  • Bleh, I have a half formed Year 2 scene in my head where a Non African or Asian Decent kid wants to join the martial arts club, both reject him or her, and from there the Admin and Doc, Jadis and a few other rule lawyers get drawn in. Some how I see it ending in combat in a mock court room.

And Valentine, er, yes, I did mean the UK use of "Jumper". I've never even seen the word used for a skirt before.

The Re-animation Lab is for the sophomore-level necromancy students. Biology is a recommended pre-req, but most students these days realize that skimping on quality parts or leaving some out results in an inferior project (and grade).

The junior level necromancy students use the Animation Lab under Kirby. You'd think spontaneous generation would be easier than re-animation, but the extra amount of astral warding is a bit too much to expect from an underclassman.

Some of the more advanced chimerical projects may require use of one of the off-plane research spaces provisionally made available to seniors who have demonstrated a modicum of responsibility in their studies (It is theoretically possible that a promising necromancer may meet this criterion.) In these cases, it is highly recommended that the student complete additional coursework relating to ecodiversity and the ecosystem niches being considered for population.

[ N.B. It should be noted that "tasty fishiez" are at no point involved in these courses, nor will any of these labs be flooded for the purpose of creating new varieties of such. ]

Um...I've been working nights and in my tiredness, I may have copied something from my original design idea back in 2014, when the character was originally two ideas. One was essentially a junior high girl, but with the powers of the G2 character "Donut". That is, a food manifestor. Every scene would have her eating candy or chocolate that she made herself. The second was basically Mimeo, but flipping the "power of fighting" as his trigger for 'the power of love.'
Then as I combined them into Ceilidh, I gradually became less interested in the food thing, and a lot less interested in it when "Not-in-Kansas" was released and Donut was introduced.
I'm not sure if I want to add those details in the new rewrite of Ceilidh's story, which I really should stop playing Breath of the Wild and add more words to...

So, 10 months ago is when she accidentally crippled her dad, I guess.

Pretty much, though really, considering the nature of that meeting, 'accidentally' might not be the right word ^_^. Part of the indecision of whether to include how Ceilidh actually takes on the powers is this event, since I'm not sure if I want to go "full on Domovye level darkness" and keep to the original idea of "the power of love" as her mimic trigger, now that I've given her a retarded aging keeping her looking about eight years old.
(Edit: for the record, in the original idea, the mimicing of Zara's Exemplar/Heal/Regen mix came from Ceilidh's power-manifesting burnout. Zara and Chris have been mutants long enough that they recognise burnout, and Zara would have burned her hands raw keeping Ceilidh alive.)

The Aunt and Uncles thing is for the kiddy look?

Mix of attempting to keep up the image, which is important to Ceilidh, and also, it's pretty common to call your parents' really close friend's your Aunts and Uncles (Reinforce is doing it to the Outcast Corner, for instance). Ceilidh regards Chris as her Daddy, Miguel isn't so much a father as a 'biological sperm donor' to her.
Chris is part of the British military's mutant group. As such, his group is pretty close knit and Ceilidh would call them her Aunts and Uncles, even more so than either of Chris's sisters (though not more so than Zara's brother, who is a gadgeteer.)
So it's half "keeping the image" and half "habit of referring to adults who are special".
Notice that Rack and Nephandus are both "Mr." and not "Uncle".

  • Oh Mein Gott! So Cute!

How did he even get there? AVies' spirits pick their places, not the other way around... Well, big Hallow and strong dominating connection, I guess.

What powers does she get, precisely?

You've got places where he's said to be talking, which shouldn't happen...

You've got code mixed in with your text, search for square brackets.

You've also got places at the end which are italicized which shouldn't be.

  • He probably DID pick her... he just didn't expect her to have total control once he did.

Powers? She really hasn't figured that out yet, actually. She's eight. But mostly? Time. Kronos was the King of Titans and held sway over TIME. So far? She can slow down time relative to herself or speed up her own passage through it. She can also "accelerate" herself to make herself faster. Eventually? Well... who knows. And there's that damned sickle that keeps popping up in the garden shed every day... rusty and useless as all get out, but it just won't go away.

  • Actually, Chronos being time-related is myths getting mixed up, according to Wikipedia, IIRC.

But could sorta make sense if a bit of him escaped, got modded by human belief, then went in the girl...

I could use her though, for my Magical Index fusion fic, 'cause their magic system relates more to human beliefs that mythological fact.

  • If my understanding of the Wikipedia articles is correct, Chronos and Chronus were being confused/combined before the first century. Which sounds to me like they were first combined by the people who were worshiping them. At which point it's less of a mix-up and more of a variation in beliefs.

  • I figure in this instance it's always possible to go with the idea that Chronus was absorbed by Kronos as a result of the worshippers combining them into one being, with Kronos being the better recognized.

  • ^^ But Greek Myth is new compared to the New Olympians. Galatea was an Artificer, for example, and that was totally distorted by the myths.

^ I guess, if you don't seal them up with the New Olympians and stuff, that could work.

It'd be so funny/weird when Imperious calls a little girl, Father.

More or less a huge part of what went through my head after I planned it out and wrote it. The look on their faces when they run into a little girl, or even a teenager perhaps by that point, who gives off the sense of being Dad will be priceless.

