  • Schol--R-LEA, I could see that happening if Dina was younger and a student at Whateley. That would be a fun fanfic, de-aging the cast of Dumbing of Age back to high school instead of college and put them in Whateley Academy. Just imagining what each of their powers would be is a fun thought experiment. Spot on with Dina's powers, she just has a way of blending in until she speaks up.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • Yeah, as I said it was Dina's own comment on that which got me thinking of it. But you can bet that Poe would be filled to the brim with David Willis characters that year, what with Becky (who probably would have had to run for her life when she manifested anyway, so little things like sexual orientation are hardly going to matter), Carly (maybe with the power to turn into UltraCar, going full circle as it were), Ethan, Marcie, Faz (who would be ever so quick to point out that he's technically bisexual - with charts, just like in Shortpacked!), Conquest (OK, so Connie hasn't been in DoA much so far as I've seen, just waiting tables at the pizza parlor the one time, but it would make sense for her to be there too), Ruth, and maybe Billie depending on what she copped to in the application form.

And poor Amber - being Amazi-Girl won't get her much at Whateley, beyond some pokes for the corny codename. Oh, and make sure that Billie and Ruth don't meet any Dylans or they'll never be sober - I doubt either of them would go for any exotic Devisor drugs from Le Carnival, but any chance for alcohol is likely to be too much for them to pass up.

Now I'm trying to figure out which courses Jason, Penny, Daisy, and Galasso would be teaching. Or maybe Galasso would make more sense as the manager of the power plant, I'm not sure - he's always wanted power, after all :) I'm guessing that Reagan in this case would be a robot Galasso built, rather than the real RR resurrected, or worse, zombified (though we could probably skip that entirely, given that it was originally a throw away gag about 80s nostalgia that took on a life of its own).

Oh, and we should totes hook Daisy up with Songbird.

I'm not really up to writing it, sadly. Maybe we can convince Willis to read enough WA that he'd be willing to write it himself?

As for Joe's comment about Harvey, we all know the only thing up Bunny's alley is Nikki's... shutting up now.

Can I use Doc. Sagittarius if I need Dynamorphs? ... Is he even alive after his experiments?

Whoops. ... I meant, for his Championship Part II AU of Whateley, if the events relayed by his Micro Scene were the... events that happened to his version of Sunburst. ... I am not even thinking that such events are what happened in the Canon Cabal Official Whateley-verse.

And yes. I remember the long discussions on the meaning of the word 'canon'. ... Although I'd be hard-pressed for their precise location...

So, what word should I use for fanfic authors' timelines? I guess something like "Schol-R-LEA-verse canon"?

I'm thinking 'Fanon', but that's also used for what the fans think are canon, or as TvTropes Laconic says: "Fan Wank that's accepted by a fandom as Canon."

  • I was guessing Ayla, he would be the only one I could think of would be welcome (or at least push into without being rendered down to atoms) a conversation between Jadis and Natch over Natch's private life.

Going forward, I get the feeling Sunburst would be one of the few Superhero's willing to mentor a Superhero version of Jadis. I wonder what a superhero team consisting of Sunburst, Natch and Jadis would be like?

  • The ultimate good cop/bad cop routine?

Speaking of which, does letting Nacht stare at prisoners count as coercing a confession?

  • Depends what the local laws for admission of evidence gathered by superpowers are.

It would be hard to argue Natch isn't doing something to them when you have a video of her just staring and smiling and super-hardened criminals start peeing their pants, literally, and spilling their guts.

Defence attorneys are going to at least try to get it dismissed as evidence.

Relative to that particular fanfic, sure. It isn't actual canon, of course, perhaps we could call such things 'deuterocanon' I suppose.

As for Dr. Sagittarius, if you can figure out a justification for them still being alive after more than half a century, feel free to use them.

Interesting! I wonder which birthday this is... Do we even know when Nacht's birthday is?

New Paragraph starting when a new person speaks and ending when you finish describing their way of speaking?

Forget us - I'd be surprised if Nacht knew when her birthday was. It doesn't seem like the type of detail that "Mother Dearest" would have concerned herself with.

  • Well, Marzena claimed to be her mother -- so she probably had some sort of papers, like a fake birth certificate. The real question is if the date on that fake birth certificate matches Kate's real birth date.

Or, for that matter, considering the various scams Marzena was involved with, which probably involved change of identities, whether there is a birth certificate that Kate has ever considered here "real one."

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Perhaps they used the date she was "dipped" in the Erebeal liquid.

