumbled, really not caring but trying to pretend to so that Toni would calm down and go back to the land of nod so that she, too, could resume her slumber.

"It was here - ten years from now," Toni said, rising and padding to sit on the edge of Nikki's bed, "It ... it was horrible! Everything ... it was changed, and there was this huge Mythos monstrosity going to destroy the school and then the world. And the kids that were the world's only hope - they were so ... strange - except for this cute blue girl in Poe..." She sniffled, convulsing a tiny bit as repressed fear sneaked to the surface while she was distracted with her nose. "And ... and ... they didn't call us to help!" Toni wailed aloud.

Nikki gave her roommate and best friend a very supportive hug, starting at how Toni was still trembling. It MUST have been a very disturbing dream. "Shhh," she cooed gently to Toni. "It was only a dream."

As the in universe saying goes "Its Whateley, stranger things have happened, this year." Granded that last qualifier may not apply on the first day.

School Year or Calendar Year, there works either way- though wouldn't it be "stranger things have happened in the last 2 weeks"? Though even that would be inaccurate- as it would imply things becoming more normal, maybe "the cumulative strangeness of the last week is stranger than this" allowing for strangeness growth.

A 13 year old girl saves a cat from a group of bullies and pulls a sticking plaster off its head. She then discovers that the cat can speak, produces a rather tacky rod from hammerspace, and persuades the girl to say a five word English phrase...

...or at least, the 13 year old girl dreams of doing so, and upon waking up finds she's now blonde with twintails...

Less than the carrying capability of Earth by a significant function. (and I'd figure that number is _HIGHER_ than RL (and it's estimated to be at LEAST 20 billion in RL right now))

How many below poverty line, starving, etc?

Enough that seeing 21 year old Americans bitching about the 1% STILL makes people go "LOOK IN THE MIRROR YOU IDIOTS."
Less than RL, though I'd figure, and it depends on what you define as poverty line. (is it significantly less than RL? Mm... I'll say this, I suspect in FIRST world nations, the number is less, more or less compared to their own baseline, it could also be that the 'poverty line' is lower, who knows.) If you define the number as "Those with the inability to aquire 'legally' food, water and basic shelter from elements" as poverty: A bit HIGHER in some areas, a bit lower in others, so eh. Agreed that it's more concentrated in the more repressive regimes.

    What's the global warming/cooling status?

Still colder than when premium wine was made in Scotland. Or when Greenland was settled...

fyi, poverty line in the lower mainland of BC ( r/l ) is $2,500/mo
highest cost of living in Canada. :/
and my disability canada pension, with supplement from BC welfare, is 1,109/mo

Japan has a history of being anti mutant, anti different in many game systems, including one that a cannon author here has written fanfic's in. (Shadowrun comes to mind)

  • Because the authors don't bother to actually study Japan. I can think offhand, Mal, 2 game systems that ACUTALLY got Regional authors to do supplements for their settings. Gurps (I'm assuming they did, I can't remember any offhand) and Cyberpunk. (PacRim) I VAGULEY recall RIFTS also doing some research and pointing out how some 'speicies' were perfectly fine with Japanese.

Japan isn't really xenophobic based on _skin/appearance_, by and large. (now if you're disfigured in some ways, historically not a good thing), it's xenophobic on culture (Best rule of thumb: Japanese don't like those who don't take their shoes off in their houses in Japan, same thing as "Wear a toga when in Rome, boys.."). Note who they _hated_ the most, and still to some degree do.

Ain't Europeans or Africans, that's for sure.

Too many people make the assumption: "Japanese are racist to all but perfect humans" instead of looking at their mythology and religious aspects, and thinking all that through. (or, hell, look at manga, and how Kitsune, Elves, various animal minis, etc,, etc are viewed. That tells you a lot, no?)

To be fair, I can't say that Japan WOULDN"T have some xenophobia vis a vis mutants, metahumans (SR), or other species, mind you. It'd _really_ depend on how it was presented to the Japanese people, and how the species behaved.

For Whateley, we're theorizing enough various aspects of the Japanese mythology is 'true' (for values OF true, anyways), so the concept of 'metahumanity' and "supernatural" (both types) beings existing isn't a 'shock' as much, plus when the first Japanese mutants showed up, they leaned more towards 'helpful and useful'.