  • Not that Zeus's relationship with Cronus was ever the sort of happy Father/Son relationship that people would aspire to have with their kids.

  • The part that worried me was that for some reason I was thinking Ribbon's younger granddaughter was named Abigail (her name is actually Kimberly, so... no), and was starting to imagine all the horrible consequences of that.

I also notice we never got their last names (unless Mark's last name is also Morgan, which must have been amusing to them if so - it's a common enough name, so there are plenty of unrelated people with that surname, sort of how Lupine's parents weren't closely related despite having similar - though not identical - surnames).

Techwolf's last name is also very similar

    Harry Wolf
    Stella Wolfe

What is it with wolves having their last name as some variant of "Wolf"?

    "Is this a joke?"

"That was the name he was using before he was turned! It was his given name!"

  • To be fair, Harry is the victim of a curse. It's quite likely that the witch that placed the curse was inspired by his grandpa's surname. And she did have a wicked sense of humor regarding names, because his dad is called Red Wolfe, and he is called Harry Wolfe -- and there's some thought that it may be part of the curse.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Though this does assume that ghosts can become Avatar spirits. We saw that with 'Shine, true, but that seemed to be an exceptional case. Of course, one could argue that applies here, too.

I think Jamie's shifting wasn't so much their power as it was a result of whichever spirit they'd hosted. So, not obvious in a blind(?) precog who could also interact with the ghost of Mrs. Potter.

If she's also an astral avatar it's nice of Jamie to step in as a guide through this lifetime (which promises to be interesting!)

I wouldn't rewrite it though, the story caught my attention as it was.

And here I thought her spirit was Jamie, 'cause he was mentioned.

I found the Circe ref too vague, 'cause Circe could have just used her precog abilities or whatever, to find Kimberly. There's not much going for her spirit being Greek, other than that, and her last name.

A hint that her spirit blinded her, however, would be a bit more useful... But, in any case, I wasn't wondering that much about her spirit, 'cause I thought it was Jamie, but even if I did, she could just be a random precog...

Making her precog and her blindness, stated as a result of her spirit, instead of just incidental, brings her spirit into focus more?

Blind genderswapped (only twice ever) precog: I was thinking the judge would be a good namesake.

Talking to the dead (Jamie, Mrs. Potter) + conscious or occasional shifter: not so much.

Mads would probably amend a few:

"Never explain yourself. Unless you’re lying through your teeth.” to "Explanations are for your accountants; results for your clients"

You'll want the real breakdown on hand the next time you cost out a job.

Never shit where you eat. If you can’t walk away from it, don’t do it.”

That covers what jobs to take or refuse, how to go about doing the job, and how to conduct yourself before and after. If nothing else, remember that infiltration is relatively easy, but exfil after something goes wrong - and it will - is what often separates the successes from the casualties.

    Hi Paulette! :)

It wasn't raining, Teri was just singing the song in the same tone as Alex from A Clockwork Orange.

From Small Mercies, the MCO agent said warping was different as it goes by how many dimensions the mutant manipulates.
So Monica is a four because she can control gravity in any direction and can sense it as well.
Heather can only move things horizontally, in a straight line with no deviation to the side or up and down. Along that line however it's extremely fast and dangerous.

I dunno why, but I think she might run away?

@Kaitha39 - Do you mean "six girls" instead of "six little girls"? Aquerna isn't that small?

Interesting switch from "Miranda" to "Mahren" at the end...

...Well, she probably isn't that small, certainly not like the JH girls, the biggest of which I believe is now Clover who isn't even on the scene. But eh, she's not that tall either, IIRC.

The switch from Miranda to Mahren isn't symbolic. It's Nalley's influence on my writing. I was taught to change the descriptor, Nalley was taught to change the name (or at least that was said on the old forums, IIRC). After reading so much Whateley, I'm now combining the two methods by default.

Here we go, from Small Mercies:

Boost shook her head. “Warper ratings are based on how many dimensions are trackable being altered, for you, space, gravity which brings time, even if at a immeasurable level and you appear to be drawing off of another dimensional aspect we don’t see often. The G means you are a gravity-focused Warper. Even Warper 1’s can be incredibly powerful within that dimension, but 1’s are rare. Usually warpers affect multiple planes of reality simultaneously, so the rating is more of a scientific tag than a power-level, though the two usually correlate.”

Heather's power doesn't correlate, and only works on a limited section of space. Hence a 1.

Ah, yes. "There's probably a line being crossed here." *re-reads section* "Or, it could be more than one."

For example, imagine the psychotherapist who's been accidentally scheduled for Ruth (from " How Far ") and Metro back-to-back.

There's probably a flag in the scheduling program to prevent Metro and Pejuta from accidentally being stuck in the waiting area together. Not that he'll let that happen if he has any escape route.

As in, class. The cottages were only mentioned to point out where the girls were looking in particular. If someone on your floor is fighting, you're probably going to watch them more than two guys. How are you going to throw banter if you don't know what happened?

And er... If you didn't recognise it, Firebush might be too specific an insult/nickname, possibly British inspired? Back when I was in the air cadets, it's the nickname I got given. There's a reason you think it's porn related. It's a more 'colourful' form of "Ginger pubes". As a possible TMI moment: Bare in mind I started being given this nickname after my first away camp with communal showers...