Oh, while Sunny really thinks it would be good for Kate to loosen up, I very much doubt that she would force Kate into a motel bed with Thorn. She would leave the choice to be celibate to Kate, although she would tease her mercilessly about it.

  • Valentine, thank you for that micro-scene, even if it will never happen. It would be very nice if that happens somehow to the MCO.

And Phoenix, why would you subject Gunny to that level of insanity, let alone Louis through secondary exposure. Even for Gunny that is just too cruel. Shoot, I think seeing that would make even Gothmog question his sanity.

  • I don't have cable and I haven't watched an adult tv show in at least 3 years.
The character Probably was created for another story (where she had much better control over her powers and much more outgoing) about 2 years ago as a side character.
I did watch the second Sherlock Holmes movie, but it was in Chinese at the time. And I don't think it had any real influence on her.

And yeah I noticed the similarity about a year after writing her up. But they're pretty different overall. You can ask her about scenario's all you want, she won't be able to answer anything that isn't directly affecting her or in her immediately vicinity. She also has a LOT less control in what percentages she sees, and more control in changing the outcomes.

... Unless you don't want to say, of course. Just asking 'cause you gave for Probably...

Huh. There's nothing indicating Probably's a girl. I think? The "[Make] probability my bitch" seemed more male to me, with the use of "bitch"?

EDIT: I'm wrong. "small girl in broad daylight" ...

  • Probably is a girl. She may or may not be appearing in a future story.

Miss Powerful is just a fun little character I came up with. I was thinking of making a series of short little events concerning her adventures. And running around with a car over her head to test out her strength seemed par for the course.

I think it's definitely an interesting start, though you might consider actually starting a thread for it in the Fabrication Lab if you want to go further with it. That's probably better than just writing pieces of it in the Micro-Scenes thread.

I think Sam should be more surprised that Jade had plans for this, or at least re-think her opinion of Jade, and be something like sad that the Wondercute Break Scenario could have been avoided if they had known about Jade's plans or something?

"Something like sad" 'cause sadness is not the emotion I'm talking about. I just think that the emotion I have no name for is something like Sadness, but it might not be.

It's the feeling brought on by ThisAllCouldHaveBeenAvoided.

OH! "Apparently things were well in hand here." ... That's not from Sam's POV? Is it narrator sarcasm-thing? 'Cause that's just awesome!

  • Jade is far from the least stable of Team Wondercute, she may actually be the most stable. Well maybe second to Molly. You do need to know where her point of stability is though, because it is outside the norm.

  • Okay so I knew the second Microscene wasn't done well but class was about to start and I didn't have time to rethink/edit it and wasn't sure I'd still have the idea after class. It was a little rushed.

None of this is an excuse just an explanation. I accept the consequences of my shoddy workmanship.

@Malady: I didn't represent the time scale very well, after finding Jade the entire sequence takes less than 15 seconds. Sam was supposed to be speechless.

@Valentine: Jade may be stable but she doesn't appear to be to those around her or the Whateley staff. Also she is functionally the least like a normal teenager in the group. She is a tactical genius who acts like a ten year old girl.

    *nods*

When I get ideas, if I'm out, I load up my email program (Outlook) and send an email to myself. Else I make a text file and put the idea in there for later. But, if your email costs money, then you can't do that...

Get a calendar program and make an alert in the near-future with your idea in there, so you get notified?

    Anyone got any other tips?

EDIT: It's not like you can't clean it up.

I agree fully that she doesn't appear stable, but once you understand her worldview, it becomes apparent. She acts like a 10 year old girl, except when she is acting as cold blooded nut, and she switches back and forth easily.

Precisely my point, and why Sam comments on her instability. Sam isn't completely in the know about how Jade works. None of the staff are, so from her perspective Jade is the least stable group member.

  • @Mhalpern - Hey! A new Egg Girl post, and just as I was gonna post this Egg Girl Song!

Hmm... A Dev-Bra. Interesting! ... Can't use it though, unfortunately.

    Armored, Anti-Groping Dev-Bra? ... Why not a Gadg-Bra?

    What about the B-Cup notification?

  • I kinda hate it when people blame extreme emotional responses on estrogen. Testosterone doesn't make you any more rational you know.

This probably has less impact coming from someone who has a mental disorder that hinders emotional responses to an extent.

I think it's definitely an interesting start, though you might consider actually starting a thread for it in the Fabrication Lab if you want to go further with it. That's probably better than just writing pieces of it in the Micro-Scenes thread.