Note: And then there was the Ryukyus...

And not just within the Academy - we've seen hints that the attitude towards mutants in NYC (at least, among certain demographics) may have changed from G1, although of course we won't know for sure unless/until we see the PoV of a resident / regular visitor.

    Meanwhile, policy issues aside...

Chaka and Vox are still alive and well in G2, both having had a walk-on speaking cameo role in Road Ch. 1, as well as "an old friend" who Toni hadn't spoken to since leaving Whateley. (I wonder if their cameo is in any way related to Kristin's joke below EE's section in the G2 Announcement, or if we'll discover the significance of that in due course?)

Liz Carson's still Head (not entirely surprising!), while the Drow Collective are based in Karedonia and have been expanding their numbers (just as there are plenty of people wanting to sign up to be Animen, there are likely to be plenty of people wanting to sign up for Drowification).

Everyone's favourite (ha ha ha!) multi-billionaire family are still around - or at least, their company is.

"Grease-skin" sounds suspiciously as though a certain G1 oil manifestor's invention has gone commercial and is widely available.

Speculation: AJG Consolidated is still around, but it's a holding company, so outside investor circles has very little name recognition. It's subsidiary companies, on the other hand...

Isn't it just that "Lady Astarte" is still around? Someone else could have taken the codename.... And if someone did, I'm thinking it would be Shelly.

But, yeah, I think that it's still Liz, though.

I would guess that that comment was at least partially because EE decided to create a reality show Furry island country as the home for his student. But this story did seem to have a lot more G1 cameos than the other introduction story. The advantage of being written by G1 authors?

  • Ya, that's part of the mandatory limitations of Gen 2. They can't cameo because they don't know the outcome of timelines and can't be sure that making a cameo wouldn't end up being a continuity issue. Any time they tap a character or concept that intrudes on the original timeline, I explode volcano-like and they all walk on eggshells for a week until everyone's sure that there isn't going to be a continuity breakdown. I'm sure its more stressful than it has to be, but.. we shouldn't ever have to give up and claim that Gen 2 is actually alternate timeline as a result. And that, in itself, will be a good claim to be able to make down the line... that we had two completely engaged periods of time within the same universe/master timeline actively involved in releasing new content at the same time. Not many story universes can claim that.

  • What I'm hoping for is more wacky devises hijinx (or is that hijinxes?) Things that you might imagine overactive early teen devisers to dream up after being involved in one too many food fight.

Imagine if you will a devise I'll call the pulsed emulsion launcher, also known as the splat gun. Something the size of a tommy gun except for the cartoonishly large bore and oversize drum. The thing projects pulses of whatever emulsion or slurry is in the drum but for some reason (hey, it's a devise) whipped cream, custard and mayonaise work best.

Is it just me or do I have too many good memories of Buggsy Malone?

Another creation might be the confectionary filament projector. This rifle sized devise has a barrel ending in a large number of small holes, like a pepper-box. The multiple holes allow the user to rapidly project multiple threads of any sugary substance, essentially painting candy floss all over something (or someone).

Don't get me started on the beltfed pie launcher . . .

  • A musical devisor will get into his head that he can turn Crystal Hall into a huge musical instrument, much to the continued annoyance of the students, staff and the local were pack. Headmistress Carson will even be heard muttering (though she vehemently denies it) at one point, "I'd rather listen to Brass Monkey turned up to eleven!"

Hmm... Star Trek being referenced... Hmm... Gen2's going into Outer Space? Is that what the Big Thing is? Figuring out the Ancient Stuff, like the Isokist and the Telemaps?

Could be just a Sim, but still... ... What could be bigger than researching the Isokists Breaching the Universe? ... Except going Outside (Outside the Universe) or Elsewhere (Fae Realm)... ... If anyone's watching. Yes, I'll keep making outrageous, and larger, guesses on the Myth Arc until I either get it right, or am proven wrong. ... Unless it's irritating to the Cabal, of course.

Is there an expanded Yukinojo-class (Hah! Got the spelling right on my first try!) space vehicle for them to travel in? Although, that would actually be a different class of spaceship...