The spirit is talking to the avatar in the scene, telling her to stop absorbing electricity from her opponent. The spirit is an electrical elemental, the avatar was a baseline mage before manifesting, they work out a barely functioning agreement between themselves regarding how they use essence and electricity. The absorbing is filling the well more than they can control, hence the hobgoblins, and the spirit telling her to back off.

  • Maybe cheering is too much. Eh. I can change it if neccessary.
Edit: I did change it, and I prefer the change. I realise Schwartzchild's not been mentioned much, but it pleases me to be able to put her vocal ticks in a scene. Yes, she is inspired by Clueless. I've never, like, been to Californa for, like, accuracy in stereotypes, so you can like, get like, Clueless, and stuff?

Flamekitty was just a hero name I inserted for the people doing hobgoblin cleanup. In my ultra-originality, I've changed it to completely not the first obvious thing to be different.
Kaitha is a codename. In the same vein as the Lit Chix, her given name is Danielle, and now that you mention it, I notice that I haven't done anything to link her to being the head of the knitting circle a few microscenes ago.

The catching of Biggus that makes you think of Pokemon was mostly to show that Ceilidh is lucid in this class session. Blue hands for lucid, red auras for raging.

As far as the BBC tell me, an Al-Amira is a form of headscarf that leaves the face free. If that's wrong, feel free to correct me. Half the enjoyment of writing Eliza scenes is that it forces me to look up things about a region of the world I don't know enough about.
(Although I do know enough to know the terrorism is NOT religion required. It is people taking out their grievances by interpreting religion in a way to make people divide, segregate, and hate each other. It has more to do with the Empire than it does to do with Islam.)

Having said that, I would greatly appreciate any Muslim who wears a Burkha or Niqab explaining why an Al-Amira, Shayla, Khimar or Chador can't be worn instead. I think it would greatly improve relations between Westerners and Muslim women, while also remaining respectful of their religion if they did. Liberal statements of "they should wear what they want" are great, up until you get hate groups like the EDL saying "They're not integrating, how can we trust them if we can't see who they are." and proceeding to burn down Mosques because of it.

The level of hate shown to Muslims is on another level compared to any other group I've seen. It may have been that I was a child and therefore ignorant of the situation at the time, but I swear the Irish weren't as hated back before the IRA disarmed.

Originally, for me? I worked with a Finish girl called "Kaisa" and another person with a lisp. Then I was struggling to come up with a name for a Blood Elf in Wow and remembered the mispronunciation.
Been using it as a name since. It amuses me greatly that most people don't get the pronunciation right. (The best was someone calling me "Cathy-the".)

I've since learned that Kaitha is the Hindi word for a type of fruit. The Elephant Apple. Bael. The Wood Apple. Located in India, Bael trees are apparently sacred to Hindus.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong then. I swear "Angel in Father John's basement" gave Englund some special deal with the Catholics.
Been some time since I read Death be sweet though.

  • The only possible way Englund could be even close to being able to conduct a Catholic mass is if he was an Anglican priest. Otherwise, he can read from the bible and possibly, but most likely not, serve as a communion minster and thus conduct a communion service, but not a mass. Even the Anglican priest bit is a huge stretch, as that's based on the fact Anglican ministers who convert to Catholicism have an easier time becoming priests, and if they were married, can even receive special dispensation to become a priest despite being married. Any and all instances of a married Practicing Catholic Priest are the result of an Anglican minister converting to the Catholic Faith (far as I know).

The Greek Orthodox (while accepted as sister to the catholic faith) is an entirely separate deal and is not "protestant." Englund is protestant, so he's not Greek Orthodox.

Not a muslim but I've studied this a bit.
The Quran doesn't say anything about headscarves, burqa's or even veils. Hat's, hoods of cloaks, or even a kerchief covering the hair would suffice. The first verse where it talks of head covers covering the bosoms, was a common Middle Eastern hood that women wore to keep the sun off their heads, the trailing bits could be worn over the chest or down the back, and Mohammad said that they should cover the chest for modesty. So this is a bit of a contentious part between the conservative and moderate groups,

    Surah Nur 24:31
And say to the believing women (that) they should lower [of] their gaze and they should guard their chastity, and not (to) display their adornment except what is apparent of it. And let them their head covers over their bosoms, and not (to) display their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers or fathers (of) their husbands or their sons or sons (of) their husbands or their brothers or sons (of) their brothers or sons (of) their sisters, or their women or what possess their right hands or the attendants having no physical desire among [the] men or [the] children who (are) not aware of private aspects (of) the women. And not let them their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah altogether O believers! So that you may succeed.
    __

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59).

This is NOT from the quran but is often used to show that women must wear a hijab.
“Aisha (the wife of the Prophet) reported that Asmaa, the daughter of Abu Bakr, entered into the presence of the Messenger of Allah wearing thin transparent clothing, So the Messenger of Allaah turned away from her saying : ‘O’ Asmaa, when a women reaches the age of menstruation, it is not allowed that any of her should be seen except this’ – and he pointed to his face and two hands.” (Sahih, reported from Abu Dawud and Al-Bayhaqee.)