I dont have permission to start a fabrication lab thread... otherwise I would

What if Serious!Jade was a Recurring Nightmare for Gunny? ... Or basically any Micro-Scene for any certain character. But, right now, I'm thinking of Serious!Jade...

  • It could very well be his nightmare, but I don't want it to be. I want Serious!Jade as you call her to be a very real threat to people.

Then again if I had my way I'd be writing Jade in my off time, and I'm way to inexperienced (+not babs) to do that.

Also who says Serious!Jade isn't real? Jade scares the pants off of the other ultraviolents for a reason.

Her rooming with Tennyo is enough reason for the other ultraviolents to be afraid, if all you knew was their reputations, you would think of Jade as a devisor with access to unlimited antimatter, that is deadly WITHOUT it.

Nope as I said the Dev-Bra gave Ben the impression its creator was a pervert (most likely female pervert but never the less), not necessarily armored (slightly flame resistant and tougher than standard), the devise properties make it a one size deal, the notification was the current cup size, for practical reasons, after all one cant be expected to have a wardrobe of Devisor clothes, made with changing bodies in mind.

Edit, mostly it was a tool to torture err I mean track Ben's changes, without having to deal with department store issues pertaining to appearances. May do more with it in future iterations and after "hatching", but it was also a "you have divisors who make anything you can think of, so you know THIS exists" partially inspired by Glow's costume,

That happened during the time skip, haven't ironed out the the dates, not sure about the year either, no reason to go day to day at that point, also wanted to make the growth feel faster than it truly was, for perspective reasons, in at that point in time Ben will have just gotten used to the idea he had them in the first place, now being forced to come to the realization that they aren't exactly small either. Also not a whole lot happens between the first time putting the Dev-Bra on and C-cup, in truth I was debating between B and C for that scene but I felt that going straight to C captured the illusion of things going quickly better

  • Also Ben/Betty/Dragon Egg (note this is considered a temporary codename for MID purposes, when that scene is expanded on this will be mentioned), is a very reserved person and very much an introvert, though it may not have been my intention originally, the egg shell itself may evolve into a form of literary tool, whether it grows more as she comes out of her proverbial "shell", I don't know, but probably.
Originally it was cause dragons are cool and I liked the idea of a rather slow and intricate transformation path that gives the mutant a chance to process things a little bit at a time rather than it all being thrown in their face, which happens to be one of the things I look forward to with Danny Franks, though sibling antics also are a sizable factor

Right now though, I need a bigger character pool, and I haven't even decided on the timeline yet, and I don't really have a huge intention of creating a hole cast for what was just an idea in my head that itself has gone through multiple iterations in what I would like to see in a transformation story in general, in small snippets since my love of the book series The Inheritance Cycle began to meld with my love of transformation stories in general. The character pool is especially important for the next chapter on where employing the "shell device" would start. And Betty doesn't even have a last name yet, or a middle name and I may need 2 of those! And if I decide the last name starts with a D than Aaron/Erin may be out of the question as are all A and E middle names! Heck the only reason I chose the name "Ben" was that it rhymes with "Egg", and "Beatrice" or rather the shortened "Betty" doesn't sound too different from "Ben" and I want to keep away from using Cannon students too much because I know I will misinterpret them and their developments will make my best prediction on them glaringly off, I may have good guesses, but I have no way of knowing how any cannon student will respond to different situations, and the more I do so and the more different they become, the more forced they will be. I feel like before I go much further I need a Fanfic character pool that's more than just me, I mean Tekhe from the Bad Ideas might come in as a side character, but this is the most I've developed any character, and its more than I intended to.

And that's basically where I'm at, I can't decide on the year, the names and am in need of a "fan-fiction cabal" and a bunch of other details that WILL stick out like a sore thumb for being missing, aren't there...

As I was rant typing, the names Benjamin Nathan Davidson and Beatrice Natalie Davidson came to mind so thank you... And yes, the fact that BND would be pronounced "bend" if it were a team in RWBY might have helped that along...

  • Well, what characters do you need, in as specific as you want 'cause I can come up with stuff if you want.

Any characters I make, you can take.

You could set the story in some alternate 2006, or perhaps a bit earlier, like 2000, where there isn't a big looming threat, and so you don't have to deal with The Bastard and stuff...

Or, have some alt-continuity where The Bastard is wiped out due to the appearance of some info source that isn't in Canon, like Phoenix Spiritus's Solomon, or some Oracle Devise, or, to use one of my ideas, an Oracle of Delphi Avatar.