Ah, you didn't quite get the reference right. This time, the Star Trek TOS reference was ONLY about the length of the dresses. Oh, these chats are such fun - the number of different sci-fi references that pop out are just ... delightful, and if we told you a tenth of them, many of your heads would be spinning with confusion!

Anyone wanna take another guess as to the series which we were referring?? Anyone? :)

Although I have fond memories of Thunderbirds, and I guess The Time Tunnel has some iconic value. Although neither includes purple hair AFAIK. Nalley strongly suggested UFO. Maybe another Gerry Anderson production... did Space 1999 include purple hair?

  • Can't be UFO, they wore silver catsuits. And I tried multiple searches, hard to find a series with a female who has purple hair and wore silver lame short-shorts. Closest I got was Six from Tripping the Rift but that is a dress, a skimpy dress but still a dress. Driving me crazy about who it could be.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

    It's a bit of a red herring of a clue -
On-duty, the lasses of Moonbase one wore silver lame cat-suits. But occasionally, off-duty or Earthside, you'd catch sight of one in a silver lame mini-dress.

Purple hair. Moonbase One. SID, SHADO.

UFO is the correct answer. If I had said purple hair and silver lame catsuits (or jumpsuits), you'd have gotten it immediately. That would have been too easy.

  • Yeah, the Moon's surface is a bit smaller than... Asia. Brazil would fit more than four times there. the US Lower Forty-Eight would do too, with a bit more wiggle room. Even if you require a room with an Earth view, you have an area larger than Russia to choose from.

I think you can find somewhere to place your secret moon base that's not in sight of another base -- particularly considering that the horizon is much closer than on Earth. And the base itself could be underground. The problem will be hiding during the building phase, and also to ensure that your spaceships are stealthy enough not to be noticed.

  • Well I have an unfair advantage when it comes to guessing about MaLAgua's character, having read most of their Deviant Art, knowing their favorite themes, so I will behave until the first POV story of Victor Rivera, and leave you all with the knowledge that you're in for a treat, MaLAgua is wonderful with story universes, and is responsible for the birth of 2 that are currently active, and multiple iterations of a third from early on, once they manage to catch up on WU, you'll all be wanting more.

  • There was a SF reference in The Gen 2 Story set in NY (in the first part). So far no-one seems to have spotted it?
OK, I put it in and it was a bit obscure...:D

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

And... what if you shot a vole instead?

Then you'd have the vole-lator gun. Much messier, and can get you charged with war crimes.

Actually, she's surprisingly effective. The last four inventors of a similar gun went on to form the Small Animals Protection Society, and the poor SAPS even moved cities to be near Anna in case she ever needs their help.

  • At the moment poor Miyet is getting a reputation as a 'crazy cat woman' due to all the cats underfoot in her apartment. She keeps hoping one day Best will relent and transform them back, but so far the most she's been able to do is get Best to allow them to talk telepathically with one another, though unknown to Miyet, Best is sorely tempted to make the former head of security a Catgirl companion and bodyguard for her, especially since she's the cat Miyet most likes to hug and pet, and of course, there are all those wet dreams of her Paladin about her too.

  • In the intervening years, it's determined campus border security needs a boost, so the existing lake is expanded to a wide moat surrounding campus, populated with laser sharks generously donated by the Kingdom Queendom Drowdom of Karedonia. Oh, and there'll also be numerous other species in the moat you really wouldn't want to encounter, such as a GM species of Pacu that (contrary to real life) really does regard human testicles as a delicacy. On the magical front, intelligence obtained in the war against the Bastard allows the campus wards to be severely enhanced to the extent that future HMs will find it really difficult to leave campus without triggering a sensor or two. Meanwhile, the increased population of flyers on campus will lead to the installation of a radar array and security's duties will extend to providing air traffic control in the skies above campus (probably extending as far as Berlin Airport).

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

Well that's why the chickens are so fat, they make their own grease. Rally the biggest problem is the guts and feathers, and the violent explosions. Which is why Jobe uses them more for guarding places then food, don't touch the chickens, don't startle the chickens and for gods sake don't try to steal the chickens.

Yep, so they mostly feed them to the orc slaves. They can handle the explosions, unless the eggs are rotten. When a rotten egg is bitten into, the orcs know they're going to have mystery meatloaf for supper.