So women have to be modest, covering their bodies, but covering the face and the hands, as occurs with Burqa's actually goes well past the modesty that Mohammad insisted on. The Hijab is more open to interpretation, does the face include the hair, the ears and the neck, or must those be covered to be modest?
The extreme form of modesty comes from pre-Islamic time, mostly with converts among the Arab nomadic groups that became some of the more intense followers and warriors for the Islamic armies. This has been enforced at various times, most recently with the increasing power of the ultra conservative Wahhabi Islamic sect out of Saudi Arabia and the Muslim Brotherhood which both arose in the late 1800's and took off with the oil boom in the 1950's and 60's.
Before that time, while head scarves, hats and hoods were common for women at all levels, and veils were common amongst the upper class, they were in many styles and degrees. The type of dancing that Belly Dancing evolved from was created by Islamic culture and while they wore veils, covered their breasts and private parts, it certainly wasn't modest, but it was common entertainment throughout the Islamic world.

So as one Muslim blogger wrote (can't find a the post, sorry), the edicts saying women MUST cover everything except their faces, and with very strict Imams' Must cover their faces as well, are being created by old men who are afraid of women and want to go back to some mythical time when the world was pure.

The level of hate shown to Muslims is on another level compared to any other group I've seen. It may have been that I was a child and therefore ignorant of the situation at the time, but I swear the Irish weren't as hated back before the IRA disarmed.

For this, I'm willing to discuss the topic with you, but it's gotta be by email or private messaging. I promise to be very polite but it's going to involve a lot of ugly stuff. Send me a PM if you're interested.

I know tons if you have any questions, but mostly only if it is somehow related to the Catholic faith or history of the church. I'd estimate I'm a very poor practicing catholic, but I have a ton of info from 12 years of catholic education, regular mass attendance, extra curricular education, church participation, easy access to priests/ministers/people studying to be priests, and a mother who has a master's degree in Theology.

  • Interesting. If your interpretation is correct (I'm not saying it is or isn't, I just have no data either way) the rule about women keeping their hair covered seems pretty much identical to a similar rule for Jewish women. Which many Jewish women get around by wearing wigs over their natural hair...

Not really surprising, since despite their mutual hatred there are many points of similarity between Islam and Judaism. The most obvious being dietary laws, which forbid many of the same foods.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • my limited understanding of this is that much of the Prophet's words were derived from the Torah to begin with. It makes sense there would be significant overlap in some areas.

If I remember correctly they are both Abrahamic religions, and so at some point they were a the same religion, and split. The dietary laws are more to do with religious authorities also doubling as the FDA of the era, for instance the only clove hoof animal in the region at the time was the Camel, a very dirty animal, they knew nothing about one of the cleanest animals (the pig) also having a cloved hoof, they also didn't trust people to cook various bottom feeders properly so all of them were banned, I forget the reason for not mixing dairy and meat, I think it has to do with digestive problems.

  • @Forger03 - I'm probably wrong. As I said, I'm personally a secular agnostic, so I'm not the most knowledgeable. I just thought there was a story element somewhere that showed Englund doing services for more than just the Protestants.

@Domoviye - That was about my understanding of what the Qur'an said, but I just don't get why anyone would go full burkha when something like the Shayla would not only fulfill what the Qur'an asks for, but wouldn't antagonise the locals of their new Western country? I'm not trying to come at this from a hateful perspective, merely an inquisitive one, and it seems to me that many people in the West have a problem with the full burkha.

I'd be happy to learn about the Irish situation. I was born in 87 and grew up in Suffolk (East UK. Had very little violence from anywhere) so by the time I grew up enough to take in details of the world, 11/9/2001 happened and the world around me stopped talking about the Irish and it was all about the Muslims. Views may be dramatically different in areas where the IRA actually hit. Suffolk wasn't one of them.

    @Malady
No, Kaitha is an Exemplar, pseudo-Avatar, Energiser and Faux-Wiz. I was using Kaitha as my main pen-name before I found out about it referring to Bael-fruit.
The Energiser trait allows her to absorb electromagnetic waves, including Thundershock's attack and is how she caught the spirit. Having been born into a baseline mage family, she (tentatively) stabilised the spirit within her and can now feed it more electricity, in return the spirit digests the electricity into essence. The two end up fighting each other frequently over how much of the power should be for what.

I hadn't read How Far, 'Ruth' was chosen because it's a name that appears in the Bible. Like Molach's mother in Girl Genius, no, I did not read the relevant sections before using it as a name. If it's appropriate or inappropriate, it wasn't intentional.

Buster's being a bit smarter! Nice!

Sahar does have a well-known reputation on campus. Bullies usually only want to pick fights with people weaker than them. It's less they're being smarter and more "Oh shit, it's the girl everyone says is evil and will kill you."
Their mindset is kinda stupid when dealing with mutants. Most of the JH girls could easily kill Buster, but they don't look like dangerous killers do they? (Ember could burn him alive. Revekah and Little Bee could invent a gadget that puts out too much force. Miranda could Psi-bomb his mind out. Diz Aster and Ceilidh can rip him to shreds with their PK/TK fields.)

Are you like Rose Bunny and you copy-paste so spacing is tricky?

Originally I was, when putting up scenes that I had written while lurking. All of the Eliza scenes have been written out as I make them. I'm not perfect on grammar, but between what I know and what Grammarly flags up, I do okay.
When I don't have to fight it because Grammarly is set to American (Simplified) English. ^_^ :P

Any stories or Characters I put out are available to write around. Feel free to borrow them!