You could delay The Bastard by having something happen to the Sierre Madre Mountains, like a Nano-plague or a Zombie Infestation, or something.

Or to use another of my ideas... Something with that Well of Mimir Cult, which, given the Well of Mimir, could give people prophetic powers by drinking it, or if you want to go Odin, by dropping their... right, or left, eye into the Well, for power...

  • general students mainly, powers aren't exactly important, as combat is not what drives the main conflict for the story, at least not right now, the steady transformation does, its not a story about super fights, yes they will exist, but that's not what its about, I need friends and reasonable enemies, it will probably be in 2007, or 2016, so that I have more source material to piggy back on, I just have a personal rule on no shipping with Canon characters and letting them keep to the background not going too far ahead on them as I could invoke serious discrepancies.

and staying away from the mega arks.

  • The only time I smoke is when I'm on fire. I have, however, been known to eat an excess of jelly beans, generally sourced from this Kroger . Normally I purchase groceries from Food City because out of my local options their store is the most convenient to access and the most pleasant to be within, even if their self-checkout machines are slightly substandard. Unfortunately, my Food City only carries Jelly Belly. My local Kroger, on the other hand, carries Private Selection jelly beans, which I prefer. They also have 32oz containers of maple syrup, which are rather more convenient than the 24oz containers found at Food City.

Truly, I am the height of sophistication.

  • I'm behind with commenting on the micro-scenes.

Jarjaross: Loved the Jade scenes, felt like something which could happen in canon. With Jade it is hard to predict how she will react and what she has planned.

Domoviye: Love Miss Powerful and can't wait to read more about her and her antics. Any more about Rose and how she deals with her mother living in denial would be nice. And that Tink scene with everyone contributing to taking down Mimeo was perfect. Gave me a much needed laugh.

And Kettlekorn, just what in the world did you eat before bed to come up with that Dragonball Z/Whateley Academy dream/nightmare of Ayla's?

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

Thank you. I've got a few more ideas for Miss Powerful and Rose that I'll put out every Monday until my muse shuts up. I think people will like them.

With Mimeo, I've wanted Tink to fight him for a while, but anything that lasted a while just seemed like Mary Sue for Tink, so not going to happen. Then reading the Mimeo thread, it hit me, make her the delivery system for someone else's plan. They couldn't use a robot, he'd just crush it, someone bigger couldn't get close enough, and Mimeo could get away from anyone who isn't a speedster before they grabbed him. And without being carefully positioned, they wouldn't be able to direct the virus to his mouth and nose without being obvious, at which point he breaks the nozzle to the reservoir of virus, or starts beating them to a pulp, gaining a new power. Tink had the right powers, and was odd enough to make him pause on beating her up long enough that there was nothing he could do.
    It was perfect.

  • Domo, you have been a busy little bee. Loved how Tink reacted to getting the autographed pic from Mimeo and then the future scene with her against Mimeo as she is drinking a large container of devisor coffee, I pity Mimeo. Another new character with Marni, what a way to find out you are a mutant. And love how Rose retaliated against the jerk who destroyed her blueprint, pink glittery paint, hehehe.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

Mimeo would probably win against Tink. The plan actually counts on it.
They figure Mimeo will go hyper like Tink does, they'll fight and while Tink goes to sleep at the end, they're hoping Mimeo will also be really tired. With his powers it won't be as bad as Tink's collapse, but even having him significantly tired for 10 or 15 minutes, might be enough to let the power armour catch him.

With Rose, I liked her retaliation to. She's not a shrinking violet even if she's not one to crow about her revenge.

^_^ Currently, at least. Wasn't there an earlier story where they were theorizing that it was a branch of Alchemy, and therefore Magic? The Power Geeks probably change classifications every few years for the new Grand Unified Theory that solves all of the problems until someone brings up an exception.

I think you're thinking something else, the most common branch trait of esper is danger sense, what you might be thinking of is Devising, not esper, esper is dangersense, seeing the past or future, knowing the history of an object by touching it, or understanding something on proximity, if someone was a low level esper and their eyes didn't change color or anything, in many cases, they may not ever know, as esper abilities are inherently subtle

  • Hey Malady you do know that the bell and rosary are Christian symbols right? The rosary being almost exclusively Catholic.

One of my favourite stories in Christian mythology (yes there is a mythology) is about a catholic missionary who used a giant iron bell as a 1-handed mace to bash in the heads of infidels. While saying the Lord's Prayer. In priests robes and armour. In the middle of the Amazon rain forest.