  • Iwasforger03 wrote: The only possible way Englund could be even close to being able to conduct a Catholic mass is if he was an Anglican priest.

For those interested, there has been two main events that define Christianity today.

There is 'The Great Schisim' that occurred in the eleventh century, which occurred mainly over Papal Supremacy. Giving us the 'Catholic' church, who recognises the Pope and is based in Rome, and the 'Eastern Orthodox' churches (Greek, Russian, etc.) who don't recognise 'Papal Supremacy'.

This is mostly a church hierarchal issue, and Catholics and Orthodox sacraments are recognised by each group, and if no other option is available is fine for Catholics and Orthodox worshipers to attend each other's masses and receive communion.

The next schisim was in the sixteen hundreds, and this was where 'Protestant' churches sprung up in 'protest' against the Catholic Church. This is where your Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodist, Quakers, etc. sprung from.

So as far as Christian faith is concerned, by far the largest group is the Orthodox (Catholics and Orthodox) which is about 1/3rd the population of the planet, then you have the various Protestant religions who vary in Orthodoxy from relatively close (Anglicans) to not really Christian any more (Jehovah's witnesses, Mormons, and Southern Baptists), who combined make up about 1/6th the worlds population (which is pretty close in size to the Muslims).

Interesting side note, there are Eastern Rite Catholics (in communion with the Pope, but celebrate mass in the same style as Eastern Orthodox Christians). These Eastern Rite Catholics allow married priests, as it's only the Western Rite Catholics (or Roman Catholics, the ones you're used to seeing) that forbid married priests.

So basically, while it might be OK for Catholics and Orthodox worshipers to receive communion and worship with one another, from the point of view of the Orthodox religions (Catholics are just the largest of the orthodox Christians) ALL the Protestant churches are to a greater or lesser extent 'heretical', and their sacraments not recognised (i.e., doesn't count as going to mass and receiving communion). So Reverand Euglund would not be leading a mass for the Catholics.

Christianity, Judaism and Islam are all Abrahamic religions. That's why the Quran allows Jews and Christians some more rights as second class citizens and the paying of Jizya (basically a tax) to live in peace. Whereas other religions have far less rights under Sharia, and are effectively a third class.
One reason pigs are not allowed to be eaten by Jews and Muslims has to do with resources. Pigs need a lot of water to survive, and water in the Middle East is precious, even in places where they have a lot of it. So it's likely that leaders saw how bad pigs were for the environment and came up with religious reasons (such as one of the older saints banishing a pack of demons into a group of pigs) to declare them unclean.
With the center of early Christian belief being the Roman Empire, for the majority the water concern wasn't a problem, and they could take Jesus' message about overturning the old laws to heart. In the Middle Eastern and North African Christian communities, pork never really caught on because the water issue was still a problem, even before Islamic expansion.

How Far is pretty brutal, in fact very brutal. And I chose the name Ruth for the main character because she needed a new name and considering she was originally Amish, she went with the biblical name for an outsider.

I find it very amusing that several locust species are designated as both kosher and halal. Pardon me if this comes off crass, but it definitely feels like a retcon when they realized one particular type of bug eats all their crops, and that bug is then suddenly okay to eat, in contrast to many others.

Locust aren't bottom feeders they are pretty much entirely herbivorous very efficient ones at that, but they dont eat fecal matter or carcasses and therefore don't pick up the sicknesses that other insects do, the way I learned it, Kosher is more to do with what the animal eats, or the animal's hygiene Pigs weren't available in the desert, and the wording is cloven hoofed animal, not specifically pigs, the animal that fits that description is the camel, which is frequently infested with flees and other bugs that use it as a source of water and nutrients. I studied this for my Bar Mitzvah, if you look at the laws of keeping kosher, they mostly boil down to things that can easily cause sickness.

  • Note that Military Chaplains, of all faiths, perform ceremonies in all other faiths. Those ceremonies are pretty much recognized by all religions. So you could have a Rabbi perform a Catholic Mass, and it would be fully recognized by the Church.

More than likely at Whateley, a Priest from either Dunwich or Berlin or one of the other towns comes in and performs a Mass on Sundays.

As long as he has a few seconds of consciousness to activate his powers he'll live. So stabbing him in the heart will be touch and go and he'll have to work through the pain almost instantly, but he has a decent chance of at least making it to Doyle.

W/r pork, there is a specific prohibition in the Torah against eating pork or even touching the carcass. Therefore whether it has fleas or other bugs that feed off (as if a cow doesn't) it or doesn't live in the SW Asian and North African desert (neither do turkeys) is irrelevant. Instead the prohibition is generally understood as one that doesn't have to make sense.

The prohibitions against predatory animals likely would still exclude pigs because they can and will eat carrion - rendering them unclean without there being a reliable way for the butcher or purchaser to know that that had happened. Still it comes down to eating pork is something a Jew is not supposed to do.

I went to a Catholic Mass performed by a Rabbi while in the Army. It was very brief. Communion had been prepared by a Catholic Priest elsewhere. His assistant may have been Christian, but I have no idea.

They did a rules change in 2014 where Chaplains cannot be forced to perform a rite that they object to.

If the communion had been prepared elsewhere, it was NOT a Mass. Holy Mass includes the consecration of the host, and that can only be done by an ordained priest or bishop. What you had was a communion service under special dispensation from a local bishop. Normally THAT can only be done by a deacon or priest under extraordinary circumstances.