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

It's pretty much from Chou's origin story..."a bell, a bead necklace thing and a Chinese straight sword". except for referring to them as a rosary.

Yes and bells are used in religious symbolism around the world. Rosaries are not, there are rosary like neclaces used in some other cultures but they are not rosaries. A rosary has a crucifix hanging down from the 'centre' after 4 beads and then a circle of 40 or so (I don't remember the exact number) beads each of which is equally spaced but of different sizes or engravings.

  • A "Rosary" is used to count off the prayers in a Rosary, which is an Orthodox (Catholic?) tradition of saying prayers like the Hail Mary, Our Father, Hail Holy Queen and others in specific patterns (usually five "decads", which is five time ten Hail Mary's with the associated other prayers between them).

Since the Hail Mary gives Protestants conniptions, and the Hail Holy Queen right out makes them swear, its not something your likely to see done outside Orthodox Christian groups.

(FYI, "Catholics" are just one of the "Orthodox Christians", but since they are like 1/6th of the population of the planet, they tend to be counted as a seperate group).

  • ... Okay, these calls a Buddhist prayer bead set a rosary.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_prayer_beads

They are similar to other forms of prayer beads used in various world religions and therefore the term "Buddhist rosary" also appears.

    tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OneHundredAndEight

It is the number of beads on a Buddhist o-juzu or rosary.

  • And they are wrong.

The generic term is "Prayer Beads", a set of "Rosaries" are prayer beads in the exact configuration to say the "Rosary" prayer. If they are not meant to be used to say the Rosary, they are not "Rosary Beads".

A rosary has, on the 'tail' hanging in the center, the crucifix, a large bead, 3 small beads, and then usually a second large bead, all below a 'medallion' joining the tail to the loop. Then there are 5 sets of 10 small beads around the loop, each set of 10 separated from the next set by a large bead.

There is a very specific prayer sequence for the beads, and then a final prayer at the medallion at the end. With each chanting of the rosary, one meditates upon one of 4 (3 to some ultra-orthodox Catholics) sets of 'mysteries' - each set has 5 mysteries in it, one for each decade - a set of one large and 10 small beads.

Of note is that the rosary beads are also useful for counting the prayers of the Divine Mercy chaplet.

  • All too busy praying it in order to try and remember the proper order of the prayers.

And no, I couldn't describe a Rosary if my life depended on it, my family never had one. There was five in my family (two adults, three children) and we just took turns being the cantor (the Rosary is mostly in multiples of five, so it worked well for us).

(And no, that's not meant to be confusing. "A Rosary" is the set of prayer beads. "The Rosary" is the prayer you say.)

Don't say that to anyone who is Catholic, or orthodox for that matter, they will get pissed at you. Orthodox Christians are a different sect that broke away from the Catholic Church before there was even a notion of Protestant Christianity.

  • Orthodox and Catholics disagree about the Pope, and that's mostly it. Both groups admit that the core "Christian" teachings are the same, because they date back to the Council of Nicaea in the third century, 12 hundred or so years before the "Schism" over the Pope.

How "fanatical" individuals are about it is kind of a matter more of politics rather then religion. In places where one side or the other were persecuted, they get a bit hung up about it. Most places in the world its not that big a deal.

And, at this point, most branches of Catholicism are "in communion" with each other such that they largely have reciprocity among their rituals with some quirks for groups that have more or less restrictive guidelines (for example, the Roman Catholic Church accepts Greek Orthodox weddings, but the Greek Orthodox Church does not feel that the Roman rite is stringent enough). You can't take Holy Communion in another branch, but that's largely because the customs are different enough to risk offense.

Now if you really want trouble, point out to a Baptist that that they're technically a lapsed Catholic... although there too, you get some funny distinctions like how I recently had to convince my wife that "Christian" didn't just refer to the various Protestant branches. And that's nothing compared to when you run into a Baptist who claims that their religion is older because it started with John the Baptist, who was born before Christ. Oy vey...

Main thing that struck me about the story was the the choice of one item to take and one to reject reminded me of Kingdom Hearts. And I have seen "rosary" used as a general term in a number of places, the same way that "bible" has become a general term for "holy book" even in secular contexts. They've become generic trademarks.

Yeah, I'm quite sure that Nocte based it off Kingdom Hearts, as the original ended with:

Alex woke up, wondering what that dream was about. He concluded that he needed to stop playing videogames before going to sleep. He got dressed, had a quick breakfast. He had a gun show to go to. Hopefully, he would find another sword to add to his collection.