... Regen-1, AV-1, WA-1, Gadg-1... Gonna wait to see what else turns up. How's she gonna lose against a Wiz-1??

Nope. She's facing Tink. I wonder if she might be able to win...

Will her bad luck follow her to Survival??? Well, she's handling things better than Kayda might have... Perhaps she had some wins in between her losses?

(I've also seen families that always hand-wash their meat dishes for this reason, or use paper/plastic dishes for their meat)

Heh. Our kitchen has two separate counters with sink, simply because my mother thinks it's convenient (one sink to wash greasy stuff like cooking pans, the other to wash less-greasy stuff like drinking vessels -- so the non-greasy stuff does not end up greasy too). Some years ago, we decided to tear the kitchen down and redo it in a different layout (after 30 years, besides the wear and tear, our needs had changed). We took the original blueprints to companies specializing in kitchen design to pick their brains... when they saw the two sinks, everybody assumed that we were Jewish (well, having sorta... distinctive... noses didn't help).

And yeah, the new layout STILL has two separate counters and sinks. We do like the convenience.

Nope. She's facing Tink. I wonder if she might be able to win...

Will her bad luck follow her to Survival??? Well, she's handling things better than Kayda might have... Perhaps she had some wins in between her losses?

Saving Throw is a healer, who just happens to be able to consciously heal himself. And his rating is much higher, easily a 4 or 5.
The avatar is also a manifestor with a reasonable rating level there. Just with his dog he's seen as an avatar first and foremost.
And the gadgeteer is the same one I wrote about earlier, so his rating is at least mid levels, just his hold outs are all body enhancements.

And I wasn't planning writing most of these shorts, it just struck me as funny if she kept getting her but kicked by people who were suppose to be weak.

Laws of Koshrut, in detail! [ Click to expand ]

Vayikra/Leviticus 11:2-8 and D'varim/Deuteronomy 14:3-8. The text lists allowable animals (specific), appends only those that have a wholly cloven hoof AND chew their cud (general), then specifically excludes those animals that do not meet both the criteria: camel, hare, rock-badger, and swine.

Most siddurim include a passage outlining how analysis of Torah should procede, in determining whether a statement is meant to be more severe or more lenient. As the passages regarding swine are calling these things out as specific examples to illustrate a general principle, this would be something interpreted as more severe. It's reasonable to consult "your local Orthodox rabbi", who would have studied more of the relevant Law - not just a handful of verses in isolation - than random internet commentors (like me).

Of course, it's important to remember that Jewish Law is not limited to what's literally in the Tanakh, but Talmud, Mishnah, and the law of the land are the Law. Even then, one should follow local custom (which is where the practice of keeping kosher can vary wildly from the actual requirements.)

I think I might have started it, with my list of Trait-1s, but Kaitha's ended it, 'cause no way she's staying after that? Unless Tolman or something sets up something that she can most likely win... ... Uh... I can't think of a candidate, actually...

I would guess the reasoning varies by person. Some might mistakenly believe that it is required. Some might understand that it is not required, but still feel like they're being immodest if they don't wear it (I'm an atheist, but that doesn't stop me from feeling improper if, say, my stomach is exposed). And some do it out of pride, just like how some LGBT folks wear rainbow colored stuff even though it increases the chance they'll encounter hostility.

Hostility sucks, but sometimes it's worth it just to be able to remind the world you exist, and that you won't be swept under the rug.

That can suck, immensely. Hoping the water supply to the tank was shut off in a timely manner!

FWIW, I'm fairly happy with having replaced my old HWH with one of the tankless, on-demand heaters, but YMMV.

Foxfire had parts in Ceilidh's story before it was lost. Basically as a recurring antagonist for Estelle, but sympathetic to the other characters. Then she engaged in giving the girls tasks designed to piss off Tansy. Very similar in nature to what Murphy does with them in "Rules of Whateley". I'd originally given her the characteristic of being nice until someone asked her to explain something, and then she'd bore Ceilidh to sleep.

Included a joke where someone could restrain Rage!Ceilidh, but not stop her. So Foxfire tried to exposition her to sleep.
I mean, it didn't work, but she tried....

Not sure how I'd change it for the rewrite, where Maggie is taking Tansy's place.

    Edit:

@Kaitha - Wow! Nice description of Cindy in the opening!

Did Aiden say "step-dad" 'cause he knew she was a changeling? If so, how did he know?? ... Else, how did he guess the right taunt? I guess he was just lucky...

Initially it was just rifting on the story of Cinderella - That is, The protagonist is (basically) the slave girl of her stepmother and stepsisters. Then I just kinda threw it in.
    AFAIK Cindy isn't a changeling, she's a lesbian.

...It wasn't intentional for that, and I don't recall if Morpheus ever actually noted Cinderella's family history (do we even know her non-code name?) but speaking bluntly, it's not exactly an uncommon backstory when lesbianism is involved.

To be honest, the thought process of the entire scene was just "Show Cindy starting to win, so she doesn't completely break down and drop the class."

Mmm. Yep. All I wanted to do in my scene was blow up some Adamant with some justification.

I wonder how she'll fair when she's the attacker having to react to someone's reaction instead of having an advantage as a defender, where the person's already in motion and there's some telegraphing of the oncoming attack...