EDIT: And now I added that into the Author's Notes.

... Well, no one's complaining... So I might expand on the scene? Nah. Don't got the time. Anyone can co-opt it, perhaps give it to another Tao Servant, but give them the Beads or the Bell... Which'd change the opening scene, as they can only choose one, and have to reject the other, and being the last person means that they're forced into wielding something... ... Unless there's more swords...

  • If I ever figure that out myself, I might. While this particular summit meeting was related to 'Islands in the Sun' - in a nutshell, both Hikaru and Amatarasu herself wanted advice from their peers about the plan to extend Japan's wards, the former wanting reassurance and the latter seeking intelligence about the situation (even a goddess of her stature can't know everything that's going on) before making a decision - the broader picture of how these secret Internet meetings got started, what the group's long-term goals are, etc. is something I haven't worked out. The fact that there are now several Avatars hosting or serving as Paladins for gods and goddesses around, three of whom are going to be Whateley students that year - Hikaru (Amatarasu), Chandi (Saraswati), and Nasir (Thoth - man, and you thought Kayda had trouble from her hometown; after going into hiding, Nasir is once again in nice middle-class home in a city named Cairo - but now when he looks out his window, instead of seeing the Mother of Egypt drifting lazily down her banks, he's looking across Old Man River towards Missouri, and he's finding that even 'the most depressing city in the US' is a step up from what he had been dealing with) - is significant, but I'm not sure just how yet.

  • Two things did occur to me that someone might ask about regarding that fanfic.

For the first one, when asked which name she prefers mortals to use for her, Inanna stated that all of the names people know her by are ones given to her by them, so she doesn't mind if she is known as an Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte or any of the others.

As for the second question, yes, there are definitely aspects of being the mortal representative of a fertility goddess that are problematic for Headmistress Carson; however, she was aware of them when she accepted the role as Paladin, and in fact it was in part to keep someone else from having to deal with them that she accepted the role in the first place.

Fortunately, Langley isn't the jealous type, and in fact finds it a nice change from before.

  • That it does. She did take a leave of absence for a few months not long after making the bond, and a shorter one the following spring, but she had the presence of mind to make an agreement with the deity right from the start the she would not deliberately put Liz into a position that could be harmful to her students, and made it clear that this included any contact of a sexual nature. Despite this, and despite some conflict between Astarte and the Astarte Force (it gets a bit crowded in there - while Forces are not sentient per se, they do have tendencies and instincts after a fashion), the bond mostly a harmonious one.

However, I am not quite so evil as to connect this storyline to the one regarding Lady Astarte. I'll leave that to Domoviye.

  • It seems a good skill for a talented mutant psychic to learn. Instead of stealthing or barging his way into a crime, he casually strolls in, sees whats going on, and mind whammies the criminals at just the right moment.

Yes, though she isn't actually one of mine - she was one of the characters in another fanfic by (I think) Elrod. I 'borrowed' her for the earlier micro-scene, figuring it would be a one-off, but while I was fixing some typos on this one I had a brainwave and re-wrote it to have her be the student they were discussing.

  • Different character, who was suicidal for different reasons. The original Brittany Sholes character was the one who sicced H1! on Lucid. Unfortunately, that story arc seems to have vanished with the server move, though it might mean that Lucid is going to go canon and they didn't want to have the original on the site yet.

Oh, it does, but it seems the older ones are better kept. Just change the parameters in the URL here:

    web.archive.org/cdx?url=crystalhall.org%...ilter=statuscode:200

Now... You're looking for Lucid, who's Praenunito's Character. They're a really big writer. It's all in one page. 1,172 KB, MHT. ... Enormous...

But then again, there are other H1! Mutants? Or not? ... Anyway. Get one of my archives, if you haven't already, and look for "Lucid". There should be only one entry...

There are some mutants from H1 families, Diamondback for one. But none of them have supported the group to any great extent. H1 is mostly in the background as a general threat and an annoyance, so no main characters have really dealt closely with the organization itself beyond avoiding it, except for Silver Ghost.
That could change in the future though.

  • Ribbon was a member of H1, and a mutant, although never at the same time. Circuit Breaker's brother was at the H1 murder camp when he manifested and was murdered. I don't think we know what his thoughts on the matter were, though.

There was an H1 friendly mutant (at least he worked for the MCO and an evil scientist against other mutants) called Cleaner (Ron Pruitt) in LightofFury's story called Negation.(ElrodW originally posted it which may have led someone to believe it was one of his)

    and

There was Wasamon's Scarlyt from his story A Study in Scarlyt who was a Rabidly H1 leaning teen who became a mutant in the course of the story. Truly a VERY dark story...

I can extract it for folks, but I don't know if it would be appropriate for anyone who isn't the author or an admin to repost it.

EDIT: I've put a BBcoded version of the story on my GDrive, if anyone wants a copy PM me and I'll give you the link and access to it.

  • Well, first to get out the way the two obvious ones: the "burn IDs" aliases Mephisto mentions are the Golden Age Hawkman and Indiana Jones.

Of the mess of names below... let me see... Dr. Amazing and Professor Quartermane are both canon, of course. Frank Hardy Jr. might be the son of one of the Hardy Boys. Dr. Germahn might be the fourth-wall-explaining-guy from El Goonish Shive. Dr. Osterman is probably Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen.

There's a whole Wilde family tree there which I assume is a reference to something or a bunch of somethings, but I have no idea what.

And besides the point, seeing Professor Quartermane's name again made me think... at the time Razzle Dazzle was published, I think Bek admitted that he was a homage to Professor Challenger. The wiki mentions also the name as being an Allan Quartermain nod, but I wonder if it is also intended to be an homage to Professor Bernard Quatermass...

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Not bad, but you missed what I expected to be second most obvious of them (after Dr. Jones, of course): Bruce Signe, the exemplar/gadgeteer rager. At least neither he nor his relative named Jennifer turn green when angry...

Whereas Terrence, Richard and Rose shouldn't really be related to them, since they all come from that other comic book company... and yeah, the trenchcoat comment is a clue. The Wilde family as a whole are canon, being part of the Doc Savage pastiche in 'Razzle Dazzle'.

That depends upon whether Jade is there for new Poe freshman, or comes in at a later date. After that, about 15 minutes, most of which Jade is gushing over the new cute little girl that looks younger than she does.

  • Well, perhaps having everything go your way inadventently harms the people around you? Where does 'you' stop, and 'others' begin? ... Possible psychological: Do people like you due to your powers making it so, or ecause they actually do? And does it matter?

... Also, a villain with the power can still be beaten if choices/chances are restricted so the best that can happen for them, is still within the events that you want...

Yeah, this is a definite issue with luck manglers. It does necessarily even have to cause bad luck for others, but as with Teela Brown , it could simply end up that what is lucky for them isn't necessarily good for anyone else.

But I was thinking more about the fact that Lizzy and Clover are already going to be in the same classes (they'll both be 8th graders that year), which is a risky thing given the way probability warping can run wild when there are two or more manglers in close proximity. Having them on the same team as well would be a recipe for disaster.

  • No, you're right, it never comes out and says so; at that point she had no idea what powers she might have beyond her sex-related changes and some general Exemplar indicators. However, the story does imply that she is more than just normally lucky.

IIRC, what I said in the previous thread as EX-2, WA-3p, ESP-3par. She was described by one reader as 'that girl who all the other girls hate because everything always goes right for her'.

    OH! ... I missed that...

    @Domoviye:

So, I guess she has to finish her fights real quick, else she can't fight anymore due to exhaustion? Or is it a continuous range of power ups so she doesn't have to go "FULL POWER!" every time, and conserve energy that way?

She can only go up to full power as of yet. She can do many short bursts of a few seconds at a time, followed by normal energy expenditure, to go longer.
So running from the MCO, she would run normally along the street, turn a corner, power up and jump to a third story balcony, power down and climb onto the roof, jog to the edge, power up again jump across the road, jog, power up, jump, jog, etc, and keep doing it for about thirty minutes, wanting only a good meal and a chance to sit down for a bit.
If she powered up and ran for ten minutes , she'd be halfway across the city before it ended, but she'll be going to bed and not waking up for a while, after eating a huge meal.
    It's a very tactical power.

Miss Powerful is just a fun little character I came up with. I was thinking of making a series of short little events concerning her adventures. And running around with a car over her head to test out her strength seemed par for the course.

Going through old posts to patch my archives, and I came across Probably again...

I was wrong in thinking there weren't any indications of her girlness... "small girl in broad daylight" ...

So, how far along an event chain can she predict, and how far in the future?

For example, two steps would be:

95% chance he'd punch me. 30% chance for me to escape unhurt. If he punched me, 63% chance someone would help me.

A third step might be the chance that the hypothetical rescuer actually manages to be useful.