The subway under Boston had been growing in complexity for years. It was so complex, in fact, that the best mathematicians could not calculate its connectivity.

Then the first train disappeared. The system was closed, so it couldn't have gone anywhere, but when all the trains were pulled, they still couldn't find it. The searchers would see a red light, wait curiously, and hear a train passing in the distance, sometimes so close that it appeared to be just around the next bend. Where was the train? What happened to the passengers? Professor Tudor has a theory.

Don't worry Sara pulled them all out. Through she lost her lunch a few times. We are still looking for where it wandered off to. Last we heard of it it was making a nest in Belphegor lab. If we can find it it has a standing job offer in security.

She's not a devisor or gadgeteer.and any mental illnesses are real-world ones. Except her reaction to sugar. That's all thanks to her metabolism.
And she did get out of the tests initially by claiming it was too dirty. But at Whateley it was done.

  • Is there anyone whose permission I would require to write a Cinderella Micro-Scene?

I had an idea but do not wish to slight anyone by writing it without proper considerations. I would not wish to take control of someone's character from them.

Speaking of course of FanFic characters. The canon ones are more or less fair game as I am clearly using them for non-canon appearances/interpretations. FanFic characters on the other hand are more muddy.

If cinderella is canon then I missed her showing up somewhere.

She's an official character, who has appeared in R&R and I think No Place Like Poe. Just bit parts, but she's there.

She is canon, Domoviye is correct - she's been in 2 stories now. She might possibly maybe be in a third story, having a slightly more prominent role, but that's for idle speculation as to what my muse might or might not make me do if or when I write a tale with Danny.

Depending on what you want to do, she is Morpheus' character, so depending on what you want to write, you might want to check with him.

Admittedly the pumpkins were originally roses, but I wanted to make one more reference to the Cinderella story (movie not original, folklore is weird).

The whole idea for the scene came to me from the "you must leave when the clock strikes twelve" clause. I had to make a reference to the inspiration.

  • I like dino tail and I cannot lie
    You other mammals can't deny
That when a raptor runs in with its big sharp teeth
And it sweeps you off your feet
You get sprung, but you can't act tough
'Cause you notice that tail was stuck
Out behind the grin he's wearing
I'm getting eaten and I can't stop staring
Oh Razor, I want to eat wit'cha
    Please let me lick ya
My ape-friends tried to warn me
But that guitar you got makes (me so horny)
    Ooh, spiny tail bone
You say you want to take me home?
    Well, harm me, harm me
'Cause you ain't that loser Barney
    I've seen him huntin'
    To hell with just buntin'
    He's loud, proud,
The way he runs has got me wowed
    I'm tired of the Holocene
    Sayin' monkeys are the king
Take any little kid and ask them that
    Jurassic please come back
    So, fellas (yeah) fellas (yeah)
Has your dino got the tail (hell yeah)
Tell 'em to wag it (wag it) wag it (wag it)
    Wag that juicy tail
Razor got back (Aussie fits with the Outcast booty)

No, but spirits following a pattern tend to stay "local", so an avatar may be more likely to be from the same area the animal is from, descended from someone originally from that location, or descended from someone whose clan totem was that animal.

I wasn't saying necessarily in the case of an avatar... Whateley has many students with GSD that takes on the form of animal forms or characteristics. One of my characters does follow the spirit from the region, in her case, Minnesota.... She's not happy with what she got initially, but at least she's not a Gopher...

There's a great quote describing a character with a similar power in Ilona Andrew's White Hot. (the child mentioned is his daughter)

A large Doberman pincher sat next to the child, as tall as she was

    ...
    ...

“You must be Matilda.” I smiled at the little girl.

    She nodded.

    “Is that your dog?”

    She nodded again.

    “What’s his name?”

“Bunny,” she said in a small voice.

Bunny looked at me with the kind of suspicion usually reserved for rattlesnakes. Cornelius was an animal mage, a rare brand of magic, which meant Bunny wasn’t a dog. He was the equivalent of a loaded assault rifle pointed in my direction.

“He can smile,” Matilda offered. “Smile, Bunny.”

Bunny showed me a forest of gleaming white fangs. I fought an urge to step back.

The ferret heist is easily the best part of the book.

Huh, sounds familiar, doesn't it? Perhaps after the Tink-pocalypse in that one set of micro-scenes, the last remaining Tink's brain was scanned and uploaded to the Central Control System for the city where the human survivors were living...

That would explain so much about Alpha Complex. It truly would.

That would be terrifying, but if that was the case she'd have more trees and flowers, and mice.

But really she just wants everyone around her to be safe and secure. Even if she has to break people to do so.

  • Not quite sure why or how I got this idea, but something early today occured to me at random. The possible Pairing of Mule and Folder. So I threw together a short scene I can turn into a longer story if I want to, but only after rereading the entire "A single Fold" plus Dani's scene in "Insanity Prerequisite" part 4, which suggests at least some slight deviations to her character and personality and philosophy of non-violence.

Technically, Mule was never shown on screen learning Dani was Pat, but he DOES know Pat lives, and he did see Pat once after the transformation was complete. It wouldn't take much for him to at least be able to figure out "that girl looks like female Pat. She must BE female Pat," approach her, and find out.

As for pairing them like this? Honestly, I wasn't positive until I read a line from "A single fold" where Pat says that if Mule was a girl, He'd want to take her home to his parents.