  • I didn't want to get too bogged down with details, so I just showed the most obvious ones.
As for how far she can predict, consider anything beyond the next minute or so as educated guesses with a bit of luck on her side.
If she somehow foiled a plot by an evil supervillain known for murderizing people successfully, and he knew lots about her, her power would say 90% chance he'd kill her very soon. Good educated guess.

  • Yes, they do have problems concealing their powers.
Marni is more out of self defense since she was outed almost immediately.
Miss Powerful is having too much fun playing hero to be really careful.
Rose has to use her powers or it drives her nuts, and unfortunately the school shop class is her only place to really do her projects.
    And Samantha, well, just wait.

  • Think about it for a bit - including about me - and it should be obvious from the clues given. Hint: I was going to call the story "Easy as Golden Apple Pie".

And before anyone asks, no, She didn't escape before the 'Lympies did; the Foreigner never caught Her in the first place, as she's actually an Anthropomorphic Archetype rather than a Goddess (Olympian or chthonic) per se. She managed to hide out in the north of Europe and disguised Herself as... well, you can probably guess that one.

Malady wrote: Wait, even Majestic? A.k.a Hera?!

Yep, She's tricksy that way; She managed to catch June when she was particularly pissed with Jason, then connived to make Majestic think that the best way to get even was to make Imperious jealous, and gee, June, here's this younger boy there right in front of you and he's just the sort of skinny geek Jason despises... However, She also managed to maneuver things so that Zeus never found out that it was the Cheese who had stolen his mouse.

  • We have a winner!

Though you missed the part about '= Dr. Timothy Leary'.

I was humming along with my iPod, which had cued up an old Moody Blues song about a former self of mine. Alas, poor Timmy, he was a great host: so placid, so intelligent, so inspiring, such a tremendous pain in the arse for the Powers That Be.

The song in question was, of course, "The Legend of a Mind", AKA "Timothy Leary's Dead". The timing is a problem - in the real world, Leary died in 1996, which would make von Maas ten at the oldest - but who knows how things went in that world... also, I was assuming that Eris/Loki was jumping from human host to human host before mutants appeared (same as I had for the character of Euterpe), so it may not have been a permanent bond.

I wrote several of these to get an idea of a few new characters and other reasons. Then I thought some of them were really funny, so I posted them. No real big plan at first. Then I got a good idea and ran with it. I can write these out really easy in a few minutes between work, and writing bigger stories as a bit of a breather.
And I'll put out one to three a week, since I'm not ready yet to show the big thing. Don't worry it's going to be really satisfying at the end.

I cannot/will not say how many people are in the Miami Crusaders. That's for far in the future.

I know there are some who can synthesize psychoactive drugs, either from their own bodies or by devisor chemistry, and at least one (Bliss, of the Brooklyn Sentinels) who can induce euphoria psychically, but do any of the Dylans (or anyone else) actually have powers that require them to be in a chemically or emotionally altered state of consciousness in order to work (like the OWoD Cult of Ecstasy mages)? Or conversely, powers that cause them to act intoxicated while they use them (al la The Creeper)?

Or is it just coincidence that 2/3 Rose's Gadgeteering Scenes have her with vehicles?

  • She actually doesn't specialize in one area. She usually sees how something is made and can fix it. If she has the blueprints she understands them and can make them and add tweaks it to. She can also remember them extremely well. She can't really make things on her own.
So she is not as strong as most gadgeteers, she needs to see it to make it, but she is versatile. And she can surprise people with a few little surprises.

And so far she's made a prank bomb, a bike engine, fixed a laser pointer and a light, and made an expandable shield.

How complete do the blueprints need to be? ... Could she take the scattershot notes of a manic Gadgeteer and copy their Gadget?

Or be a quick Devise Test? 'Cause it seems she can detect Devised components, as seen when Mind Over Matter gave her that Devise-Gadget Laser Pen?

As for blueprints, if it was missing key points, it wouldn't work. A bit of wiring missing, a page showing how gears fit together, she could figure it out. As she gets more practical experience the less of the blueprints she needs. But she'll always need them.

  • Hmm... The only codename we've got is for Miss Powerful.

Are all of them going to Whateley? Are they even all mutants?

If not, then Samantha's the odd one out, as she's an adult? And the gem makes me think she's a Gem User... Unless she gets Regressed and possibly gets the meta-gene or something...

  • Nope. There's more. Lots more. But showing the important ones would reveal too much information.

    Mwahahahaha

You shall see, you shall see.

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?