My actually inspiration had something to do with the idea that Pat/Dani's pacifist stance would mesh well with Mule's Largely "big defender/wall" nature. Obviously, that was in some ways naive, thus why I reread the story first to be sure, but I think it does still have some application.

He doesn't even know he turned into a girl. And it's not like it was a straight gender swap. He was tuned into an idyllic Indian girl. There would be little or nothing of the old pat left in appearance.

  • you misunderstand me. Mule saw what Pat looked like after he was fully transformed into a girl. when I say "female pat" that is what I refer to. Mule knows that Pat became an idyllic Indian Lady.

  • Thanks Malady, I'll get those fixed eventually, especially if I expand this into a bigger story.

And yeah, I sort of went with the idea that she did kind of want him to ask her out, but at the same time, she didn't. She's conflicted about it because Patrick does not fully accept being female or the idea that his intellectual attraction to Mule might also be physical now.

As for biology and her brain not getting along: her body is the result of a spell that was implied to be intended to turn her into the perfect wife. It did not affect her brain as intended, but her body has all the appropriate reactions of a heterosexual woman to both men and women. It's made things very very annoying for Dani. I also took a few queues from Erica/Eisenmadel, who actually did completely switch preferences upon her transformation, with no say in the matter whatsoever and despite never having previously had any attraction to men at all.

  • She's... playing along, but Dani still insists that she's a buy, no matter what her body has to say. Pat was shown to be self-destructively stubborn about his pacifism, i see no reason it couldn't extend to the gender change.

She's a Meanad of course she drinks! And her original personality is Margaret, having an insane spirit jammed into her has caused some mental problems.
And yeah, they're pretty messed up. Although when they started they were as sane as most people. Now they're not really seeing people as people half the time. So yeah, Malcolm saw them slaughter most of his men, eat a soul and was then mind raped.

Lets just say that Canada did some very fucked up things in WW2, even in reality.

You want to investigate what happens when mustard gas is applied to the genitals, we've got soldiers we'll do it.
You're afraid of testing biological and chemical weapons in Britain, Canada has lots of land send it over.
Oh look we made a nerve gas ten times as potent as what the Germans use, how can we mass produce it?
Hey Britain what do you need us to do? This list you gave us of your five year plan for biological warfare is out of date, we've already been doing all of this for a couple of months. Hey why are you backing away? It's not that dangerous, we're doing most of the initial experiments in the heart of Montreal on a university campus, it's perfectly safe.
And here, we have a plan already made up to destroy the agricultural heartland of EUROPE and are testing out the means to disperse bacteria, molds and diseases from bombs.

So, the kid's sister called them in? Indicated from "further requests from the sister"? Or is that meaning "sister company"?

Yeah, he's still a living creature, he can even be hurt when he's water in various ways. If he didn't get tired or need food, he'd be too strong to be interesting.

It gets better for the kid.

At one time, she'd sent in requests for someone to scare her younger brother, the freak, to death. Bed Monsters, Inc. finally decided enough was enough from her.

The new request was essentially a 'hail mary' pass after the lead doctor on his case rashly promised he'd not be left alone. Not so easy to arrange for a secure ward in a private facility.

Every bit as bad as you can imagine and still leave a "survivor". Hence, one of the reasons large chunks of Metro's back-story likely won't be written.

Well, look on the bright side: the never killed a whole bunch of Italian civilians with an accidental release of mustard gas ... or left a Scottish island permanently uninhabitable ... or accidentally infect 100+ people with anthrax the way the USSR did twice during the Cold War... or dose a hundred random people with LSD the way the US did (also in the Cold War - I probably don't need to link to that, seriously, how could anyone not have heard of MKUltra by now?)... or so badly mishandle the high-level waste from a plutonium plant that it left huge swathes of contaminated land and water in the area of the plant (which everybody who make or made their own nuclear weapons did, just about, though no one else to quite the degree the Soviets did at Chelyabinsk )... or spray a mixture of several supposedly non-pathogenic bacteria over a major city (yeah, turns out that S. marcescens can cause infections after all! who knew?)... or... you get the idea.

Of course, we may not know all of the different fuck-ups and dirty tricks that actually happened, so maybe Ottawa is just better at cover-ups than the rest are.

The SS John Harvey is actually why Canada started experimenting with liquid mustard gas and pouring it on various body parts of soldiers, the British wanted to know what would happen so Canada's mad scientists obliged.

And Canada was the one goading Britain into expanding it's biological tests which led to the British dropping anthrax in such large amount. At the start of the war Canada despite only starting a year or two earlier was doing experiments with all kinds of nasty products that the British scientists were too afraid to try. In the book "Camp X" (yes that was the name of the camp) which explored all of this from Canada's perspective, a number of Canadian scientists jokingly asked why the British still had their biological and chemical warfare information classified, it wasn't like they did anything.

The thing to remember here is that Canada did all of this in a span of 6 years, and nearly came to disaster through a lack of security and proper test protocols a number of times. And the fact that people don't think of Canada as having mad scientists or a well honed knowledge of how to kill people.
Canada is weird that way. War starts, Canada goes kind of berserk and tries to slaughter the enemy to the point of being considered insane by the enemies, typically Germans. War ends, and Canada returns to being the shy and soft spoken country everyone kind of forgets about.
